Senate passes internet sales tax bill amid opposition from conservatives

The US Senate on Monday passed a bill aimed at ending tax-free shopping on the internet but the move looks set to face fierce opposition before it becomes law.

The Marketplace Fairness Act, which has cross-party supporter and the backing of powerful retailers, would give states the power to require retailers with sales over $1m to collect state and local sales taxes for online purchases.

The bill has the support of president Barack Obama the majority of senators including Republican John McCain but Marco Rubio, seen a potential Republican presidential hopeful, and Rand Paul both voted against the bill.

The bill passed the Senate by 70 votes to 24 but faces a second test in the House of Representatives where internet retailers and conservatives are already lobbying against the tax. House leaders have yet to schedule hearings or votes on their version of the measure.

The legislation would overturn a 1992 supreme court ruling that said a state could not force a retailer to collect sales tax unless the retailer had a physical presence in the state.

Senate passes Internet sales tax bill; House fate uncertain

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted 69-27 Monday to approve legislation that would allow states to force larger online retailers to collect sales taxes.

But the bill faces an uncertain future in the House as lawmakers, particularly Republicans, wrestle with whether the Marketplace Fairness Act amounts to a tax increase.

The Market Place Fairness Act would give states the authority to force larger retailers to collect sales taxes that residents already are obligated to pay. But with most consumers dodging those taxes for years, the result will be that people will pay more in taxes.

For influential activist Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, which asks lawmakers to sign a no-new-tax pledge, the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act is, in effect, a tax increase.

And his group, along with some other conservative activists, is pushing House members to reject it.

But some Republicans have pushed back, saying the bill raises no new taxes and just helps level the playing field between online and traditional bricks-and-mortar retailers.

Two of the leading Senate supporters were Repubilcans — Mike Enzi of Wyoming and Lamar Alexander of Tennesssee. And the bill passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support.

Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) is the main House sponsor and is hopeful the chamber will pass the bill.

But House leaders have not committed to taking up the legislation, saying it would first go to the House Judiciary Committee.

A new study of the Yellowstone National Park geyser shows that the underground plumbing of the Old Faithful looks like a bagpipe. Scientists report, in study published online March 30, 2013 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, that a big chamber is positioned about 15 meters (50 feet) underground, located southwest of Old Faithful.

The research presents another strong argument against the long-standing idea that big geysers erupt from long, narrow tubes. The researchers who uncovered new evidence of a chamber suspect that it stores the pressurized near-boiling water, steam, and other gases that propel Old Faithful’s eruptions

Old Faithful got its name because of its regular eruptions, which occur every 92 minutes on average. Almost immediately after an eruption, there’s a 15-minute recharge period with low water levels. After that for about 50 minutes, water levels rise and seismic activity increases. The cavern never fully empties, but as steam bubbles fill it, they can oscillate water in the conduit, eventually producing a strong steam explosion. This bubble trap is what makes Old Faithful splash with smaller eruptions before releasing its full force.

Many living in the Northern part of the country tonight are saying enough is enough as heavy snow and strong winds are producing blizzard like conditions and it’s not over yet. The Weather Channel’s Janel Klein reports.

Winter is still going strong in the West.

Schools were closed and the Legislature canceled its session Monday after a snowstorm broke records in North Dakota, and Wyoming and Colorado were bracing for another system that could dump as much as a foot and a half.

Almost all of Interstate 94 in North Dakota was under a no-travel advisory because of blizzard conditions, according to The Weather Channel. The IRS said it would waive late-filing fees for people in the state who could not submit their tax returns in time because of the storm.

Bismarck, the state capital, got more than 17 inches on Sunday, the largest snowfall there of any day on record.

The installation of powerful seismic sensors in Yellowstone National Park over the past four years to track the area’s sleeping volcano has incidentally provided insight into rhythmic wave events on Yellowstone Lake. “It’s pretty exciting,” said Karen Luttrell, a U.S. Geological Survey research geophysicist based in Menlo Park, Calif., who co-authored a paper on the seiche waves – pronounced saysh. “It’s a little surprising we detected it at all.” In Yellowstone, the sensitive sensors were picking up the wave pattern up to 19 miles away from the lake. The reason the seismic sensors were detecting the lake waves is that the waves were displacing so much water within the lake that the weight of the water was actually deforming the thinner Earth crust over the volcano’s caldera, propagating the wave through the Earth’s molten layer, located about 2 to 4 miles below, to the delicate sensors miles away.”So the crust kind of bends to get out of the way,” Luttrell said. The deformation is very small, only 1 to 2 nano strains – equal to about 1 or 2 microns over a distance of 2 kilometers. There are 25,400 microns in 1 inch. And the moon and sun daily cause strains of about 50 nano strains because of their gravitational pull. “So this is a really small deformation,” Luttrell said. The waves on the lake are equally small, rising only about an inch or two tall over the course of an hour and a half. But it may take a few days for the waves to dissipate. “You wouldn’t notice this if you were out fishing in a boat,” she said. But the waves are wide and displace a sizeable amount of water between the lake’s large basins. Water has been detected sloshing between the lake’s West Thumb and Southeast Arm at an interval of about 78 minutes. It also moves between the Southeast Arm and north end of the lake near Fishing Bridge at a rate of about every 51 minutes. “So even if it’s not very high, it’s a pretty big mass,” Luttrell said. By employing her calculator, Luttrell estimated that a 10 centimeter Yellowstone Lake seiche weighs about 5 million tons.

Nuclear Power  Truths

Recently there have  been  many  media  outlets publishing  articles  on the  Hanford Nuclear  Reservation Tanks  leaking Radioactive  waste underground  where  they are located.  Mixed  with a deadly  cocktail of  nuclear  waste  and  chemicals  that  not  even those directly responsible  and  in  charge of  the  safety  protocol and maintenance  of  said   tanks are  sure of.

These p;ants  like  Nuclear  Power  Plants  are  subsidized  with  taxpayer  monies.  However, any  upgrades  or  retrofitting  that  needs to  be  done must be paid  for  by the company  itself, not  taxpayer  funds.  Right off the  nat  the  fact that company  monies  must  be  used to  improve, repair  or safeguard the facility  for the  security of  the people that  live in the  surrounding areas, not to mention the  soil and the underground  water  supply.  A  water  supply  that  would concern areas   outside of the  immediate  are  of the  Plant.  The  Colorado  River  being one  of  the  sources in  danger.

According  to  Wikipedia information  available  about the  Colombia  River   Watershed, we are  looking  at  waterways basins  that  empty into and  mix  with  bodies  of  water all the  way  from Washington State  to the  Gulf  Of  Mexico.

We have  Governor Inslee  stating that there is  no  danger to  the  residents and  yet  there  have  been  issues  associated  with the  Hanford  site  since  before   2010.  That  is   3  years of  safety irregularities,  leaks  of  dangerous radioactive  waste  not only into the  ground endangering  the  water  shed  for  millions of  Americans both  directly  and  indirectly situated  near  Hanford.    Now  they are  trying to  tell us  that there is  no  danger  to the  public?  According to the  testimonies  given in the videos provided below.  It is  indeed  obvious that  the  leaks  have  been  an  ongoing  problem  that  was made clear  to  both the  management  of  the  Plant and  the  DOE.  Neither  of  which  made  any  move  to  correct.  Now  we  are  expected  to believe  that  there is no  danger  posed,  yet the  leaks  and  the danger  to  their   exposure  was  never addressed,  no one  cared.  SO  now  we  are  to  believe  the  very  same  entities that  have  lied to  us  for  well into  3  years?

How  stupid  do they  actually  think  we  are  ,  exactly ?

If the  testimony  being  given  is  to be  believed  then  not  only  has  our  watershed  been  compromised,  the  air around  the  plant has  been  compromised as  well.  Contaminating   the  residents  that  live  there  and   placing their  children in  danger.

The  Nuclear  Energy  Plants  and  these  Nuclear  Waste  Facilities  are  subsidized  by  taxpayer   monies yet  we  have  no  say  in  vetting there  safety  practices.    Nor  do  we apparently  have  any  say  in  the  approval  process of  these plants  either.   Recently the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved licenses to build two new nuclear reactors Thursday, the first authorized in over 30 years.  They  will be  built  in   Georgia  about   170 miles East  of  Atlanta.  The location  already contains  two  old  reactors.  Just  what  we  needed  …. more  radioactive  waste  to  be  housed  in these  leaky sieves  they call “Nuclear  Reservation Plants”

This is  madness and if it  continues  unchecked the  contamination of  Fukushima  and  Chernobyl  will look  like child’s play  compared  to the  disaster in the  making here  in the   US……..

Inslee says 6 underground tanks at Hanford leaking waste

After meeting with Energy Secretary Steven Chu Friday, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee says at least six underground single-shell tanks at Hanford Nuclear Reservation in eastern Washington are leaking, not one as reported last week.

Inslee called the latest development “very disturbing news” and called for a new action plan to remove the nuclear material.

“There is no immediate or near-term health risk associated with these newly discovered leaks, which are more than 10 miles from the Columbia River,” Inslee said in a news release. “But nonetheless this is disturbing news for all Washingtonians. One week ago, Secretary Chu told me there was one tank leaking. But he told me today that his department did not adequately analyze data it had that would have shown the other tanks that are leaking.”

The amount that is leaking varies from tank to tank, but Inslee did not have specific amounts.

Inslee says Chu blames the Department of Energy’s failure to catch the leaks on their inability to properly evaluate the data from the monitors. The leaking was so small over a short period of time that it was imperceptible. If they had looked at the data over a longer period of time, they would have detected the leaks earlier.

Chu said there will be additional evaluations and information released in the coming days.

The Columbia River is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region of North America.[9] The river rises in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It flows northwest and then south into the US state of Washington, then turns west to form most of the border between Washington and the state of Oregon before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The river is 1,243 miles (2,000 km) long, and its largest tributary is the Snake River. Its drainage basin is roughly the size of France and extends into seven U.S. states and a Canadian province.

Most of the Columbia’s drainage basin (which, at 258,000 square miles or 670,000 square kilometres, is about the size of France)[168] lies roughly between the Rocky Mountains on the east and the Cascade Mountains on the west. In the United States and Canada the term watershed is often used to mean drainage basin. The term Columbia Basin is used to refer not only to the entire drainage basin but also to subsets of the river’s full watershed, such as the relatively flat and unforested area in eastern Washington bounded by the Cascades, the Rocky Mountains, and the Blue Mountains.[169] Within the watershed are diverse landforms including mountains, arid plateaus, river valleys, rolling uplands, and deep gorges.

In 2000, about six million people lived within the Columbia’s drainage basin. Of this total about 2.4 million people lived in Oregon, 1.7 million in Washington, 1 million in Idaho, half a million in British Columbia, and 0.4 million in Montana. Population in the watershed has been rising for many decades and is projected to rise to about 10 million by 2030. The highest population densities are found west of the Cascade Mountains along the I-5 corridor, especially in the Portland-Vancouver urban area. High densities are also found around Spokane, Washington, and Boise, Idaho.

Several major North American drainage basins and many minor ones share a common border with the Columbia River’s drainage basin. To the east, in northern Wyoming and Montana, the Continental Divide separates the Columbia watershed from the Mississippi-Missouri watershed, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico. To the northeast, mostly along the southern border between British Columbia and Alberta, the Continental Divide separates the Columbia watershed from the Nelson-Lake Winnipeg-Saskatchewan watershed, which empties into Hudson Bay. The Mississippi and Nelson watersheds are separated by the Laurentian Divide, which meets the Continental Divide at Triple Divide Peak near the headwaters of the Columbia’s Flathead River tributary. This point marks the meeting of three of North America’s main drainage patterns, to the Pacific Ocean, to Hudson Bay, and to the Atlantic Ocean via the Gulf of Mexico.[174][175]

Further north along the Continental Divide, a short portion of the combined Continental and Laurentian divides separate the Columbia watershed from the MacKenzie-Slave-Athabasca watershed, which empties into the Arctic Ocean. The Nelson and Mackenzie watersheds are separated by a divide between streams flowing to the Arctic Ocean and those of the Hudson Bay watershed.[176] This divide meets the Continental Divide at Snow Dome (also known as Dome), near the northernmost bend of the Columbia River.[177]

To the southeast, in western Wyoming, another divide separates the Columbia watershed from the Colorado-Green watershed, which empties into the Gulf of California. The Columbia, Colorado, and Mississippi watersheds meet at Three Waters Mountain in the Wind River Range of Wyoming.[178] To the south, in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, the Columbia watershed is divided from the Great Basin, whose several watersheds are endorheic, not emptying into any ocean but rather drying up or sinking into sumps.[174] Great Basin watersheds that share a border with the Columbia watershed include Harney Basin, Humboldt River, and Great Salt Lake.[174] The associated triple divide points are Commissary Ridge North, Wyoming,[179] and Sproats Meadow Northwest, Oregon.[180] To the north, mostly in British Columbia, the Columbia watershed borders the Fraser River watershed. To the west and southwest the Columbia watershed borders a number of smaller watersheds that drain to the Pacific Ocean, such as the Klamath River in Oregon and California and the Puget Sound Basin in Washington.[174]

Six underground tanks that hold a brew of radioactive and toxic waste at the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site are leaking, federal and state officials said Friday, prompting calls for an investigation from a key senator.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said the leaking material poses no immediate risk to public safety or the environment because it would take a while — perhaps years — to reach groundwater.

But the leaking tanks raise new concerns about delays for emptying them and strike another blow to federal efforts to clean up south-central Washington’s Hanford Nuclear Reservation, where successes often are overshadowed by delays, budget overruns and technological challenges.

Department of Energy spokeswoman Lindsey Geisler said there was no immediate health risk and said federal officials would work with Washington state to address the matter.

Regardless, Tom Towslee, a spokesman for Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said the senator will be asking the Government Accountability Office to investigate Hanford’s tank monitoring and maintenance program.

Wyden is the new chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

State officials just last week announced that one of Hanford’s 177 underground tanks was leaking 150 to 300 gallons a year, posing a risk to groundwater and rivers. So far, nearby monitoring wells haven’t detected higher radioactivity levels.

Yesterday, Barack Obama won the presidential election. But, the people of six states voted to take their freedom without federal “permission.”
In ten states – Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Massachusetts and Alabama – voters had a chance to resist DC and approve ballot initiatives which would nullify unconstitutional federal acts. Six of them passed. And here’s a brief rundown of each:

1.  Montana, Referendum 122
LR-122 is an act “prohibiting the state or federal government from mandating the purchase of health insurance.”  It also prohibits the imposition of “penalties for decisions related to the purchase of health insurance coverage.”
The measure passed overwhelmingly, 65%-34%

2.  Colorado, Amendment 64
Section 3 allows the “personal use and regulation of marijuana” for adults 21 and over. Section 4 addresses legal commercial cultivation, manufacture, and sale. The intent is that marijuana be regulated in a manner similar to alcohol.
Colorado, after Washington State (info below), is the 2nd state in the country to have passed full legalization, and one of only a handful in the entire world.

3.  Alabama, Amendment 6
This legislatively-referred amendment frees Alabama citizens from any requirement to participate in Obamacare, or any other compulsory health care program. The ballot language reads as follows:
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to prohibit any person, employer, or health care provider from being compelled to participate in any health care system.
It passed, 59%-41%.

4.  Washington State, Initiative 502
Whatever you call the plant, Washington DC considers it dangerous and illegal. Laws on the books in Congress – illegal. The executive branch – aggressive about enforcing those laws. The supreme court – in 2005 ruled against the idea of states legalizing for any purpose.
But yet, 18 states have been standing up and defying DC on this issue by legalizing marijuana for limited medicinal purposes. Washington’s I-502 takes it a step further. It ends marijuana prohibition and treats pot in the same manner as alcohol. People are allowed to grow, produce, sell, buy and consume the plant – in direct defiance to all three branches of the federal government.

5.  Wyoming, Amendment A
Wyoming voters passed a health care freedom amendment to the Declaration of Rights in the state constitution.
The Wyoming Constitution now guarantees citizens of the state the right to make their own healthcare decisions with minimal governmental interference.
Article 1, Section 38 – Right of Health Care Access
(a) Each competent adult shall have the right to make his or her own health care decisions.  The parent, guardian or legal representative of any other natural person shall have the right to make health care decisions for that person.
(b) Any person may pay, and a health care provider may accept, direct payment for health care without imposition of penalties or fines for doing so.
It passed by a huge margin, 76%-24%

6.  Massachusetts, Question 3
A YES VOTE  on Question 3 enacted “the law eliminating state criminal and civil penalties related to the medical use of marijuana, allowing patients meeting certain conditions to obtain marijuana produced and distributed by new state-regulated centers or, in specific hardship cases, to grow marijuana for their own use.”
The 18th state to nullify federal laws on weed did it in a landslide. The final tally was 64%-36%

MOVING FORWARD
While supporters of the Constitution might be upset about another 4 years of Obama, strong Tenthers have been upset by every president in the last century. The Constitution isn’t going to be saved by federal politicians – the ones who are attacking it daily.
The only chance for liberty is for activists to focus their time, energy, money and resources on a state and local level – rejecting and nullifying every unconstitutional federal “law.”
