Survivor of Texas fertilizer plant explosion recalls horror; cause of blast remains unknown (GRAPHIC IMAGE)

Misty Lambert, a mom of five, said she was watching the plant engulfed in flames April 17 when she was hit by the blast. She suffered wounds across her body and required 1,000 stitches.

Misty Lambert, 37, was injured in the West Fertilizer Co. plant explosion near Waco, Texas. She lived in the apartment complex that sits directly behind the plant.

A powerful blast at a West, Texas, fertilizer plant left survivor Misty Lambert with 1,000 stitches across her body. But one thing it couldn’t damage was her fighting spirit.

While the 37-year-old mom underwent 20 hours of surgery following last Wednesday’s explosion — the worst U.S. industrial disaster in three years — her outlook remains hopeful.

ā€œIt’s another bump in the road for me,ā€ Lambert told ABC affiliate KVUE-TV. ā€œI’m saddened by the fact that people lost their lives, but I’m grateful that I still have my life.ā€

The blast at the West Fertilizer Co. near Waco killed at least 14 people, injured more than 200 and flattened the surrounding residential area into rubble and ash.

Emergency crews worked frantically to sift through ruins for survivors. Six firefighters and four emergency medics are among the dead.

Cable news and Rick Perry sweep Texas fertilizer plant’s poor regulatory record under the rug

by Laura ClawsonFollow for Daily Kos Labor

The remains of a fertilizer plant burn after an explosion at the plant in the town of West, near Waco, Texas early April 18, 2013. The deadly explosion ripped through the fertilizer plant late on Wednesday, injuring more than 100 people, leveling dozens o

If you’ve been reading reporting on the fertilizer plant explosion that killed 14 in West, Texas, late last week, you know about safety and environmental compliance problems at the plant, going back decades. If you’re relying on cable news as a source of information, you probably don’t know quite as much. West Fertilizer Co. had not followed disclosure rules about the massive amount of ammonium nitrate it had been storing over the past year, but cable news isn’t reporting on that:

A Media Matters study found that following the Reuters report, CNN’s coverage of the explosion never mentioned that West Fertilizer violated federal regulations by failing to disclose their storage of 270 tons of ammonium nitrate, and MSNBC and Fox News rarely mentioned the violation.Between 8:38 am on April 20, when Reuters’ story was published, and 9:00 am on April 23, CNN featured 24 segments on the story, many of which mentioned that ammonium nitrate was stored at the plant, but failed to note the DHS reporting violation.

MSNBC featured 16 segments on the story in that time frame, 15 of which did not mention Reuters’ report; in one segment on April 21, NBC’s Charles Hadlock noted that the plant had “several tons of ammonium nitrate” but then wondered out loud, “What is the limit of the amount of ammonium nitrate fertilizer that one company can store without notifying federal authorities? That’s an unknown question right now.” However, on his April 22 show, host Chris Hayes devoted several minutes to covering the Reuters report and concluded, “If the Department of Homeland Security didn’t know about the West Fertilizer plant, what other plants does it not know about?”

The West, Texas, fertilizer plant destroyed by a massive explosion has paid nearly $8,000 to at least two regulatory agencies for safety and transportation violations, records show.

West Fertilizer Co. paid $5,250 last year to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration over violations discovered in 2011, according to records reviewed by the Los Angeles Times.

A federal inspector found three violations at the fertilizer facility that included transporting anhydrous ammonia without a security plan and carrying it in tanks that were improperly labeled, records show.

The agency fined the company $10,100 – reducing the fine by $1,400 for corrective actions taken by the fertilizer facility’s manager. In the end, the company paid the $5,250 after taking further corrective actions.

The fertilizer plant that exploded in West, Texas on Wednesday night was fined by the Environmental Protection agency in 2006 for failing to have a risk management plan that met federal standards, an EPA report shows.

The $2,300 penalty was issued on August 14, 2006, records show. According to the EPA, a risk management plan is designed to ensure chemical accidents don’t happen by having safeguards in place to prevent them.

Quoting from its website, a risk management plan “includes an executive summary, registration information, off-site consequence analysis, five-year accident history, prevention program and emergency response program.”

The plant was not fined again by the EPA after that incident.

According to construction permits submitted in November of that year, West Fertilizer Co. vowed to meet all standards expected for anhydrous ammonia storage tanks. The odorless gas would be stored in two 12,000 gallon permanent storage tanks.

HOUSTON — Texas is no stranger to ammonium nitrate fertilizer explosions.

Exactly 66 years ago this week, what remains the nation’s worst industrial disaster occurred when a series of explosions rocked the huge waterfront petrochemical complex at Texas City, southeast of Houston and across the bay from Galveston.

At least 576 people were killed and 5,000 were injured.

Like the Central Texas blast Wednesday evening in West that may have killed as many as 15 people, the Texas City disaster began with a fire.

At about 8 a.m. on April 16, 1947, a thick reddish-orange smoke began billowing from the No. 4 hold on the 7,176-ton French freighter S.S. Grandcamp. Workers from the nearby Monsanto Chemical Co. plant joined hundreds of others near Warehouse Pier ā€œOā€ at the Port of Texas City to watch.

The ship, which was carrying 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, blew up at 9:21 a.m.

A second blast erupted five seconds later, followed by others.

The explosions were so powerful windows broke in Baytown, 25 miles away. Two small airplanes flying over the burning ship at the time of the blast were blown out of the sky, killing four people. A 15-foot tidal wave rolled from the explosion site, lifting a 150-foot-long oil barge out of the water and dropping it high and dry 200 feet away.

The S.S. High Flyer, a 6,214-ton freighter also loaded with ammonium nitrate at an adjacent pier, was torn from its berth and caught fire. Volunteer crews eventually gave up trying to pull the vessel from the area. Sixteen hours later, it blew up.

Shrapnel-like debris from the Grandcamp struck the Monsanto plant like a machine gun, igniting huge storage tanks and severing pipelines that spewed flammable liquids.

One of the fires burned for a week.

Before the Blast, West Fertilizer’s MonsantoĀ Lawsuit

AP

Firefighter conduct search and rescue of an apartment destroyed by an explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas

By Alexandra Berzon

As details emerge about the Texas fertilizer plant that was the site of Wednesday’s fatal explosion and fire, a few tidbits can be gleaned from a 2007 lawsuit that the plant’s owners filed against agribusiness giant Monsanto Co. MONĀ -1.61%

The suit, filed as a potential class action in U.S. District Court for the western district of Texas, claimed that Monsanto had artificially inflated prices for its herbicide Roundup through anti-competitive actions.Ā The suit did not relate to storing fertilizer, believed to be at the root of Wednesday’s blast.

The suit was filed by Texas Grain Storage Inc. The company now calls itself West Fertilizer Co.

In the suit, the company said that it was started in 1957 as a grain-storage business by the Plasek family in the town of West, Texas. It later built a small fertilizer-blend plant and started selling fertilizer to area farmers.

Zak Covar, executive director of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, told a news conference Wednesday that the fertilizer storage and blending facility had been there since 1962.

The popularity of US President Barak Obama is continuing to decrease. Recently, another scandal broke out which made it decrease further. It has become known that the US secret services had failed an operation against the Mexican mafia. However, for some reason, Mr. Obama is trying to hush up the details of the unsuccessful operation.

The governor of Texas Rick Perry has compared these attempts of Mr. Obama to the notorious attempts of President Nixon to hush up the Watergate scandal.

Mr. Perry, probably, really has the right to say so. The fact itself that the secret services failed this operation works against the popularity of the current US president. It seems to be understood by everybody that the best thing to keep a good reputation after making a mistake is to openly acknowledge it and to apologize for it. But the US administration, for some reason, has chosen the worst scenario – the policy of hushing up the details of this mistake.

The operation, called ā€œFast and Furious,ā€ was carried out by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was planned that agents of this bureau, under the guise of weapon smugglers, would sell weapons to Mexican criminal groups, and, then, catch them red-handed.

The first part of this plan was successful. A big amount of weapons was really sold to the Mexican mafia. However, it turned out that not all the criminals were caught red-handed. Moreover, the largest part of these weapons remained in the hands of criminals. Two Kalashnikov guns from this lot were found at the place of the murder of US border guard Brian Terry. It was also found out that other weapons from this lot had also been used for a number of murders in Mexico.

An investigation of this case started in the US. However, some details of this case looked so scandalous for certain high-ranking US politicians that they tried to hamper this investigation.

For example, recently, the House of Representatives demanded that the US Attorney General Eric Holder should be charged of lack of respect for the Congress. The reason for that is that Mr. Holder has concealed several documents concerning the failed operation with weapons from the Department of Justice. For some reason, President Obama, instead of ordering to make the documents concealed by Mr. Holder public, ordered to further keep them secret. (It is in the US laws that the president has the right for an individual decision of putting a label of secrecy on any documents.) This decision of Mr. Obama made many people suspect that these documents really hold something which the US authorities prefer not to reveal.

For Republicans, this was another chance to criticize their perpetual opponents, the Democrats. As it has already been mentioned, the governor of Texas Rick Perry compared this story with the Watergate scandal.

The name ā€œWatergate scandalā€ refers to the notorious scandal of 1972, when the Republican Party was accused of setting eavesdropping devices in rooms occupied by Democrats in the Watergate Hotel in Washington. As a result of that scandal, US President Richard Nixon, a Republican, had to retire.

Rick Perry stresses that the Watergate scandal, for all its ugliness from the moral point of view, was, in fact, a minor accident in comparison with the failure of the operation ā€œFast and Furious.ā€ This failure may have presented a serious threat for the security of the whole US, Mr. Perry insists.

The failure of the operation was a serious mistake for President Obama’s administration – but the attempts to hush up its details were probably a not lesser mistake. At present, when President Obama’s popularity is catastrophically declining, such mistakes are something what Mr. Obama needs less of all. Such mistakes may make many of those who voted for Barack Obama refrain from voting for him again at the coming presidential elections.

In fact, Mr. Obama has fulfilled very few, if any, of his promises of his first pre-election campaign. In 2008, he promised to bring order into the country’s home policy. Now, when his first (and, probably, the only) presidential term is nearly over, the US has managed to spoil the relations with Pakistan, which used to be probably the US’s most reliable partner in the whole Moslem world.

During his first pre-election campaign, Barack Obama promised to do away with the legacy of the gloomy epoch of George W. Bush – the notorious prisons for POWs. However, the prisons are still functioning. Besides, Mr. Obama is risking to lose the respect of the Hispanic population of the US because of his inability to resist the adoption of stricter laws of control over immigration. Recently, Mr. Obama abolished a number of tough anti-immigrant laws in the Alabama state, but did not abolish the right of the state’s authorities to check documents of people who are suspected of violating the US laws on immigration. However, initially, Mr. Obama promised to totally abolish such checking, saying that this practice runs counter to the US constitution.

But these are not the only reasons for the US citizens to be dissatisfied with President Obama. Many Americans believe that it is the ineffectual policy of the Republican Party, of which Mr. Obama is a member, that has drawn the country into a deep financial crisis. However, the Republicans are now trying to make President Obama a scapegoat for this.

Only a miracle can help Barack Obama to regain his former popularity again. But miracles, as a rule, happen very rarely.

Texas, Time to Secede or Be Ruled By Globalist Puppets in Both Poltical Parties.

This election is a joke. There is no evidence to say the elections are fair, accurate or have any credibility. Texas cannot afford another fourĀ  years under Obama or Romney. If Obama wins a second term, we will get more of the same and worse. If Romney wins, there will be no difference in policy either. He is for gun control and socialized medicine. Romney is a vanilla ice version of Obama. There is not a dimes worth of difference between the two candidates. So what should Texas do to ensure its own survival to maintain her economic and cultural heritage?

First things Texans should do, that is recall Governor Rick Perry and Lt Governor David Dewhurst to remove both from office. They both talk a good talk, saying they will not allow Washington DC to interfere in the business of Texas; their lack of actions on the behalf of Texans speaks louder then words. They both are derelict in their duties and have behind the scenes have killed bills that were good for Texans siding with special interest.

They were silent during the rolling blackouts in February 2011 allowing the EPA to shut off our coal power plants on the coldest day of winter. Both were silent and out to lunch.

They have failed to send law enforcement officers to the Airport and enforce existing state law prohibiting TSA for touching people in private areas against their will. Lt Gov Dewhurst twisted the State Senators arms on the Senate Floor with a Rep from Obama’s DOJ to kill the bill after the House voted overwhelmingly in favor. Gov Perry waited the last minute to put the bill back on the agenda of the special session making it impossible to pass due to lack of time left in the session. Both these men coordinated behind the scenes to kill this legislation that would have been a major victory for state’s rights.

They have allowed the EPA to come into Texas and shut down coal power plants without any law to justify the actions.

They have no stood up for the Texas oil industry when Obama was on contempt of court not allowing offshore drilling.

They have stood silent while Obama came in and took over the permit process for refineries and power plants that was reserved for Texas only.

They violated the Logan Act. Rick Perry attending Bilderberg meeting in Istanbul Turkey in 2006, David Dewhurst attended Bretton Woods II in 2011 meeting behind closed doors with George Soros talking about economic policy in secrecy.

Gov Rick Perry and Lt Gov David Dewhurst both work for the same foreign banks Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney bow to and take orders from the same oligarchs. Texas cannot have this anymore if she is going to survive.

These two will stand in the way allowing Texans to vote on shall we be a part of the Untied States or secede from the union? If Texas does secede, we cannot have these men in power because they will make sure we are beholden to the UN and a private central bank.

If Barrack Obama wins, a second term or Mitt Romney is the 45th President. First, we cannot have Perry and Dewhurst in power to thwart the will of Texans. They will go along with the same globalist agenda regardless who is in the White House.

I see secession being the only choice now facing Texas now if freedom is going to survive and her dignity kept in tact. We cannot allow to be governed by a false choice that was chosen by the ruling oligarchs and not Texans themselves. Mitt Romney is not a dimes worth of difference than Obama. They are both stand for things Texas is against in their true beliefs. Texas does not want Obamacare. Romney and Obama both endorse Socialized medicine. They both are for gun control. Romney signed the assault weapons ban in 2004. The both are pro abortion. They both are for carbon taxes and banker bailouts.

President Obama if he wins a second term will use the pen to sign executive orders bypassing congress to implement gun control and agenda 21. Texas needs a governor and a Lt Gov who will govern as the President of the Senate who can set the agenda for the state to erect barriers against illegal Federal encroachments. If the Federal government does not respect the state’s right to govern as they see fit. We can secede by a vote of the state legislature or a direct election with a simple up and down vote,

Texas is in a unique position to make her own way to be a state or be a republic once more. Sam Houston prophesied” Texas will again lift its head, and stand among the nations” That time is coming soon where Texas will have to make a choice or fade into history under the globalist dictatorship. It is all in God’s hands for now.
