Heat Wave in USA on Sunday, 08 July, 2012 at 11:40 (11:40 AM) UTC.

Description
Americans in much of the country on Sunday will get a slight break from temperatures that were near or above the 100 a day earlier. But for many, the cooler temperatures won’t exactly be comfortable – they’ll fall only into the 90s. Cooler air is sweeping southward in the eastern half of the country on Sunday, bringing down some temperatures by 15 degrees or more from Saturday’s highs. In St. Louis, the 13-degree drop from Saturday’s high still will leave residents baking in 93-degree weather – the high Saturday was a record 106. Temperatures in Philadelphia, Washington, and Indianapolis will fall to the low 90s or upper 80s on Sunday after crossing the 100 mark on Saturday. Residents in Louisville, Ky., can expect a high of 95 after 105-degree temperatures Saturday. For many areas, the cooler temperatures were ushered in by thunderstorms that knocked out power to thousands of electricity customers.

The heat also is blamed for more than 30 deaths across the country. A 4-month-old girl died and a 16-month-old girl was hospitalized Saturday in separate incidents in suburban Indianapolis when both were found trapped in cars during near-record 105-degree heat. Residents from Iowa to New Jersey spent Saturday trying to stay cool. They dipped into the water, went to the movies and rode the subway just to be in air conditioning. If people ventured outside to do anything, they did it early. But even then, the heat was stifling. “It was baking on the 18th green,” said golfer Zeb Rogerson, who teed off at 6 a.m. at an Alexandria, Va., golf course but was sweltering by the end of his round. Officials said the heat caused highways to buckle in Illinois and Wisconsin. In Maryland, investigators said heat likely caused rails to kink and led a Metro train to partially derail in Prince George’s County on Friday afternoon. No one was injured, and 55 passengers were safely evacuated. Micah Straight, 36, brought his three daughters to dance in jets of water spurting from a “sprayground” near Philadelphia’s Logan Square fountain to cool off.

“We got here early, because I don’t think we’ll be out this afternoon – we’ll be in the air conditioning,” he said. “So I wanted to get them out, get some sunshine, get tired.” In South Bend, Ind., serious kayakers Saturday took to the East Race Waterway, a 1,900-foot long manmade whitewater course near downtown. “A lot of times I’ll roll over just to cool off,” said Robert Henry of Carmel, just north of Indianapolis. “The biggest challenge is walking coming back up carrying a kayak three-eighths of a mile in this heat.” In Manhattan, customers who stepped in to see “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” at an IFC movie theater were there for more than entertainment. “Of course we came to cool off!” said John Villanova, a writer who was on his second sweaty T-shirt of the day – expecting to change again by evening. He said that earlier, he rode a Manhattan subway back and forth for a half an hour, with no destination in mind, “because it really keeps you cool.”

One man figured out a way to beat the heat: stay in the car. Roger Sinclair of Batavia, Ill., was headed home Saturday from Detroit, where he’d spent a few days visiting an old friend and catching Friday night’s Tigers game. The Tigers won 4-2, but the conditions were less than ideal. “It was 97 at the first pitch and still in the 80s at the time of the last out,” he said. “It was tough. There was no breeze.” Sinclair said he had been spending hours in his air-conditioned car to stay out the worst of the heat. In Chicago, street magician Jeremy Pitt-Payne said he has been working throughout the three-day stretch of triple-digit temperatures, but acknowledged that he might doff the Union Jack leather vest by the end of the day, even though it’s part of his British magician character along with the black top hat.

Today Tornado USA State of Virginia, Fredericksburg Damage level
Details

Tornado in USA on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 03:24 (03:24 AM) UTC.

Description
A tornado hit a building in Fredericksburg this evening as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. The roof of one building reportedly flew off and hit a home about 40 yards away on Fleming Street. “It started hailing golfball-sized hail and then the lights went out,” said Mandy Spina, the director of Cheer Fusion gym at 86 Fleming St. “It was torrential downpour, and I told the kids to get into the dance room because it is steel re-inforced. Bricks started flying and the walls caved in.”
Today Tornado USA State of Virginia, Spotsylvania Damage level
Details

Tornado in USA on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 03:22 (03:22 AM) UTC.

Description
The Free-Lance Star reported that Spotsylvania fire and rescue authorities said “what appeared to be a tornado touched down off Lafayette Boulevard in Spotsylvania County this afternoon, collapsing two buildings …” Asst. Chief Mark Kuechler with the Spotsylvania Fire Department told the Free-Lance Star that the most significant damage was on Lafayette Boulevard and Route 1. Cheer Fusion, which Kuechler said was made of mostly concrete blocks, collapsed and suffered some of the most significant damage in the area. Kuechler said that there was a cheerleading practice hosted inside when the building collapsed and that “miraculously they all made it out.” There were seven minor injuries. Four were transported to the Mary Washington hospital with non-life threatening injuries and there were three refusals for medical help. A private residence collapsed from the blown debris of Cheer Fusion. There was a gentlemen in the home who was uninjured said Kuechler. Kuechler said that most of the buildings nearby were affected by straight-line wind damage.

Mandy Spina, the director of Cheer Fusion said that golf-ball sized hail fell, and that there was no visibility due to heavy rain. Spina said that the kids were practicing on the main dance floor room when the storm hit. She told the Free-Lance Star that there were 14 cheerleaders, ages 11 to 18, in the facility for a practice when the storm hit. She said that a coach and about 10 parents also were there. She said that one of the father’s suggested they move to a separate steel-reinforced room just off of the main dance room. She said that after the storm passed they opened the door of the dance studio to find nothing left. Jared Klein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sterling office, told the Free-Lance Star that based on a description of the damage, he said it sounded more like a microburst than a tornado. He said that official won’t confirm if it was a tornado until they can inspect the damaged area or scrutinize photographs of the event. The storms drastically reduced weather temperatures, by about 32 degrees. The weather station at the University of Mary Washington reported a high of 100 degrees at 3:16 p.m. After the storm, the thermometer dropped 32 degrees to 68 just before 6 p.m.

Published on Jul 8, 2012 by

Heavy rainfall is pounding parts of northern and southwestern China, triggering floods that are destroying crops and infrastructure. By Saturday afternoon, 38,000 residents from one northern province had been affected by the floods. Thousands of houses in the area have collapsed and vast swathes of farmland have been inundated, causing over 40 million USD of damage, according to state broadcaster CCTV. In nearby areas, torrential rains caused many major roads to collapse and sent rivers gushing over the banks. Meanwhile, in southwestern Sichuan Province, the storm had affected over 2 million people, and 30,000 had been relocated as of Thursday. China’s meteorological authorities on Sunday forecast more heavy rain northern, southwestern and eastern parts of the country in the coming three days, according the officials Xinhua news agency. http://www.reuters.com/video/2012/07/08/devastating-floods-sweep-china?videoI…

Flash Flood in Pakistan on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 03:20 (03:20 AM) UTC.

Description
More than 20 houses were completely damaged while fields and orchards spread over hundreds of kanals of land in Ghizer were destroyed by flood after a thunderstorm struck Sosot Nullah of Tehsil Gopis. The bridge connecting Gilgit district to Chitral was also washed away in the flood in the nullah. The Gilgit-Chitral Road was also partially damaged. As the flood of Sosot Nullah entered the Ghizer River, it overflowed to the surrounding areas giving it lake-like look. The residents of the area saved their lives by taking shelter at the mountains, but several houses and standing crops were damaged. People of the area near the nullah and river shifted to the safer places. The poor and hapless villagers were still awaiting the rescue teams and the whole area was presenting a gloomy picture. Hundreds of people on their way to attend the Shandoor Festival had to go back in despair due to closure of the road. Updated: Sunday, 08 July, 2012 at 14:36 UTC
Description
The death toll rose to at least 150 today from severe flooding in southern Russia that turned streets into rivers, swept away bridges, and inundated thousands of homes as many residents were sleeping. President Vladimir Putin flew to the Black Sea region and ordered investigators to determine whether more could have been done to prevent the deaths. Torrential rains dropped up to a foot of water in less than 24 hours, which the state meteorological service said was five times the monthly average. The water rushed into the hard-hit town of Krymsk with such speed and volume early yesterday that residents said they suspected that water had been released from a reservoir in the mountains above. Local officials denied this, saying it was not possible to open the sluices. Federal investigators, however, acknowledged today that water had been released, but insisted it did not cause the flooding. The Interior Ministry said today that 150 bodies had been recovered, 139 of them in Krymsk and nine in Gelendzhik. The majority of the dead were elderly who were unable to escape.

Flash floods in Russia’s Krasnodar region struck unexpectedly as thousands woke up to a nightmare. While they were asleep, their lives and the people they loved were being washed away. Emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors after devastating floods killed over one hundred and forty people in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar. The disaster, caused by torrential rains, swamped thousands of houses. There are warnings the rain will continue throughout Sunday. RT’s Tom Barton has more on what’s going on in the affected areas right now. And RT’s Denis Bolotsky reports on how the events unfolded from Friday night when the disaster hit.

A month’s amount of rain falls in hours/Worst floods in decades hits Russia! (July 7, 2012)

At least 171 people have been killed in a devastating flood in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region. It’s the worst of its kind in nearly a century, and the death toll continues to rise.

Some 479 people, 48 children among them, have sought medical aid following the flood. Almost 3,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster area.

More than 24,000 people have been affected by the disaster. A state of emergency has been declared in the cities of Krymsk, Novorossiysk, and Gelendzhik. In total 159 bodies have been recovered so far in Krymsk, ten in Gelendzhik and two in Novorossiysk.

Deputy Minister of the Interior Aleksandr Gorovoy said that the search for bodies continued as there are still two people unaccounted for. Also, he voiced fears that more people could be missing.

The flood was part of the aftermath of a giant storm that hit Krasnodar, dropping almost half a year’s rainfall on the region over two days. The weather forecast promises more heavy rains and squally wind to hit the region by night.

The most heavily affected areas are along the Russian Black Sea coast, which bore the brunt of the deluge as it rushed out to sea.

A day of mourning will be held across Russia on July 9 to commemorate the victims of the flood.

‘A wall of water’ in Krymsk

Krymsk has been affected worst of all as the deluge engulfed it overnight, tearing through the city and leaving a trail of desolation in its wake. Witnesses reported buildings destroyed and trucks and other vehicles being overturned.

One driver said his truck was literally carried tens of meters by the deluge. In a separate incident, a ten-year-old girl was ripped from her mother and sister’s arms by the force of the current.

“This is not just rain or a downpour, this is a catastrophe. There was a wall of water, it was difficult to breath,” wrote an eyewitness on a social networking site.

People desperately tried to escape the advancing deluge, fleeing to higher ground and taking refuge on the roofs of buildings.

In the city of Gelendzhik, workers at a kindergarten managed to get children onto the second floor of the building just in time before the waters hit. While one woman in Krymsk reportedly spent six hours on top of a gas oven to escape the rising waters.

Five people in Gelendzhik were electrocuted to death after a wire fell into the water. A man trying to cross a puddle next to a store on Kerchenskaya Street was the first to receive fatal injuries. Two women and another man rushed to help him, but were also killed by the electric current. A third man later approached the four bodies, and was himself electrocuted to death, his body carried away by the oncoming flood waters.

Local authorities say a large part of the casualties were pensioners unable to escape from their homes when the floodwaters struck.

Shelter from the storm

The Governor of the Krasnodar region Aleksandr Tkachyov surveyed the damage in the Gelendzhik and Krymsky districts from a helicopter as early as Saturday morning in order to estimate repairs, sending updates on the situation via Twitter.

“The scale of it is spectacular, to be sure, and very tragic. The water came with such force that it tore up the asphalt,” the governor wrote on Saturday.

Locals say that sewage systems are down and phone networks in the region are working intermittently.

Fourteen temporary shelters have been set up in Krymsk to house around 2,000 people, who “are receiving food, drinking water and medicine,” Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said. She added that a special team had been deployed in the area to attend to the needs of the evacuated.

Emergencies Ministry rescue teams and helicopters have been dispatched to the Krasnodar Region in order to join the rescue and repair efforts already underway there. Over 10,000 rescue officers and 140 helicopters are currently working at the scene.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as well as Emergency Minister Vladimir Puchkov and the Minister of Regional Development Oleg Govorun have visited the affected area.

Furthermore, Russia’s Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova arrived on Sunday in the Krasnodar Region. She is assessing the full impact of the tragedy and the situation in the shelters housing evacuees from the flood zone.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal probe into the tragedy on the grounds of negligence.

Children’s summer camps evacuated

Authorities in the Perm region of Russia dispatched their own rescue team to evacuate dozens of children who were at local summer camps as the storms hit.

Vice PM Olga Golodets proposed the evacuation of four children’s summer camps in order to bring the situation under control.

“The children have no contact with the Ministry of Emergencies or the local authorities in Gelendzhik. For two days now they have been without supplies and electricity,” Governor of the Perm Region Viktor Basargin said on Saturday.

“We have decided to take action on the issue of their evacuation,” he continued.

So far, 84 children have returned home. Some 114 more are said to be in an area unaffected by the disaster, so the supervisors of their camp decided the kids could continue their holiday.

There is growing concern over the tourist population in the area. The area is popular with campers and tourists for its proximity to the Black Sea. This year alone 7,130 Russian children went camping in the surrounding territory, Russian Vice-premier Olga Golodetz announced in the wake of the disaster.

However, Governor Tkachyov emphasized that the all the camp grounds in the area appear to be safe:

“Practically all the campgrounds are in normal condition, nothing is threatening the lives of the children.”

The only campground that has suffered as a result of the flooding was the “Azure Shore” campsite, which was without power.

Tkachyov, nevertheless supported Basargin’s decision to evacuate the children.

Today HAZMAT USA State of Alaska, Dutch Harbor Damage level
Details

HAZMAT in USA on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 04:58 (04:58 AM) UTC.

Description
Two workers were hospitalized and at least 120 people were evacuated from a factory fish- processing ship that leaked up to 5,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia in port at Dutch Harbor Saturday afternoon. The two were flown to Anchorage for medical treatment. The ship, the 367-foot-long M/V Excellence, was relocated to a moorage in Wide Bay, about 7.5 miles from the Kloosterboer North Dock in Dutch Harbor, where it leaked. Workers cannot enter the engineering space where the ammonia is leaking because of the danger, said Steven Russel of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Anhydrous ammonia is used as a coolant in the vessel’s refrigeration system. When compressed, the ammonia is a liquid, but upon release it turns into a gas. The gas displaces the oxygen in the body, causing nausea, shortness of breath, irritation to the eyes and headaches. Ammonia is leaking at a fairly low pressure of less than 4 pounds per square inch. Russell said up to 4,000 pounds of the 22,000 pounds of ammonia aboard the vessel has been released. But Russel did not anticipate much more leakage due to the leak’s location in the refrigeration system. Once the leak was detected, nearby areas were cleared and the workers were evacuated. One of the workers flown to Anchorage has been released from the hospital. The Unalaska fire department has been combating ammonia vapors from the vessel using a high-pressure water fog. DEC plans to monitor the vessel until it’s safe for Hazmat teams to board and gather air data. Select members of the crew with Hazmat training are working alongside the Unalaska Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard. The M/V Excellence was built as a factory trawler in 1973 and refitted in 1990 for use as a factory processor.
