Researchers taking a new look at the snow and ice covering Mount Everest and the national park that surrounds it are finding abundant evidence that the world’s tallest peak is shedding its frozen cloak. The scientists have also been studying temperature and precipitation trends in the area and found that the Everest region has been warming while snowfall has been declining since the early 1990s.

Members of the team conducting these studies will present their findings on May 14 at the Meeting of the Americas in Cancun, Mexico – a scientific conference organized and co-sponsored by the American Geophysical Union.

Glaciers in the Mount Everest region have shrunk by 13 percent in the last 50 years and the snowline has shifted upward by 180 meters (590 feet), according to Sudeep Thakuri, who is leading the research as part of his PhD graduate studies at the University of Milan in Italy.

Glaciers smaller than one square kilometer are disappearing the fastest and have experienced a 43 percent decrease in surface area since the 1960s. Because the glaciers are melting faster than they are replenished by ice and snow, they are revealing rocks and debris that were previously hidden deep under the ice.

These debris-covered sections of the glaciers have increased by about 17 percent since the 1960s, according to Thakuri. The ends of the glaciers have also retreated by an average of 400 meters since 1962, his team found.

The researchers suspect that the decline of snow and ice in the Everest region is from human-generated greenhouse gases altering global climate. However, they have not yet established a firm connection between the mountains’ changes and climate change, Thakuri said.

Rome river judged too dirty for tourist cruises

by Staff Writers
Rome (AFP) May 09, 2013

“Tourists and Rome residents were expecting navigation for the year to resume at Easter. But we didn’t open out of respect for them,” said Mauro Pica Villa from “Rome Boats”, the company in charge of all cruises on the river.

“We’re ashamed of the Tiber’s state of abandonment,” he told AFP on Thursday.

The river’s tall stone embankments have become grey with pollution, the river banks are strewn with rubbish and homeless people live under the bridges.

“The last time the river was cleaned up was in 2008! Everyone can see it since trees along the Tiber are covered in plastic bags and other rubbish every time the river overflows,” which happens several times in a year, he said.

Volcano Eruption in Italy on Monday, 29 April, 2013 at 06:04 (06:04 AM) UTC.

Description
Mount Etna burst into life once more at the weekend as it shot lava, ash and smoke hundreds of feet into the air. Residents had been warned about the imminent eruption as grey smoke has been seen rising from the volcano for days. On Saturday, red hot lava was spat into the air as the volcano violently erupted once more. It is the thirteenth time Etna has erupted this year. Such is the scale of the activity that concerned residents have called on the Government to introduce a state of emergency. Experts said the latest activity posed no risk to local residents or towns. Stefano Gresta, president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said it was ‘very spectacular, but not risky’, according to youreporternews.it.

The airport was only briefly closed and the eruption caused very little disruption. The huge burst on Saturday could be seen by miles around and witnessed by residents of Catania and Taormina. Ash was sent flying down Etna’s slopes and smoke rose more than 3,000ft into the air. Locals said the latest eruption is the most ‘intense’ of the year so far. The eruptions ended shortly before midnight on Saturday, although further bursts of activity were recorded yesterday. A series of minor earthquakes, measuring up to 2.55 on the Richter scale were also recorded. Earlier this month, mayors of towns surrounding the volcano called for ‘urgent’ government action. In a joint statement, the politicians said they wanted a state of emergency to be declared. Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest active volcano. After past explosions, authorities in Sicily have been forced to build dams or dig ditches to divert lava away from people’s homes.

The Strategy of Tension

Government’s behind many “terror” bombings

Project Gladio in Italy attempted to use domestic terrorism on a longstanding basis to maintain the political status quo. Seems to be a strategy also discussed in the report from Iron Mountain. The tactics beat down the public disfavor with the present government with fear of a ubiquitous, and nebulous threat so that the same masses ultimately seek protection from the government, and conform to the government’s political order and agenda as a quid pro quo. Sometimes the far right is infiltrated and made a scape goat; other times a leftist patsy is apprehended and held in public display.

Silvio Berlusconi is sentenced to 1 year in prison, that’s already confirmed!.

The ex-premier is accused of violating secrecy laws after making public a police wiretap concerning his political rival in 2005. They were published in Il Giornale, a newspaper run by his brother, who was also sentenced to over two years and three months in prison.

Under Italian law, people over 75 who are sentenced to less than two years don’t have to actually serve their term behind bars. Berlusconi is 76.

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou, who blew the whistle on waterboarding and exposed how CIA torture was policy, was convicted of a classified leak for sharing the name of an officer involved in the rendition program with a reporter. He is set to be sentenced to jail for thirty months on Friday.

Kiriakou appeared on an episode of “Citizen Radio” this morning. Interviewed by the show’s co-host Allison Kilkenny, he revealed that his attorneys have a document showing that he clearly was the victim of a selective prosecution.

“While I confirmed the name of one CIA officer involved in the torture regime,” Kiriakou stated, “There was a second CIA officer who provided the same reporter the names of ten undercover officers as well as information about counterterrorist operations and flight plans for the black flights going to CIA prisons but that CIA officer was not investigated and was not prosecuted.”

The reporter is Matthew Cole, who at the time claimed to be writing a book on a CIA rendition operation in Italy.

After seeing the document, the only thing Kiriakou could conclude was that the second CIA officer did not blow the whistle on torture. He added that he believes the Justice Department made a decision in 2007 to come after him and were very patient in developing a case against him.

Significantly, government prosecutors have accused Kiriakou of “trying to minimize the seriousness of his actions and is falsely claiming to be a whistleblower.” Josh Gerstein of POLITICO reported on a recent court filing, where prosecutors state:

To the extent the defendant falsely denies elements of the offense or relevant conduct in a sentencing allocution, or again seeks to claim the misbegotten title of whistleblower, such a claim should be squarely rejected and considered as a repudiation of his acceptance of responsibility for the criminal conduct he committed.

The filing, signed by US Attorney Neil MacBride, recommended he be sentenced to 30 months and a “supervised release term of three years.” It also sought to show that what Kiriakou did was not the result of some lapse in judgment.

…[T]he defendant’s emails seized during the investigation revealed that Kiriakou disclosed to journalists information about dozens of CIA officers, including numerous covert officers of the National Clandestine Service beyond the one identified in the indictment, as well as others since retired. As the narrowly framed charges reflect, the government was required to “balanc[e] the need for prosecution and the possible damage that a public trial [would] require by way of the disclosure of vital national interest secrets in a public trial.” United States v. Morison, 844 F.2d 1057, 1067 (4th Cir. 1988). For purposes of sentencing, however, it is sufficient to note that for Kiriakou the charged conduct was in no sense aberrational or reflective of an atypical lapse of judgment…

The filing reflects the fact that support for Kiriakou is growing and it is aware that more and more people are referring to him as a whistleblower.

 cat gifts owners grave

A loyal cat has been bringing his owner small gifts everyday in a show of affection. The catch? The cat’s owner has been dead for over a year.

Meet Toldo — a cute, 3-year-old black and white cat living in Montagnana, northern Italy. According to the Corriere Fiorentino, Toldo has been visiting his owner — Iozzelli Renzo, who died on September 22, 2011, aged 71 — every day for the past year and leaving small presents at the grave.

The gifts usually consist of leaves, sticks, twigs, plastic cups or paper towels.

“Even today I went to the cemetery with Toldo. On the way back, someone I know told me the cat has already been there early this morning,” Renzo’s widow, Ada, told the Corriere Fiorentino.

Neighbors have also seen Toldo wandering around the cemetery through the day.

It all started the day of the funeral, when the cat followed the coffin from the house to the cemetery.

The next morning, Ada went to the grave again. “We went to the cemetery with my daughter and found a sprig of acacia on the grave. I immediately thought that it was the cat, but my daughter was convinced that I was just in a very emotional state at that moment,” she told the news source.

That night, however, Renzo’s son returned to the cemetery and found Toldo standing guard at the grave, reported Dreuz.info.

Tornado in Italy on Wednesday, 28 November, 2012 at 15:15 (03:15 PM) UTC.

Description
A powerful tornado on Wednesday struck a giant steel plant in southern Italy at the centre of a major labour dispute, leaving 20 workers slightly injured and one missing, as storms lashed much of the country. The missing worker at the ILVA plant in Taranto is believed to have been operating a crane at the port which was swept out to sea by the wind. “Divers are searching for him,” Lino Ursi, a spokesman for Taranto’s mayor said. A chimneystack was partly destroyed by the strong winds and explosions could be heard inside the closed facility, officials said. A regional emergency official, Fabiano Amati, said the storm had also struck a nearby school and six children had been lightly injured. The ILVA plant, which is the biggest steel mill in western Europe, has been shut since Monday because of a long-running dispute over pollution levels. The company said there had been “heavy structural damage” on the facility.

Violent tornado strikes troubled Italian steel plant

A violent storm hit a troubled ILVA steel plant in southern Italy, injuring around 20 workers, leaving one missing and adding to disruption at the huge site, which is already caught up in a widening pollution scandal.

The tornado rolled off the sea and hit the port city of Taranto, bringing down a chimney stack and damaging a warehouse and lighthouse at the factory’s docks, the company said in a statement.

Video shot by university student Daniele Carbotti with his mobile phone from the balcony of his house shows the progress of the tornado and a bright explosion at its passage.

“Something never seen before in Taranto” Carbotti’s voice is heard in the video as the large tornado advances.

“Jesus Christ. It must have ripped out a light pole …’ Carbotti adds, commenting the explosion.

Divers were searching for a worker who was unaccounted for after a dockside crane collapsed. Three others on the crane were rescued.

Europe’s largest steel plant had already stopped production and faces the threat of permanent closure after magistrates this week seized semi-finished material and steel in a corruption investigation linked to the environmental scandal.
