When the new health care bill takes full effect in 2014, the nation may experience a great shortage of doctors and decisions for treatments could take a minimum of six months for approval or denial. Certain recent reports have been relating that dialysis treatments have already been denied with reasons being given that it is because of the bill. And in other news, doctors are changing their professions. There is a small shortage of physicians. The current Administration has taken $716 billion from the Medicare program to pay for “ObamaCare”. Man-made medicines designed to destroy viruses and bacteria have proven to be a failure. Cases of one disease or another, those which were nearly eradicated years ago, have started resurfacing. And on the story goes. With that in mind, knowing that everything could be turned inside out and upside down, we can take this time to prepare ourselves this very minute.

Beginning with the basics is the best and easiest starting point. Scratches. Scrapes. Gashes. Bruises. They all have one thing in common, bleeding or hemorrhaging.

A styptic is a substance that is applied externally to stop “localized” bleeding or hemorrhaging. “Localized” would be like a razor nicking or cutting the skin but not so deeply that a tissue or rag becomes soaked and/or dripping with blood. Basically, this would be like a minor injury with a normal amount of blood being produced in conjunction with the size of the wound. A “hemorrhage” is when a large quantity of blood, or heavy bleeding from a vessel which carries blood, is produced. This would be like cutting into muscle tissue and bleeding a lot but with application of pressure the flow will begin to slow down and eventually come to a halt, unless the severed tissues are disturbed before they have completely mended back together.

Nature offers many styptic herbs which are useful for stopping bleeding. For example, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) treats cuts and scrapes. Consumers have the option of stocking up on this medicinal herb because many stores carry it in a bottled liquid extract which is generally used straight from the bottle. Those with salve or ointment know-how may decide to mix one part extract into nine parts lard, shortening, coconut oil or another carrier oil for application to skin.

Bistort (Polygonum bistorta) rootstock applied directly on the skin in powdered form is a very good remedy for wounds because it has come to be known as powerful for it’s ability to halt bleeding.

Omega-3 fats again vindicated in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and chronic illnesses

omega-3

by: John Phillip

(NaturalNews)  Reports have been circulated that are designed to debunk the thousands of scientific research studies that show how the long-chain fats dramatically lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and dying from a heart attack.

Monster drug giants benefit by pushing their ineffective prescription medications that at best, mask symptoms of disease and do little to treat those vascular conditions that respond positively to Omega-3 fat enriched foods and fish oil capsules. A study team from the prestigious Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University has published the result of their work in the Journal of Lipid Research that demonstrates the critical nature of Omega-3 fats to human health.

The scientists found that omega-3 fatty acids (which include EPA, DHA and ALA), both from fish and supplements, do indeed help prevent heart disease and other conditions, despite widely publicized results with conflicting results. Lead study author, Dr. Donald Jump commented “After decades of studying omega-3 fatty acids, it’s clear that they have value in primary prevention of heart disease.”

Omega-3 fats benefit heart health, lower cancer risk and improve cognitive function

The authors cited studies performed in the early 1970s on native Inuit’s in Greenland who ate large amounts of fish and were found to have unusually low levels of cardiovascular disease. At the same time, deaths from heart disease and sudden cardiac mortality were peaking in many western cultures, where refined and processed convenience foods that were stripped of nutrients and fats in their natural form were replacing traditional home cooked meals.

The researchers determined that many studies in the past designed to determine how Omega-3 fats impact heart health have been performed using individuals with existing or advanced disease and taking one or more prescription medications that skew the effectiveness of the DHA and EPA components. By singling out studies on healthy individuals without heart ailments, the researchers were able to determine that Omega-3 fats accumulate preferentially in endothelial tissues to suppress inflammation and improve arterial elasticity, thus significantly lowering the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

In addition to their proven benefit in preventing vascular disorders, the researchers concluded that Omega-3 fatty acids “have been shown to improve visual acuity and cognitive function and reduce dementia; reduce inflammation and perhaps some types of cancer, such as colon cancer and reduce total mortality.” They also found that plant-derived sources (such as walnuts, flax and chia seeds) have less benefit than those from cold-water fish, because of differences in how the human body processes these nutrients. Nutrition experts advise eating fatty fish two or three times a week or supplementing with a molecularly distilled fish oil to slash the risks associated with cardiovascular disease.

Beans, Beans, the Magical Fruit..

beans
by: Hesh Goldstein
(NaturalNews) The more you eat, the lower your risk of certain cancers.

Beans have more servings of fiber than any other vegetable. One single serving will give you 20 percent of your daily-recommended fiber.

Researchers in Japan did a seven-year study. They studied more than 43,000 people between the ages of 40 and 79 that had high cancer rates and ate little fiber. The more fiber they got from beans, the lower the risk of colon cancer, especially in men, became. It was the bean fiber that impacted the colon cancer statistics more than any other source of fiber.

Other research indicates that the fiber in beans like garbanzo’s actually keep your body from absorbing carcinogens. When you take in fewer carcinogens, the less damage is done to your cells, tissues, and other organs. Less damage equates to lower cancer risk in the long run. It’s too bad that the same cannot be said for ingesting flesh foods.

Beans contain phytochemicals, which naturally fight cancer and free radicals, which ruin your cells and tissues through oxidation. The phytochemicals neutralize the free radicals before they do damage.

Greek researchers tested extracts from 11 different legumes (beans are legumes) and found that all of them neutralized free radicals. Not only that, but most of them also protected DNA from oxidative damage, which more or less explains the key to beans’ anti-cancer potential.

What about beans helping women thwart breast cancer? In a study of 90,000 young nurses, the ones who ate beans or lentils at least twice a week were less likely to develop breast cancer.

The experts assumed that the flavonols, again phytochemicals, block the free radicals, prevent oxidative damage to the cells, and encourage cancerous cells to die. All you have to do is to work at least two servings of beans and lentils into your weekly diet.

We all know there’s quite a fad about cutting carbs. If you are concerned, at all, about colon cancer, fagetaboutit.

The carbs in beans are a unique kind that the body cannot digest. As such, they wind up fermenting in your colon, thanks to the bacteria living in your gut. The fermentation produces a compound called butyrate that basically squashes inflammation and the abnormal cell growth that can lead to cancer. In addition, the indigestible carbs help give beans a low glycymic index, meaning a low risk of colon cancer. This is the super benefit of eating low glycymic index foods.

Theory leads to subjectivity. The researchers decided to put their theories to work. They took people that previously had colon polyps removed, changed their diets to include more cooked, dry beans, and after four years, those that ate the most beans were 65 percent less likely to see their polyps return.
All beans work, be it baked, pinto, kidney, navy, white, black, garbanzo, human (only kidding), or lima – all cut colon cancer risk. The more legumes that men eat the less likely they are to get prostate cancer. Three major studies found that eating lots of legumes, including beans, lentils, and split peas, dropped prostate cancer risk between 29 and 38 percent. If flesh foods are eliminated altogether, those percentages climb incredibly.

Another weapon against cancer is the folate found in B vitamins, which beans are a great source of. Eating high-folate foods reduces the risk of pancreatic and colon cancer. In addition, the folate helps to build and repair DNA. Too little leads to DNA damage and supplements will not provide the protection that folate-rich foods do.

But wait, there’s more. Bulking up with beans can help with type-2 diabetes in two ways:

1- As mentioned earlier, legumes have a lower glycemic index (GI). The GI measures how fast your blood sugar rises after eating a food. High GI foods make your blood sugar rise faster, whereas low-GI foods, like beans, cause a slower, more gradual rise. There are over 35 studies showing that diets filled with high-GI foods nearly double the risk of getting type-2 diabetes and make you 25 percent more likely to develop heart disease. High-GI foods create a spike in your blood sugar, causing your pancreas to release more insulin. So, eating high-GI foods creates a demand on your pancreas to produce more insulin. Eventually, the pancreas burns out and stops making insulin. This leads to diabetes.

2- Beans could be the single best food for weight loss. If you eat more beans despite eating more calories, you will weigh less than someone who does not eat beans and eats lower calories as well. Go figga?

If you are worried about developing type-2 diabetes, bear in mind that obesity is a major risk factor for type-2 diabetes. Not only do beans keep you slimmer, but you will get more fiber, more potassium, and you’ll eat less fat and added sugar. It’s a winning combination all across the nation.

But wait, there’s even more: high cholesterol, blood clots, insulin resistance, and oxidation all have a hand in heart problems. As an alternative to drugs and supplements, beans pit pennies against dollars.

If you took one third of a cup of black beans daily, you could cut your risk of a heart attack by 40 percent. If you ate that same one third of a cup four times a week, instead of one or none, you would be twenty two percent less likely to get heart disease.

Why would that be? Because the complex carbohydrates in beans lower the glycemic load in the meals. Then their unique combination of magnesium, copper, fiber, and alpha-linoleic acid will boost your insulin sensitivity, help prevent blood clots, and drop your risk of a heart attack. In addition, beans are an excellent source of protein, which helps to manage your weight.

If you have high cholesterol and want to take a walk on the wild side, eating half a cup of beans daily will improve your cholesterol numbers. And, if you are healthy, and you do likewise, you should experience at least a 10 percent drop in your cholesterol as well.

Remember the talk about phenols? These same phenols may also prevent hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) because the flavonoids in beans are natural antioxidants. As such, they work against the free radicals before they can attack cholesterol and oxidize it. That’s important because oxidized LDL cholesterol contributes to atherosclerosis. The best beans for this are black, red kidney, pinto and lentils.

Now for a treat: Brownies! Believe it or not, brownies can actually be healthy. Replace up to half the shortening with pureed cannelloni beans. That will cut away 40 percent of the fat, give you fewer calories, and taste just as good. A study was done that did this and it found that the beans did not noticeably change the yumminess, the texture, color, or tenderness of the brownies. And doing this will help you battle heart disease and type-2 diabetes while still enjoying a treat, plus save you money. Canned white beans cost 80 percent less than butter and slightly less than margarine, ounce for ounce and make a great substitute if no cannelloni’s are available. And if you want even less fat and cholesterol, use egg replacer, which also does not alter the taste

Should butter be banned?

by: Ben Hirshberg
butter

(NaturalNews) Butter has gotten a bad reputation in the health world for being high in saturated fat, which supposedly causes heart disease. Butter consumption in the United States has plummeted as a result of health experts’ butter condemnation. This is unfortunate, as butter is a bona fide health food due to its high vitamin content, butyrate levels, and abundant conjugated linoleic acid.

The doctor who wants to ban butter

Not everyone believes that butter is a health food though. Dr. Shyam Kolvekar is so adamantly against butter consumption that he believes the food should be banned. Dr. Kolvekar is quoted as saying, “By banning butter and replacing it with a healthy spread the average daily fat intake would be reduced by eight grams. People should also avoid any foods that are solid at room temperature like cheese and red meat.”

Dr. Kolvekar is misguided on multiple fronts, starting with the assertion that foods that are solid at room temperature are unhealthy. By this logic locally grown, organic broccoli would be unhealthy. Does he intend for us to drink all of our food?

Kolvekar is also misinformed about fat being harmful. Most health experts have realized that not all fats are unhealthy, but the majority still vilifies saturated fat as a nasty, disease causing nutrient.

Saturated fat is looked down upon mainly because of the work of Ancel Keys, a doctor who published influential fat-loathing work starting in the 1950s. Keys found correlations between fat and animal fat intake and heart disease in several countries and became famous for pointing those correlations out. However, correlations between fat and animal fat intake and heart disease did not exist in several other countries using data that was available when Keys vilified the macronutrient.

Besides his false belief that solid foods and saturated can be healthy, Dr. Kolvekar also fails to understand that butter actually has a lot to offer from a nutritional standpoint.

Butter’s many health benefits

Butter contains significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K2 as well as butyrate and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The importance of sufficient vitamin levels are well stated and accepted in mainstream health circles, but the importance of butyrate and CLA are not as well known.

In various studies, butyrate has been shown to protect against mental illness, improve body composition and increase energy expenditure, decrease intestinal leakage, and reduce inflammation. CLA is important too, being associated with increased heart health, reduced tumor growth, decreased stomach fat, and increased fat loss in overweight subjects.

Not all butter is equally beneficial though; grass-fed butter contains superior health benefits. This is because grass-fed butter has higher vitamin and antioxidant levels, higher CLA levels, and a higher omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio.

Dr. Kolvekar advises against eating butter despite its extensive health benefits. Don’t be fooled, butter should not be banned.

Several studies have shown garlic to havenatural anti-cancer properties.

Garlic is also known to be antibacterial and antimicrobial. Some even call it
“Russian penicillin” because it is so effective in treating wounds and skin
disorders.

And if that weren’t enough, studies show that garlic may lower blood pressure and
overall blood cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol.

Fresh-Cut Garlic Reduces Risk of Heart Disease

Uploaded by on Aug 14, 2009

Fresh cut garlic may ward off heart disease. Recent studies show that raw crushed garlic generates hydrogen sulfide. When eaten, this chemical can benefit users by relaxing blood vessels and allowing more blood to pass thru the heart. Cleveland Clinic registered dietician Elizabeth Penniman explains how raw, fresh cut garlic’s cardioprotective and antioxidant properties surpasses that of processed or cooked garlic.

Why You Must Make Garlic a Daily Super Food

(NaturalNews) Garlic (Allium sativum) has the broadest spectrum of any antimicrobial substances we know of. “It’s antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiprotozoan and antiviral,” asserted Paul Bergner, Director of The North American Institute of Herbal Medicine and author of The Healing Power of Garlic and several other herbal medicine books. This along with even more health benefits have been confirmed by other researchers, many from mainstream medicine.

Garlic’s Healing Properties

Tests have found raw garlic more powerful than even penicillin and tetracycline. This is without destroying the digestive intestinal flora, which pharmaceutical antibiotics invariably do. It’s also effective for TB and even Candida. Also, unlike heavy pharmaceutical antibiotic use, garlic does not diminish the immune system. It actually enhances the immune system.

Allicin, the active ingredient released when garlic is crushed, stimulates the immune system. Dr. Abdullah and his colleagues at the Akbar Clinic and Research Center in Panama City, Florida, found raw garlic dramatically increased the powers of the immune system’s natural killer cells. Abdullah believes the immune boosting power of garlic could even be used to help AIDS patients.

Garlic prevents cancer and contributes toward tumor shrinkage, especially stomach, colon, and breast and prostate cancers. The Russians have known this for decades. More recently, this has been formally recognized by Dr. John Pinto, Ph.D of the normally anti-alternative natural cancer remedy Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute.

In the 1970s, Robert I. Lin, president of Nutritional International in Irvine California,
successfully used garlic to detox lead from children. That’s not a well know attribute of garlic, and it’s another reason everyone should use garlic often in our heavily toxic heavy metal environment.

Garlic has been used successfully for promoting cardiovascular health even among those who are having arterial or heart problems. Garlic dilates blood vessels to lower blood pressure, removes triglycerides, dissolves internal clots, and prevents oxidation of important lipids that lead to cellular destruction. All without side effects, of course.

Dr Irwin Ziment, a Los Angeles pulmonary specialist, regularly prescribes garlic as a decongestant and expectorant for common colds and as a mucus regulator for chronic bronchitis. University of New Mexico research has discovered that garlic destroys meningitis in-vitro (petri dish/test tube).

How to Include Garlic as a Super Food

Even though several studies have discovered even light use of raw and cooked garlic beneficial over non-garlic consumption, it’s a good idea to consume mostly raw garlic daily to realize maximum benefits. The garlic must be freshly pressed and consumed after ten minutes and within one-half hour to forty-five minutes to absorb the allicin, which is released only when garlic is pressed, chewed, or juiced.

If you have a slow speed masticating auger juicer, three or four cloves juiced and mixed with purified water is an easy way to get a strong allicin dose. High speed juicers destroy enzymes. Nebulizing a small amount of freshly juiced and filtered garlic mixed with distilled water is great for regulating mucous in the lungs for chronic bronchitis and COPD sufferers.

Chewing a clove or two a day works just as well. You can disguise its pungent flavor by placing the cloves in food, even an organic peanut butter sandwich. Chewing fresh cilantro and parsley are common odor removing methods, with cilantro adding its heavy metal chelation to garlic’s chelation process.

Researchers tend to agree that most garlic supplements don’t match the allicin produced by freshly crushed raw garlic. Fresh garlic should be used, and it’s recommended that you know the garlic source’s soil quality or grow your own. Garlic’s low cost and high health benefits should override odor and taste considerations.

Blood group ‘linked to heart disease’

By Anna-Marie Lever Health reporter, BBC News

Blood group graphic It is not known why those with blood group AB are most at risk of heart disease

People from blood groups A, B and AB are more at risk of heart disease than those with the more common blood type O, a study suggests.

Those with the rarest blood group, AB, are the most vulnerable – they are 23% more likely to suffer from heart disease than those with blood group O.

The researchers do not know why this is, but are now looking at how blood groups respond to improved lifestyle.

The findings are published in an American Heart Association Journal.

The study also found that for individuals with blood group B the risk of heart disease increased by 11%, and for blood type A, by 5%.

Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play”

Prof Lu Qi Harvard School of Public Health

Lead author Prof Lu Qi, from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, said: “While people cannot change their blood type, our findings may help physicians better understand who is at risk of developing heart disease.

“It’s good to know your blood type the same way you should know your cholesterol or blood pressure numbers.

Reduce the risk

“If you know you’re at higher risk, you can reduce the risk by adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as eating right, exercising and not smoking.”

The British Heart Foundation stressed it is important that we all look after ourselves to reduce the risk.

Doireann Maddock, a senior cardiac nurse from the charity said: “Nobody can influence what type of blood they are born with but a healthy lifestyle is something everybody can have an influence over.

“Eating healthily, getting active and stopping smoking are the types of things you should be worrying about, not your blood type.

“While these findings are certainly interesting we’ll need more research to draw any firm conclusions about blood type and its role in heart disease risk.”

The study did not look at why different blood types appear to have different risks of heart disease.

Prof Qi said: “Blood type is very complicated, so there could be multiple mechanisms at play.”

However, blood group AB has been linked to inflammation, which plays an important role in artery damage.

There is also evidence that blood group A is associated with higher levels of the ‘bad’ type of cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), a waxy substance that can clog arteries.

Ethnic uncertainty

While those with blood group O may benefit from increased levels of a chemical which helps blood flow and clotting.

The findings are based on two large US analytical studies – 62,073 women from the Nurses’ Health Study and 27,428 adults from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. They were between the ages of 30 and 75 and followed for 20 years.

As this study group was predominantly Caucasian, the researchers say it is not clear if their findings would be reflected in other ethnic groups.

The work is published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association journal.

The team is now looking at whether people with different blood groups respond differently to changes in lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, cholesterol intake.

London, (ANI): Chillies battle the bulge in three ways by burning fat, suppressing hunger pangs, and boosting overall calorie-burning rates, it has been revealed.

Tests by food scientist Stephen Whiting, who is based at Manchester Metropolitan University, proved that chillies “key component” – the chemical capsaicin that gives them heat, triggers an adrenalin rush.

This orders the brain specifically to burn fat cells, and tests found fat around the belly was burned most rapidly.

Midriff fat is the most dangerous, as it increases the risk of heart disease.

Whiting found chillies also helped to suppress appetite, plus they speeded up the body’s overall metabolism, the rate at which a person burns off calories.

“If you eat chillies consistently for a good period of time, it will help you lose weight,” the Sun quoted Whiting as saying. (ANI)

euronews science : Encouraging progress in Parkinson’s therapy

Published on Apr 19, 2012 by

http://www.euronews.com/ British scientists claim tests for a new treatment for Parkinson’s disease have proved encouraging.
The therapy introduces three genes into the brain to boost levels of a chemical that sufferers lack.
Doctors in Cambridge have noticed a marked change in at least one patient in the trials.

Sheila Roy has suffered for 17 years. She said:
“People would take knives off me in the kitchen because I was everywhere with a knife. My vocal chords would suddenly shut so I can’t breathe. If I hit a wall of people then I can’t function, I just stop, but I’m feeling I can see a glimmer of the person I used to be now, which is really exciting.”

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive disorder affecting movement caused by a degeneration in the brain cells that produce dopamine.

The new treatment delivers genes into the brain converting cells into a kind of replacement dopamine factory helping to control a patient’s movements.

Trials in just a handful of patients have been conducted at Cambridge University.

Dr. Philip Buttery, a neurologist at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences of the Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair said: “It seems to be having an overall beneficial effect on smoothing out people’s days, probably allowing a slight dose reduction in medication and, for some patients a better sleep pattern, a better quality of life overall.”

The idea is that a single injection of gene therapy reduces the need for patients to consume large amounts of drugs. Researchers are still monitoring patients for side effects. Doctors stress this is not a cure, but could nevertheless enable Parkinson’s sufferers to reclaim their lives.

Sheila Roy added: “If you can treat the symptoms and control in some way the deterioration in what you can do, it has to be better for you and it is.”

The researchers say Parkinson’s already affects 4.1 million people worldwide and that figure is expected to more than double by 2030.

No proof bad gums cause heart trouble, experts say

By MyHealthNewsDaily

Preventing heart disease is not as easy as brushing your teeth.

While numerous studies have linked gum disease with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, there is no proof that bad gums actually cause heart disease or strokes, an American Heart Association committee said after reviewing 500 journal articles and studies.

Moreover, claims that dental treatment may prevent heart attack or stroke are unwarranted, the committee of doctors, dentists and infectious-disease researchers said in a statement.

“The message sent out by some in health care professions – that heart attack and stroke are directly linked to gum disease – can distort the facts, alarm patients and perhaps shift the focus of prevention away from well-known risk factors for these diseases,” said committee member Dr. Peter Lockhart, a professor of oral medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Do Carrots Naturally Improve Your Dog’s Vision?

Can Eating Carrots Improve Eyesight?

By Jennifer Kvamme, DVM

We’ve all heard the saying that eating carrots can help improve vision. But does this apply to our dogs as well? While there is some hint of truth in the concept, eating bushels of carrots will not give your dog (or you) super vision during the day (or night).

Carrots are indeed a nutrient-rich source for a variety of vitamins and minerals, including beta-carotene, a pigment that gives carrots and other vegetables their signature orange (or sometimes yellow or red) color. It is the beginning form of vitamin A (called retinal) that is necessary to maintain good vision — especially in dim light.

Eye Problems in Dogs … Don’t Be Fooled

By T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM

Almost daily every animal hospital receives a call about canine eye problems; and the diversity of concern expressed by the dog’s caretaker runs a wide spectrum.

There are times when veterinarians will check a frantic and anxious client’s dog only to discover an insignificant soreness in the dog’s supporting tissues around the eye (called conjunctiva). The very next “eye case” may be an advanced corneal ulcer that has allowed internal contents of the eye to actually protrude through the corneal surface! And that client might calmly state, “It’s been like that for two weeks but we though it would clear up.”

Fortunately in most veterinary practices the entire staff has been directed to prioritize all calls that express concern about a potential ocular difficulty. The reason for expediting the evaluation of any case relating to eye difficulties is that there is no way for verbal description to convey the true nature or severity of the problem. Seemingly innocent conditions can fool you … and result in an ocular emergency rather rapidly. These cases simply must be seen right away.

Call to action – Join the demand to investigate Michigan DNR director Rodney Stokes over forced shooting of baby piglets in cold blood

By Mike Adams, April 17 2012
(NaturalNews) There is nothing more pathetic, ugly and insidious than a tyrannical government thug who uses his power to destroy the lives of law-abiding citizens. Today, we have witnessed the outrageous acts carried out by jack-booted scumbags in Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who masterminded armed raids on two ranches in that state, all with the intention of shooting and killing traditional livestock and arresting ranchers as felons. This is part of Michigan’s new “Invasive Species…

U.S. suggests no emissions limits to protect polar bears

Polar bears in Alaska

Polar bears in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Susanne Miller / U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service / April 17, 2012)

By Kim MurphyApril 17, 2012, 5:58 p.m.

SEATTLE — Polar bears are skating on thin ice in Alaska these days: Warming temperatures have resulted in dramatic shrinkage of sea ice, leaving the bears with fewer ice floes on which to rest and hunt seals.

But at least for the moment, the Endangered Species Act won’t be used to control the greenhouse gas emissions that conservationists say are contributing to climate change and posing one of the biggest threats to the bears’ survival.

The Obama administration on Tuesday released a proposed rule that — like an earlier version put forward under President  George W. Bush — exempts operations outside the bears’ normal territory from restrictions on activities. That could include new coal-fired power plants or big factories with mercury emissions, which might harm bears thousands of miles away in the Arctic seas.

Stress Awareness Day: 10 Health Benefits Of Relaxation

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 04/16/2012 8:02 am Updated: 04/16/2012 8:02 am

You may have heard that a little bit of stress is actually good for you. In the just-right amount, that adrenaline rush can power you through a long day at work, boost your workouts and more.

But while it feels good to conquer the day, in the end, it just simply feels better — and is more beneficial to your health — to relax.

That’s of particular importance during the month of April, designated now for 20 years as Stress Awareness Month. April 16th, conveniently the day after one of the most stressful days of the year — tax day — is singled out as National Stress Awareness Day.

Why devote an entire month to stress when there are so many other health concerns plaguing our country? Some would argue that stress is our biggest health concern, given that it has been linked to so many other complications, from heart problems to dementia. Recently, CBS reported on a small study that examined the role of stress in seizures — and found that people are often misdiagnosed with epilepsy, when learning helpful relaxation and coping techniques may be a better solution.

Nuts Linked With Lower Diabetes, Heart Disease Risks: Study

Nuts Diabetes

People who choose nuts as their snack of choice are doing their health a benefit, new research suggests.

A recent study shows that people who regularly eat tree nuts — including almonds, macadamias, pistachios, walnuts and cashews — also have lower risks for Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease.

The researchers from Louisiana State University Agricultural Center found that nut consumption is linked with lower levels of an inflammation marker called C-reactive protein (which is associated with heart disease and other chronic conditions) and higher levels of the “good” kind of cholesterol.

In addition, people who regularly ate the tree nuts had lower body mass indexes (BMI, a ratio of height to weight) than people who didn’t regularly eat nuts, the study said.

It should be noted that the study was funded by the nonprofit International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation. It appeared recently in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Find out what your anger style says about you — and how you can find healthier ways to express your emotions.

Ticked off. Fed up. Enraged. Call it what you will, but we’ve all been there. Anger is part of being human, says Norman Rosenthal, MD, professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School. “Problems start when you bottle it up, react now and think later, or feel that a destructive response is justified just because you’re furious,” he says.

In fact, both flying off the handle and wallowing can take a toll on your health, increasing pain perception, depression, and your risk of heart disease. But a healthier response can soothe stress, lower your risk of heart problems and depression, and improve your relationships. If that all sounds too good to be true, get this: Experts say we can all learn to handle our anger more effectively. Here, discover the tempo of your temper, and find yourself a better rhythm.

Anxiety and Compulsive Disorders in Cats

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Cats

This is a behavioral disorder where a cat will engage in repetitive, exaggerated behaviors that are seemingly without purpose. For example, grooming to the extent that fur is rubbed off; compulsive pacing; repetitive vocalizations; and eating, sucking, or chewing on fabric. If it continues over a long period of time, it may become fixed behavior, no longer requiring the situation or environmental trigger that started the behavior in the first place. The behaviors may reinforce themselves due to the release of pain-relieving chemicals in the brain. The behavior may become a mechanism for coping when the cat is confronted with conditions that conflict with its needs, and owners may be unintentionally reinforcing the behavior by giving the cat attention or food when it behaves compulsively.

Age and gender do not seem to be factors in compulsive behavior. Some breeds or family lines may be predisposed to behavioral compulsions, with Siamese and other Asian breeds overrepresented as commonly exhibiting repetitive meowing and fabric-chewing behavior.

Dangerous Games Your Kids Should Avoid

Risks of the ‘cinnamon challenge’ and other games can include choking, lung collapse, and even death

A spoonful of sugar may help the medicine go down, but a spoonful of cinnamon… that’s an entirely different story.

It sounds like something you’d see on the television show, Iron Chef, only the seemingly innocent “cinnamon challenge” poses an alarming number of risks for kids and teens who take it on. (The goal: to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without washing it down with water.) Over the past few months, emergency rooms and poison control centers across the country have been flooded with calls from panicked parents and concerned school nurses about this prevalent trend….

More Than 1 in 5 Children Could be Obese by 2020

Without reducing consumption, more than one in five children will be obese by 2020

TUESDAY, April 10 (HealthDay News) — American youngsters have a long way to go to reach new goals for a lower childhood obesity rate, a new study shows.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has set a goal of reducing the childhood obesity rate to 14.6 percent by 2020, and to do so children aged 2 to 19 would need to eliminate an average of 64 calories a day.

Without this reduction in calorie intake, the average child or teen would be nearly 4 pounds heavier in 2020 than a child of the same age in 2007. In addition, more than 20 percent of youth would be obese, up from 16.9 percent currently.

The last time the childhood obesity rate in the United States was 14.6 percent was in 2002.

“Sixty-four calories may not sound like much individually, but it’s quite a consequential number at the population level, and children at greatest risk for obesity face an even larger barrier,” study author Dr. Y. Claire Wang, an assistant professor of health policy and management at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City, said in a university news release…..

Mystery sapovirus strikes nursing homes, new tests reveal

Dr. Charles Humphrey, CDC

Sapovirus, previously regarded as rare, is showing up more often as the nasty culprit between outbreaks gastrointestinal illness in nursing homes.

By JoNel Aleccia

For sheer misery, few germs can cause the chaos of norovirus in a nursing home.  The gut bug can spread rapidly through food, on surfaces or person-to-person, afflicting victims with violent diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain.

About 20 million people suffer from acute norovirus infections in the U.S. each year, health officials say, but new research suggests that the nasty germ has an equally cruddy but little-known cousin: sapovirus.

Health researchers in Oregon and Minnesota have discovered that once-rare sapovirus may be more common than thought and, worse, on the rise, particularly in nursing homes and long-term care centers….

Out-of-whack sleep habits can cause diabetes

 By Robert Bazell
Chief Science and Medical Correspondent
NBC News

How hard is shift work on a worker’s body?

Research out Wednesday from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston demonstrates very precisely the way fighting the body’s natural sleep patterns can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

More than 21 million Americans are “shift workers,” according to U.S. Census figures. That is, they labor during the hours that most of us set aside for rest or sleep, either all or part of the time. That number is increasing 3 percent a year because of the nature of our service economy and the need for ever more people to take whatever work they can.

The sleep research team at Brigham and Women’s, under the direction of Dr. Charles Czeisler, has spent decades documenting how shift work can lead to increased obesity, heart disease, diabetes and many other health problems. In this latest research in their sleep lab they show how one mechanism creates the risk….

The 5 best natural antibiotics and anti-virals that destroy superbugs and just about everything else

By JB Bardot,

The anti-cancer medicine in broccoli (DIM nutrients) isn’t released until you chew them to combine two phytochemicals

By Mike Adams,
(NaturalNews) Broccoli and related vegetables such as cabbage and Brussels sprouts naturally contain a chemical known as glucobrassicin. When these vegetables are crushed by chewing, a chemical reaction transforms glucobrassicin into indole-3-carbinol (I3C). In laboratory studies, I3C has been found to have tumor-suppressing effects, which may partially explain broccoli’s cancer-fighting properties. But the story doesn’t end there: When broccoli is digested, two molecules of I3C combine to form…

Breathing Difficulties in Dogs

Dyspnea, Tachypnea and Panting in Dogs

Troubled or labored breathing is medically referred to as dyspnea, and excessively rapid breathing is medically referred to as tachypnea (also, polypnea). The respiratory system has many parts, including the nose, throat (pharynx and larynx), windpipe, and lungs. Air comes in through the nose and is then carried down into the lungs, through a process referred to as inspiration. In the lungs, the oxygen is transferred to the red blood cells. The red blood cells then carry the oxygen to other organs in the body. This is all part of the physical process of a healthy body.

While oxygen is being transferred to the red blood cells, carbon dioxide is transferred from the red blood cells into the lungs. It is then carried out through the nose through a process referred to as expiration. This cyclic motion of breathing is controlled by the respiratory center in the brain and nerves in the chest. Diseases that affect the respiratory system, or the respiratory center in the brain, can bring about breathing difficulties. Troubled or labored breathing is medically referred to as dyspnea, and excessively rapid breathing is medically referred to as tachypnea (also, polypnea).

Breathing difficulties can affect dogs of any breed or age, and the problem can quickly become life threatening. If your dog is having problems with breathing it should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible…..

Common Fleas that Affect Dogs and Cats

Siphonaptera Species that Affect Dogs and Cats

By Jennifer Kvamme, DVM

You are probably aware of the fact that fleas are the most common (and annoying) type of pest, responsible for the discomfort of our dogs and cats (and us). But did you know that there are over 2,000 species of fleas that exist around the world, and that there are more than 300 of these varieties that live in North America alone?

These small, wingless, blood-sucking insects belong to the order Siphonaptera, so named because of their siphon-like mouthparts. All variations of flea species tend to live in their own groups, and do not mix or breed outside of their species.

The different species all have a particular kind of host animal that they prefer to feed from over all others. However, while they may prefer a dog to a cat, most fleas will take blood from any animal that’s available (even a human) if they can’t find their preferred meal. Here we will discuss some of the most common flea species that you may find feeding from your pet.
