Why didn’t CNN’s international arm air its own documentary on Bahrain’s Arab Spring repression?

In late March 2011, as the Arab Spring was spreading, CNN sent a four-person crew to Bahrain to produce a one-hour documentary on the use of internet technologies and social media by democracy activists in the region. Featuring on-air investigative correspondent Amber Lyon, the CNN team had a very eventful eight-day stay in that small, US-backed kingdom.

By the time the CNN crew arrived, many of the sources who had agreed to speak to them were either in hiding or had disappeared. Regime opponents whom they interviewed suffered recriminations, as did ordinary citizens who worked with them as fixers. Leading human rights activist Nabeel Rajab was charged with crimes shortly after speaking to the CNN team. A doctor who gave the crew a tour of his village and arranged meetings with government opponents, Saeed Ayyad, had his house burned to the ground shortly after. Their local fixer was fired ten days after working with them.

The CNN crew itself was violently detained by regime agents in front of Rajab’s house. As they described it after returning to the US, “20 heavily-armed men”, whose faces were “covered with black ski masks”, “jumped from military vehicles”, and then “pointed machine guns at” the journalists, forcing them to the ground. The regime’s security forces seized their cameras and deleted their photos and video footage, and then detained and interrogated them for the next six hours.

Lyon’s experience both shocked and emboldened her. The morning after her detention, newspapers in Bahrain prominently featured articles about the incident containing what she said were “outright fabrications” from the government. “It made clear just how willing the regime is to lie,” she told me in a phone interview last week.

But she also resolved to expose just how abusive and thuggish the regime had become in attempting to snuff out the burgeoning democracy movement, along with any negative coverage of the government.

“I realized there was a correlation between the amount of media attention activists receive and the regime’s ability to harm them, so I felt an obligation to show the world what our sources, who risked their lives to talk to us, were facing.”

CNN’s total cost for the documentary, ultimately titled “iRevolution: Online Warriors of the Arab Spring”, was in excess of $100,000, an unusually high amount for a one-hour program of this type. The portion Lyon and her team produced on Bahrain ended up as a 13-minute segment in the documentary. That segment, which as of now is available on YouTube, is a hard-hitting and unflinching piece of reporting that depicts the regime in a very negative light.

Bahrain uprising anniversary: Worst clashes in months

Published on Feb 14, 2013

http://www.euronews.com/ Two years after their Arab Spring uprising against Bahrain’s ruling family, protesters have been back on the streets in what they said was a day of civil disobedience.

Security forces fired warning shots to try to disperse a crowd of youths gathered in a village near the capital Manama.

They killed a teenager and several others were injured during the most violent clashes in months.

Thousands of people were arrested during the first uprising in early 2011. Dozens of political prisoners are still in jail.

Of those originally detained, seven prisoners have been interviewed by Amnesty International at Bahrain’s Jaw prison.

All of them say they’ve been jailed on false charges or under laws that repress basic rights. Many were allegedly tortured in the first weeks of their arrests.

Human rights groups also claim security forces used excessive force two years ago.

Bahrain Shouting in the dark البحرين تصرخ في الظلام

Bahrain: An island kingdom in the Arabian Gulf where the Shia Muslim majority are ruled by a family from the Sunni minority. Where people fighting for democratic rights broke the barriers of fear, only to find themselves alone and crushed.

This is their story and Al Jazeera is their witness – the only TV journalists who remained to follow their journey of hope to the carnage that followed.

This is the Arab revolution that was abandoned by the Arabs, forsaken by the West and forgotten by the world.

LAPD

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) Just as was predicted and described by InfoWars and Natural News, the LAPD has been caught red-handed committing premeditated arson and murder against homicide suspect Christopher Dorner.

The proof is in the police scanner audio which has now gone public. In this audio, LAPD officers are heard saying:

“We’re gonna go forward with the plan with the burner.”

“Like we talked about.”

“Burners deployed, and we have a fire.”

Repeated by dispatcher: “Burners deployed, and we have a fire.”

“(unintelligible)…mission success.”

“We have fire in the front. He might come out the back.”

“Looks like it’s starting to collapse.”

“We’re gonna start bringing fire in, about 200 yards out.”

“Break 61 Lincon, 61 Charlie, you ready for fire?”

You can hear all this starting at around the 1:00 mark in the following video:

“F#cking burn this motherf#cker!” — LAPD officers as heard on live television

Infowars reporter Paul Joseph Watson also reported the following evidence:

In a separate clip carried by a local news channel, police are heard to say, “F#cking burn this motherf#cker,” and “burn that f#cking house down.” This audio appears to be from earlier in the siege following the initial shootout between Dorner and cops.

As the Guardian reports, tweets made by journalist Max Blumenthal, who was listening live to police scanner feeds, correlate with the audio from the YouTube clips.

Shortly after smoke was seen rising from the cabin, police ordered online scanner feeds to be cut having earlier barred networks like CNN from carrying live footage of the scene and telling journalists not to put out tweets.

RFM/Smart Meter Issues…

Findlay912

Uploaded on Feb 8, 2013

Brenda Hawk did not want the electric company coming on to her property and replacing her analog electric meter with a “smart meter” on her house. One of the reasons being that it is a RFM (radio frequency meter), and would interfere with her pace maker. So, they turned off the power to her home at the electric pole, in the middle of the winter, with freezing temperatures, on a handicapped woman with a pace maker and breathing issues.

UPDATED: Handicapped Woman Refuses Smart Meter — Has Power Cut in the Dead of Winter

Feb. 9, 2013 2:31pm
The Blaze.com

UPDATE: Office of Ohio Governor Kasich intervenes. Details posted below.

A handicapped woman in western Ohio has to battle the freezing winter weather this weekend because she refused to allow the local power company to install a “smart meter” on her property.

Handicapped Ohio Woman Has Power Cut for Refusing Smart Meter for Health Reasons

Brenda Hawk has a pacemaker for her heart and because her brain was injured in a car accident, she requires a breathing machine in order to sleep at night. She does not want the new radio-frequency emitting meter because of the health problems these devices have been said to cause. But American Electric Power AEP-Ohio, the local power company, has persisted in their push to swap out Hawk’s analog meter and replace it with the new one.

TheBlaze spoke with Hawk on Saturday. At the time, she was using a kerosene heater to stay warm in the freezing weather. Hawk gave us a basic timeline on the story.

In October of last year, a utility worker arrived on her property and announced that he had removed her old analog power meter and replaced it with a new one. Hawk told him that she had not approved the meter swap and requested that the old one be restored. A series of phone calls between Hawk, the power company and the sheriff’s office was enough to get the new meter pulled out and the old one re-installed.

Fast forward to Jan. 24, 2013. A certified letter from AEP executive Ralph Rocca, Jr. arrived at Hawk’s home announcing that she would be getting a new meter or her power would be cut off. Her efforts to contact Rocca were not successful. All that Hawk wanted was a guarantee from the company that the new meter’s electrical signals would not interfere with her pacemaker. The company could not give her that assurance and it was her position that unless and until they did, no “smart meter” would be installed.

Hebrew Speaking “FBI” at Sandy Hook, December 14, 2012, says Tel Aviv Embassy Intel Official (former)

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

Veterans Today

In much of the West, Press TV has been shut down, censored, blocked or smeared and attacked.  This was only a first step.

Now there is irrefutable proof that plans are in motion to put police agencies in control of all information published on the internet, approval will be needed for, not just “facts,” whatever they are, but opinions as well.

We are talking news, blogs, social networks, “the whole thing.”

Former Top Tel Aviv Embassy Officer Says FBI Speaking Hebrew

YouTube – Veterans Today -

The assault on “gun rights” is a feint; “Sandy Hook” will go much further, with current moves aimed at dismembering the last vestiges of the America only a few believe still exists.

There has never been anything like “Sandy Hook.”

Sandy Hook is the first terror attack meant to be unraveled, exposed and debunked, not once but week after week, month after month, one bizarre revelation after another.

Were Sandy Hook a television show, it would now be in its third season, another “psyop” to go along with “Homeland” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”

The murders were not about punishment and suffering, not in a primary sense.  The sea of lies surrounding Sandy Hook is an outright assault on every institution, including, oddly enough, the press resources that had to have been readied and briefed, not just days but weeks in advance.

As many had postulated, Sandy Hook, the highly organized brutal murder of twenty small children by military trained special operations monsters is an act of pure political terror nearly identical to the “Breveik” slayings in Norway.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook terror attack, the United States is being subjected to a broad assault on its basic constitutional rights and freedoms.  This is a carefully planned and orchestrated attack, not just on gun ownership but now includes broad assaults on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and is aimed, quite specifically, not just to demonize gun ownership but to also demonize anyone who uses their mental acuity to question the mythology of the controlled “pop culture media.”

Very genuine threats are now being made to end all independent internet communications, labeling it a hotbed of “hate speech” and “conspiracy theory.”

The stories filling the internet and newspapers are not from real police but are highly misleading references to non-existent policies and governmental directives, all invented, as we have clearly proven, by AIPAC lobbyists and their intelligence assets seeded among, not just major media, but throughout the internet “lunatic fringe” rumor mills.

Sandy Hook was carefully planned, not just as a slaughter of children or terrorist attack.  Studies of the operation, and Sandy Hook was clearly a terrorist operation, are ongoing.

Thus far the attack called upon broad assets, applying many of the methodologies of game and chaos theory warfare.

‘Call for everything’: Police scanner recording reveals early moments of Newtown tragedy

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

But as the horrific event unfolded, first-responders can be heard asking for more support: “Call for everything,” one says. The communications were not officially released, but were posted on YouTube by a scanner monitor and authenticated by police.

Some of the dialogue is encrypted or garbled, but the transmissions that can be heard – with the sound of sirens blaring in the background — provide a glimpse of how Friday’s massacre unfolded through the eyes of police and paramedics.

The recordings begin at 9:35 a.m. with a dispatcher calmly reporting a 911 call about “somebody shooting in the building,” followed two minutes later by the chilling update that a caller was “continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire.”

One dispatcher notifies responding officers that a teacher reported seeing “two shooters, running past the gym.”

“Make sure you have your vests on,” a voice cautions officers in the early minutes.

There was, of course, just one gunman – Adam Lanza, 20, who used a rifle to kill 20 children and six staffers before committing suicide.

The radio transmissions suggest police and paramedics had no idea of the scope of the tragedy as they raced toward Sandy Hook.

“I will need two ambulances,” one dispatcher says five minutes after the initial report.

Three minutes later came the first hint of casualties, a person in Room 1 with a “wound to a foot.”

Another three minutes and dispatchers got their first sign the toll could grow with this update from someone on the scene: “We’ve got an injured person in room Number 9 with numerous gunshot wounds.”

At 9:49 a.m., an officer described what may have been Lanza shooting himself with one of his handguns as cops swarmed the building.

“Shots were fired about three minutes ago,” the officer said. “Quiet at the time.”

Four minutes later came word that Lanza was dead.

“One suspect down. The building has now been cleared,” a voice said. Then, a cataloguing of Lanza’s arsenal: “Multiple weapons, including one rifle and handguns.”

It had been a half hour since the killer blasted his way into the hilltop school that housed 600 students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

There had been no mention on open channels of how many people had died. But at 10 a.m., there was a frantic call, in police lingo, for ambulances.

“We need buses here. ASAP,” said someone at the scene.

“Send the ambulance right up to me … Get the bus! Get the bus!”

Moments later, came this suggestion: “You might want to see if the surrounding towns can send EMS personnel. We’re running out real quick.”

Another minute and it was clear that Newtown was dealing with a tragedy of unprecedented proportions.

“Call for everything,” said the voice on the radio.

This story will be updated as we learn more.

Huge explosion: The blast at the New York power plant Pic: YouTube

Nineteen workers were trapped inside a power station on the east side of Manhattan by rising floodwaters that accompanied the surge from Superstorm Sandy.

A rescue worker, who declined to be named, said the Consolidated Edison station had suffered an explosion inside leaving workers stranded.

The power station was shut down yesterday, cutting off power to a swathe of Lower Manhattan, to ‘protect electrical equipment’ and to allow for quicker restoration after the storm.

The company said it cut service to two areas covering Broadway, Wall Street, and the southern tip of Manhattan.

Around 6,500 customers had their electricity cut off.

The power station said that, as of 7 p.m. Eastern time yesterday there were more than 156,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County without power.

Sea water from Hurricane Sandy’s storm surge threatened to flood the underground electrical equipment, prompting the shutdown, Con Edison said.

The company will have to wait for flood waters to recede before workers can enter some facilities to assess damage, Con Edison said.

As equipment is inspected and determined safe to energize, the company said the highest priority for restoration will go to critical customer facilities that have an impact on the general public such as mass transit, hospitals, police and fire stations, and sewage and water-pumping stations.

Workers continue to monitor underground electrical delivery equipment in other areas of Manhattan south of 36th Street, along with section of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, for flooding and possible shutdowns.

A few hours before the power shutdown, the company notified customers through an automated calling system that their power might be shut off.

Con Edison spokesman Alfonso Quiroz said: “We wanted to let people know in and around these areas that there may be disruption to their service.”

Running amok: Film shows rat terrorising subway passengers as city official warns vermin scare tourists away

By Daily Mail Reporter

Vermin are running amok on New York City streets and in subway tunnels, a Manhattan city official warned today.

And as if to confirm the comments, a new video has emerged showing a rat running riot on a New York subway train.

The rat problem is so bad that it is threatening public health and driving tourists from the city, claimed Manhattan Borough president Scott Stringer.

Scroll down for video

Threat to health and tourism: Rats on a New York City street (file photo)Threat to health and tourism: Rats on a New York City street (file photo)

‘They don’t want to come here and share their vacation with a New York City rat,’ he said.

He demanded $1.5million in ‘rat control’ be restored to the city’s Health Department budget.

The cut, he said, had forced the layoff of 57 pest control workers. That resulted in a spike of 1.5 per cent in complaints over the last year and damage to New York’s appeal as a tourist destination.

And, he said, the rampaging rodents are also a threat to public safety.

‘I find this to be unacceptable because rodents are very dangerous to children and the quality of life of the city,’ Stringer said.

He said the cut ‘makes no sense’ as the city’s pest control programme was collecting around $6million in fines each year from building owners for pest-related health violations.

Horror: Subway rider awakes to find the rodent inches from his faceHorror: YouTube video which emerged in January shows a New York subway rider awakening to find a rat inches from his face

‘Why would you make cuts to a programme that actually makes money for the city?’ Stringer said.

Unless the cuts are restored and the pest control force fortified, the rat control problem is only going to get worse, he said.

City health spokeswoman Susan Craig said the layoffs have ‘had no impact on the agency’s ability to respond to rat complaints’.

The city has adapted to the cuts by doing more comprehensive pest control sweeps of neighborhoods as opposed to responding to individual complaints, she said.

‘Our new approach has allowed us to become better at discovering rat problems, better at notifying landlords about infestations and better at getting properties near each other to treat rat problems simultaneously,’ she said.
