Sunlight is well-known to provide us vitamin D, but did you know that it kills pain, keeps us alert at night, burns fat and more…

Our biological connection and dependence to the sun is so profound, that the very variation in human skin color from African, melanin-saturated dark skin, to the relatively melanin de-pigmented, Caucasian lighter-skin, is a byproduct of the offspring of our last common ancestor from Africa (as determined by mitochondrial DNA) migrating towards sunlight-impoverished higher latitudes, which began approximately 60,000 years ago. In order to compensate for the lower availability of sunlight, the body rapidly adjusted, essentially requiring the removal of the natural “sunscreen” melanin from the skin, which interferes with vitamin D production; vitamin D, of course, is involved in the regulation of over 2,000 genes, and therefore is more like a hormone, without which our entire genetic infrastructure becomes destabilized.

1) Sunlight Has Pain-Killing (Analgesic) Properties: A 2005 study published in the journalPsychosomatic Medicine titled, “The effect of sunlight on postoperative analgesic medication use: a prospective study of patients undergoing spinal surgery,” analyzed patients staying on the bright side of the hospital unit who were exposed to 46% higher-intensity sunlight on average. The patients exposed to an increased intensity of sunlight experienced less perceived stress, marginally less, took 22% less analgesic medication per hour, and had 21% less pain medication costs. [i]

High levels of vitamin D deficiency observed in critically ill children

(NaturalNews)  There is something to be said for allowing your children copious amounts of free time outdoors to ride their bicycles, engage in sports activities, and play with their friends, especially if you want them to grow up to be healthy, strong, and vibrant members of society.   And a recent study published in the journal Pediatrics clearly illustrates this point, having found that many of the most critically ill children are also the ones with the most severe vitamin D deficiencies, which means these young ones are not getting enough natural sunlight exposure to maintain proper health.

For their study, Dr. Kate Madden, M.D., and her colleagues from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston evaluated 511 children, all of whom were severely or critically ill, and who had been admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for treatment between November 2009 and November 2010. Each of the children was also given a blood test, which was evaluated for concentrations of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D), a marker that is considered to be the most accurate indicator of vitamin D levels.

Upon evaluation, the team observed that the more ill a child was, the more likely he or she was to have inadequate or deficient levels of 25(OH)D. Similarly, the team noticed that higher levels of vitamin D were associated with fewer cases of illness. Children admitted to a PICU during the summer, for instance, or who had already been taking vitamin D3 supplements were far less likely to be critically ill compared to children admitted during the winter and not taking vitamin D3.

“We found a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in critically ill children, which was associated with higher critical illness severity,” wrote the authors in their abstract. “Vitamin D is essential for bone health and for cardiovascular and immune function. In critically ill adults, vitamin D deficiency is common and associated with sepsis and with higher critical illness severity.”

What these findings ultimately reveal, of course, is that children need sunlight in order to build immunity and stay healthy. Thanks to all the extensive research that has been conducted in recent years on the prohormone, we know that maintaining optimal blood levels of vitamin D between 50-80 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) is essential for deterring a myriad of chronic health conditions, including influenza, bacterial and viral infections, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders, among many others.

Vitamin D Tied to Women’s Cognitive Performance

Higher vitamin D dietary intake is associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to research conducted by a team led by Cedric Annweiler, MD, PhD, at the Angers University Hospital in France.

Similarly, investigators led by Yelena Slinin, MD, MS, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis found that low vitamin D levels among older women are associated with higher odds of global cognitive impairment and a higher risk of global cognitive decline.

Slinin’s group based its analysis on 6,257 community-dwelling older women who had vitamin D levels measured during the Study of Osteopathic Fractures and whose cognitive function was tested by the Mini-Mental State Examination and/or Trail Making Test Part B.

Very low levels of vitamin D (less than 10 nanograms per milliliter of blood serum) among older women were associated with higher odds of global cognitive impairment at baseline, and low vitamin D levels (less than 20 nanograms per milliliter) among cognitively-impaired women were associated with a higher risk of incident global cognitive decline, as measured by performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination.

Annweieler’s team’s findings were based on data from 498 community-dwelling women who participated in the Toulouse cohort of the Epidemiology of Osteoporosis study.

Among this population, women who developed Alzheimer’s disease had lower baseline vitamin D intakes (an average of 50.3 micrograms per week) than those who developed other dementias (an average of 63.6 micrograms per week) or no dementia at all (an average of 59.0 micrograms per week).

These reports follow an article published in the Journals of Gerontology Series A earlier this year that found that both men and women who don’t get enough vitamin D — either from diet, supplements, or sun exposure — may be at increased risk of developing mobility limitations and disability.

The parents of a toddler who died after contracting a rare bacterial infection blamed on contaminated medical wipes have settled their lawsuit against the Wisconsin firms that made them.

Sandra Kothari, 38, of Houston, declined to release details of the financial arrangement reached with the Triad Group and H&P Industries Inc. of Hartland, Wis.

But the mother of 2-year-old Harrison Kothari said she and her husband “reluctantly” sought to settle the case instead of bringing it to trial on the advice of lawyers.

Vitamin D may lower risk of deathly prostate cancer

Vitamin D does not protect men from getting prostate cancer, but it may lessen their chances of dying of it.

In a new study, men with the highest levels of vitamin D in their blood were 57 percent less likely than men with the lowest levels to succumb to prostate cancer.

However, no link was found between vitamin D levels and having prostate cancer, the researchers said.

“Prostate cancer is a very heterogeneous disease,” said study researcher Irene Shui, an epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health. CHESHIRE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An animal shelter official said puppies boosted the estimated number of dogs seized from a southwestern Michigan breeder’s home to at least 380, but that people from around the state are pitching in to help care for the animals.

Julie Kowal, office administrator of the Allegan County Animal Shelter, said that the original count of about 350 animals didn’t include puppies including three born Tuesday. The dogs were taken Monday from the home in Cheshire Township, about 40 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids.

“It’s been a zoo here,” said Jeff Stiegman, a board member of Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance, which operates the Allegan County Animal Shelter.

People from around the state have offered to help with the dogs, and many of the animals have been sent to other shelters. The county handled almost 900 phone calls Tuesday alone related to the dogs and Internet traffic crashed the shelter’s website, Stiegman said.

The sheriff’s department said Cheri and George Burke, both 64, were arraigned Wednesday at the Allegan County jail on felony animal cruelty charges following an investigation by animal control officers and sheriff’s officials. According to authorities, some of the dogs were covered in feces and fleas, and some had eye problems.

Some of the more than 350 rescued dogs are seen at a shelter.

They requested court-appointed lawyers, posted bond, were released.

Cheri Burke said she and the dogs have been misrepresented in reports about the condition of the animals. She denied that the animals were sick and said she signed away her rights to the dogs. She said she cared about the dogs and got behind on their care when she and her husband became ill.

“I got behind in grooming, but they weren’t sick,” she said.

Kent County Health Department records show this isn’t the first case for Cheri Burke involving a large number of dogs. In 2005, Kent County Animal Control officers said they found nearly 100 dogs at a Grand Rapids home where she lived. She was charged at the time with failure to obtain a kennel license, a misdemeanor, and fined $392.

In the latest case, the Allegan County sheriff’s department said the owners were breeding small dogs such as Pomeranians but had too many to adequately care for.

China detains 22 in toxic medicine scandal

Chinese police have detained 22 people for making drug capsules using a toxic raw material produced from scrap leather, state media said, in the latest in a string of product safety scandals.

Police in the eastern province of Zhejiang found the suspects allegedly made and sold capsules with excessive levels of chromium after using industrial gelatin made from discarded leather, the Xinhua News agency said late Monday.

Chromium, which has several industrial uses including leather tanning, can cause cancer.

China has been hit by a series of product safety scandals, often involving food or pharmaceuticals, despite government pledges to improve supervision, and public outrage over lax controls and official corruption is on the increase.

According to Xinhua, at least half of the people detained worked for capsule makers in Zhejiang’s Xinchang county, a major production base.

Police and government departments of Zhejiang and Xinchang county were not immediately available for comment.

According to the report, the industrial gelatin used to make the capsules came from other factories in the northern province of Hebei and the eastern province of Jiangxi.

In another twist to the scandal, police also detained a factory owner in Hebei for allegedly setting fire to his own plant to destroy evidence of making industrial gelatin, Xinhua said in a separate report Tuesday.

Song Xunjie, manager of the Xueyang Glair Gelatin Factory, is said to be a supplier to companies across the country, it added.

The government’s State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), the industry regulator, on Sunday also suspended sales of 13 types of drugs confirmed to have excessive levels of chromium.

The case is the latest in a long series of product safety scandals.

In November last year, authorities busted a gang that produced and sold fake medicine — some made of animal feed — arresting 114 suspects and seizing more than 65 million counterfeit tablets.

And Zheng Xiaoyu, former head of the SFDA, was executed in 2007 for accepting $850,000 in bribes in exchange for granting approval for hundreds of medicines, some later found to be dangerous.
