(KMOV) — Taser policies are under the microscope after a video posted to YouTube shows a police officer using a stun gun on a woman who’s eight months pregnant.

The woman screamed at officers that she’s pregnant, but they delivered a shock of 50,000 volts to her leg in a parking lot in Springfield, Illinois.

That police department is defending the officer’s actions.  News 4 spoke with St. Louis County Police, who say they don’t have an expressed policy against using a Taser on a pregnant woman.

It’s not even a last resort option.

It all depends on the circumstances, which is a heavy decision for an officer.

On-lookers are clearly shocked as they watch as a Springfield police officer struggles with Lucinda White, then tasers her in the thigh.

“I’m pulling on my daughter’s father. I did not touch a police officer. I know not to touch a police officer,” said White.

Super-sized mosquitoes as big as quarters which can bite through clothing are headed to Florida ‘in large numbers’ this summer

Mega-mosquitoes which are the size of quarters are expected to take over areas of Florida ‘in large numbers’ this summer, scientists have warned.

The special breed of the nuisance bug, which can be 20 times bigger than common menacing Asian tiger mosquitoes, are described as ‘notoriously aggressive’.

They were handed the perfect breeding ground by last year’s tropical storms, according to scientists at the University of Florida, so are coming to a town near you.

‘Because of the events last year, and the eggs laid, we can expect large numbers of these mosquitoes again,’ Entomologist Phil Kaufman, an associate professor with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, told the Gainsville Sun.

‘It is quite capable of biting through my shirt.

‘We suggest people wear long-sleeve pants and shirts. Just doing that may not be enough for this type of mosquito; you’re going to have use one of the insect repellants to dissuade them from landing.’

‘The bite really hurts, I can attest to that,’ he told science site phys.org.

Psorophora ciliata, or Gallinipper mosquitoes as they are commonly known, have half inch long bodies and the same black-white color pattern of the more common Asian Tiger Mosquito with a wingspan of 6-7 millimeters.

OuchOuch: Mega-mosquito bites hurt much more than usual mosquito bites according to the experts, who say the insects can even bite through clothing

……

Quarter-Sized Mosquitoes Really Exist

If you dislike mosquitoes, you’ll really have daggers for the gallinipper — a giant mosquito that is about 20 times the size of a regular mosquito. It’s big enough to cover a quarter. The insect lives in low-lying areas that overflow with water. They are native to the eastern half of North America, but come out in large numbers when an area is hit by heavy rain, such as in a tropical storm or hurricane.

Florida was invaded by the gallinipper last summer after Tropical Storm Debbie. The case is likely to be the same this year, University of Florida entomologist Phil Kaufman said in a statement.

The whopper of a bug has an equally big bite, which can really hurt when its mouth pierces the skin, says Kaufman. As with other mosquitoes, only the females bite and feed on blood.

The sleet and snow that fell on January 15 2013 in White County Arkansas was not normal. Background levels in this area are 35cpm. The sleet and snow was showing an alert level above 100cpm. The high levels only lasted about 24 hours indicating a short half life of the hot particles. This kind of exposure can reduce the immune system and may be the cause for recent spikes in flu and illness in this area and others. We can only assume because the event was short lived is why they are not warning parents to keep there children out of this unsafe wintery mix. Not creating panic or concern seems to be more important than public safety. Why warn parents exposure to the snow and sleet is equal to flying at 30000 feet or exposure levels for nuclear plant workers right?

Boys in U.S. Experiencing Early Onset of Puberty

A study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has documented that boys in the U.S. are experiencing the onset of puberty six months to two years earlier than reported in previous research.

The study, “Secondary Sexual Characteristics in Boys: Data from the Pediatric Research in Office Settings Network,” will be published in the November 2012 Pediatrics and published online Oct. 20 to coincide with the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. The trend toward earlier onset of puberty in girls is now generally accepted and supported by extensive research. Until now, little research was available on the age of onset of puberty in boys in contemporary times.

The study was designed and conducted through the AAP Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) practice-based research network, a system of hundreds of pediatricians nationwide who contribute data to AAP-led scientific studies on children’s health. A 1997 PROS study was the first large study to document earlier pubertal onset in US girls. For the study of pubertal characteristics in boys, 212 practitioners in 144 pediatric offices in 41 states recorded information on more than 4,100 boys.

This new research found that the observed mean ages of stage 2 genital and pubic hair growth, and early testicular enlargement — standard indications of pubertal onset — were six months to two years earlier than documented by data several decades earlier. Pediatricians recorded the earliest stage of puberty as occurring in non-Hispanic white boys at age 10.14 years; in non-Hispanic African-American boy at age 9.14 years, and in Hispanic boys at age 10.4.

Overall, African-American boys were more likely to start puberty earlier than white or Hispanic boys. Study authors say the causes and public health implications of an apparent shift toward a lower age of puberty onset for boys is unclear and warrants further research.

“Contemporary data on the ages of pubertal characteristics in U.S. boys from onset to maturity, lacking until now, are needed by pediatricians, public health scientists, and parents,” said study author Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, DrPH. “Following changes in growth and development is an important part of assessing the health of the nation’s children. I am grateful to the pediatricians and the boys who participated in this exciting study.”

“All parents need to know whether their sons are maturing within the contemporary age range, but, until now, this has not been known for U.S. boys,” said PROS Director Richard C. Wasserman, MD, MPH, FAAP. “The PROS study provides 21st century standards.”

“The landmark PROS study of the 1990s provided contemporary data for girls’ puberty,” Dr. Wasserman said. “A study on boys puberty was a logical follow-up. Our pediatric endocrinologist colleagues now use the PROS puberty assessment training materials in their own studies and fellowship training.”

It’s been almost two weeks of protests against police brutality in Anaheim, California. The community has taken to the streets after police killed two unarmed Latino men. Local news outlets couldn’t ignore what was going, but the mainstream media seemed to turn a blind eye and now there is another police crackdown they seem to have missed. Wells Fargo pays $175M to settle race discrimination probe

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The Justice Department says Wells Fargo & Co. will pay at least $175 million to settle accusations that it allegedly discriminated against qualified African-American and Hispanic borrowers in its mortgage lending from 2004 through 2009.

The settlement, which needs approval from a judge, would end the investigation into whether the fourth largest U.S. bank between 2004 and 2009 knowingly targeted minorities for risky mortgages that came with higher costs, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

“The Department of Justice today filed the second largest fair lending settlement in the department’s history to resolve allegations that Wells Fargo Bank, the largest residential home mortgage originator in the United States, engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination against qualified African-American and Hispanic borrowers in its mortgage lending from 2004 through 2009,” said a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The settlement will provide $125 million in compensation for minority borrowers the DOJ said were steered into subprime mortgages, which usually carry higher fees. Wells Fargo will pay $50 million more in direct down payment assistance to borrowers in parts of the country where the DOJ identified large numbers of discrimination victims.

At a news conference, Deputy Attorney General James Cole said the government will ensure that borrowers hit hard by the housing crisis will have an opportunity to access homeownership.

Cole said the bank’s discriminatory lending practices resulted in more than 34,000 African-American and Hispanic borrowers in 36 states and the District of Columbia paying higher rates for loans solely because of the color of their skin.

Wells Fargo in May said it could face civil charges under laws that prohibit discrimination against minority homebuyers. At the time, the lender said in a securities filing it believed the charges should not be brought and said it was seeking to show the department that it is in compliance with fair lending laws.

The government investigation found that loans submitted to Wells Fargo by mortgage brokers had varied interest rates, fees, and costs based only on race and not correlated to the borrowers’ creditworthiness, according to the court document.

Wells Fargo noted in a statement that it has denied the claims.

“Wells Fargo is settling this matter solely for the purpose of avoiding contested litigation with the DOJ,” it said, “and to instead devote its resources to continuing to provide fair credit services and choices to eligible customers and important and meaningful assistance to borrowers in distressed U.S. real estate markets.”

The disclosure came after Bank of America Corp’s Countrywide Financial unit agreed in December to pay a record $335 million to settle similar charges.

Last year, San Francisco-based Wells Fargo received an $85 million penalty from the Federal Reserve Board over charges it steered borrowers into high-cost loans. The Fed ordered Wells to compensate certain borrowers between $1,000 and $20,000.

The cities of Baltimore and Memphis filed suits alleging Wells Fargo engaged in “reverse redlining,” or intentionally targeting minority communities for predatory mortgage loans, leading to high foreclosures in minority neighborhoods.

In May, Memphis agreed to drop its suit after Wells Fargo agreed to contribute $7.5 million toward local homeowner and economic development initiatives. The bank also set a $425 million mortgage lending goal in the Memphis area, including $125 million in loans for low- and moderate-income borrowers.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina—Argentina’s defense minister is visiting China, signing military agreements and praising the weapons on display during a six-day tour.

Defense minister Arturo Puricelli says cooperation agreements that he signed with Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie will strengthen ties between the Asian giant and Argentina.

He calls China an economic, political and military partner and says the two countries’ strategic positions in terms of international security are almost entirely consistent.

Argentina’s defense ministry says in a Wednesday statement that Puricelli also has visited Chinese defense contractors, viewing helicopters at one and guided weapon systems and anti-aircraft artillery at another.

Chinese state-run media in Beijing have reported on the visit and say China wants to expand military cooperation with Argentina.

Bath Salts Behind 20-Year-Old Attacking Elderly Woman Near Los Angeles [REPORT]

IBTimes

Bath salts are reportedly behind 20-year-old Robert William White’s attack on an elderly woman outside Los Angeles on Thursday, police said.

Bath salts are reportedly behind 20-year-old Robert William White’s attack on an elderly woman outside Los Angeles on Thursday, police said.

White, of Glendale, Calif., became the latest violent offender arrested while allegedly on bath salts when he was collared Thursday after bludgeoning an elderly woman in the head with a shovel and locking himself inside his apartment for about an hour, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Police had to use a rubber bullet and a Taser electroshock weapon to subdue White and strap him to a stair chair so he could be wheeled out of his home, the Times reported.

As White was escorted out of his apartment, the Times said he screamed, “God loves all you,” at onlookers near his apartment on Spazier Avenue.

Robert William White was taken to a nearby hospital. White has allegedly admitted that he had been taking bath salts mixed with soda before he went into the state of mind that led him to attack his neighbor, who the New York Daily News said was 77 years old. Her name has yet to be released by authorities.

“He seemed completely out of sorts,” Northwest Glendale Police Lt. Bruce Fox told the Times.

Salbi Dgerdzyan, one of White’s neighbors, told the Times that White told his victim, “I hate you and I want to kill you today,” after she told him to stop swinging a shovel at birds. That was when he turned on her and hit her in the head with the shovel.

The victim was also taken to a nearby hospital, where the Times reported that she was treated for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Before the attack, a neighbor allegedly heard Robert William White breaking glass and screaming profanities.

The attack was the latest in a recent string of attacks that have given their allegedly bath-salts-ridden perpetrators odd nicknames like “cannibal” or “zombie.”

Bath salts, a synthetic drug that is legal in many parts of the U.S. and about which little is known, are being linked to a rising number of violent incidents, causing nationwide concern over their proliferation.

Outrage over them reached a fever pitch in May, when Rudy Eugene allegedly took bath salts and got naked before attacking a homeless man, Donald Poppo, by eating pieces of his face in broad daylight on a Miami street.

The attack was caught on video, and Eugene was killed by police who were trying to break up the fight. Shortly thereafter, the case became international news as accounts of the “Miami zombie” fanned fears of a “zombie apocalypse.”

The Miami city government has since banned bath salts in response to the horrific attack. However, there is no evidence Eugene ingested bath salts around the time it was carried out.

Reportedly, there have been several other recent violent incidents involving folks using bath salts, sparking an international conversation about its dangers.
