This is not one of those posts that is going to beat you up for doing a crummy job exercising, eating better and all the other things you’re failing to do to ward off death.

Instead, this post is here to say that if you improve one thing just one teeny bit, it’s going to lower your risk of having a . So pick something, and stick to it.

Stroke, which happens when a blood vessel bursts or is blocked in the brain, is a leading cause of death and disability.

Scientists looked at seven factors known to affect stroke risk: cigarette smoking, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, physical activity and diet.

Most Americans aren’t doing so well on these. And most of us, knowing we’re supposed to be doing better on them all, just sigh and reach for the remote.

So the scientists dug into a large study that tracked 30,239 people to see how much improvement it takes to prevent stroke. The people were all over age 45 at the start, and the study lasted from 2003 to 2007.

The good news is it doesn’t take much to make a difference. Each risk factor for stroke was scored from 0 to 2, with 0 being crummy, 1 kind of OK, and 2 terrific. Even a one-point improvement in the total score across all seven factors significantly reduced stroke risk. Each improvement of a point on the 14-point scale meant an 8 percent reduction in stroke.

SB 303 empowers doctors to place “Do Not Resuscitate” orders in the files of sickly children and the elderly without their consent. No one, not even the patient or a member of his family can remove this death sentence. No one, that is, except a panel of doctors.

View PDF of State Bill 303 here.

We spoke to Susan King, the House author of SB 303, who said that hospitals have better judgment than parents as to whether their child should continue to receive life-support treatment. This bill takes away the parents’ authority to make important healthcare decisions for their child and gives that authority to a doctor.

SB 303 grants doctors complete immunity from lawsuits from DNRs. Legal liability for DNR orders would hold the doctor responsible for their actions. Removing liability removes accountability.

Doesn’t the bill require notification before a DNR order is placed?

Doctors must give notification of a DNR order unless the patient’s death is considered “imminent,” but notification is not consent. Even if the doctor notifies the parent of the DNR, the parent can do NOTHING.Can the hospital still remove artificially administered food and water?
Yes. SB 303
allows doctors to remove the artificially administered nutrition and hydration from a sick patient if the treatments: [Section 166.046(e)]

  1. Hasten the patient’s death,
  2. “Exacerbate other major medical problems not outweighed by the benefit of the provision of the treatment,”
  3. “Result in substantial irremediable physical pain or discomfort not outweighed by the benefit of the provision of the treatment,” or
  4. Are “Be medically ineffective in prolonging the patient’s life.”

Only the child’s family should have the authority to decide whether to withdraw the life-sustaining nutrition.

Are there beneficial aspects to the bill?

Rumor: New ‘sex superbug’ found in Hawaii

The Associated Press, which first reported the story about the “sex superbug,” has since withdrawn its story.

FALSE

AP first reported on apparent ‘sex superbug,’ but has since withdrawn story

The rumor began on May 1, when The Associated Press printed a tiny note from Honolulu. State health officials had reportedly confirmed two cases of H041, a drug-resistant gonorrhea. As the AP reported, the “superbug” had first been discovered in Japan in 2011. Others quickly pounced on the story. AP’s competitor UPI trotted out a naturopathic physician to give them the “this might be a lot worse than AIDS” scare quote. And British tabloid The Sun called the bug a “global killer” even though, as it later pointed out, it hadn’t actually killed anyone yet.

But AP then published this story, withdrawing the previous story about the “sex superbug,” saying “The Hawaii State Department of Health says the two cases are a different strain of the disease, and no cases of the new strain have been confirmed.” Had H041 actually been found on the island, it would have been as big a deal as the AP and others said it was. As NBC News points out, that particular strain of gonorrhea is resistant to ceftriaxone, “the last-resort treatment for the sexually transmitted infection.”

But it wasn’t H041. The two cases in Hawaii, as the AP later corrected and as NBC discovered, were actually a different strain, H11S8, that’s resistant to a different antibiotic. As of now, H041 hasn’t been seen since 2009, when it was revealed that a Japanese sex worker was infected.

Sex Superbug, Antibiotic-Resistant

Gonorrhea, Is Not ‘Worse Than AIDS,’ Experts Say

Gonorrhea Superbug

Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is a serious public health issue, but comparing the illness to AIDS, as a recent article did, is misleading, experts say.

A recent CNBC article with the headline “Sex Superbug Could Be ‘Worse Than AIDS’” quoted Alan Christianson, a naturopathic doctor, as saying that an antibiotic-resistant strain of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea “might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly.”

However, some experts called the comparison hyperbolic.

“I disagree with the general comparison,” said Dr. Bruce Hirsch, an attending physician in infectious diseases at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.

“The rate of complications from gonorrhea in terms of systemic problems is so much lower than the rate of complications from untreated AIDS infection,” Hirsch said.

The CNBC article says that this particular strain of gonorrhea “might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days.” But Hirsch said that the rate of life-threatening complications, such as sepsis, from gonorrhea, is about 1 percent, while the rate of death from untreated AIDS is 98 percent.

‘Appalling irresponsibility’: Senior scientists attack Chinese researchers for creating new strains of influenza virus in veterinary laboratory

Experts warn of danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.

Senior scientists have criticised the “appalling irresponsibility” of researchers in China who have deliberately created new strains of influenza virus in a veterinary laboratory.

They warned there is a danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.

Lord May of Oxford, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the study published today in the journal Science as doing nothing to further the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.

“They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” Lord May told The Independent.

“The record of containment in labs like this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It’s appallingly irresponsible,” he said.

The controversial study into viral mixing was carried out by a team led by Professor Hualan Chen, director of China’s National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute.

Professor Chen and her colleagues deliberately mixed the H5N1 bird-flu virus, which is highly lethal but not easily transmitted between people, with a 2009 strain of H1N1 flu virus, which is very infectious to humans.

When flu viruses come together by infecting the same cell they can swap genetic material and produce “hybrids” through the re-assortment of genes. The researchers were trying to emulate what happens in nature when animals such as pigs are co-infected with two different strains of virus, Professor Chen said.

Epidemic fears see bird flu doctors halt research

Saturday 21 January 2012

inShare4

Influenza experts have agreed to a two-month voluntary ban on research into a highly dangerous strain of bird-flu virus because of fears that it may escape from their laboratories to cause a global human epidemic.

In a joint letter to the journals Science and Nature, 39 researchers from around the world emphasise that their laboratories are safe and secure but they nevertheless acknowledge that there is grave public concern about the accidental or deliberate release of an “airborne” strain of H5N1 avian influenza which could be transmitted easily between people.

“We realise that organisations and governments around the world need time to find the best solutions for opportunities and challenges that stem from the work. To provide time for these discussions, we have agreed on a voluntary pause of 60 days on any research involving highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 viruses leading to the generation of viruses that are more transmissible in mammals,” the letter states.

Last month, the US Government announced that it had asked Science and Nature to withhold key details of two studies carried out in the US and the Netherlands where scientists mutated the H5N1 bird-flu strain into a form that could be transmitted easily between laboratory ferrets – the standard animal model for human influenza.

Alarm as Dutch lab creates highly contagious killer flu

Fear of terrorism as university prepares to publish key details

A deadly strain of bird flu with the potential to infect and kill millions of people has been created in a laboratory by European scientists – who now want to publish full details of how they did it.

The discovery has prompted fears within the US Government that the knowledge will fall into the hands of terrorists wanting to use it as a bio-weapon of mass destruction.

Some scientists are questioning whether the research should ever have been undertaken in a university laboratory, instead of at a military facility.

The US Government is now taking advice on whether the information is too dangerous to be published.

To see the graphic: The last outbreak – A deadly virus even before the latest twist

“The fear is that if you create something this deadly and it goes into a global pandemic, the mortality and cost to the world could be massive,” a senior scientific adviser to the US Government told The Independent, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The worst-case scenario here is worse than anything you can imagine.”

For the first time the researchers have been able to mutate the H5N1 strain of avian influenza so that it can be transmitted easily through the air in coughs and sneezes. Until now, it was thought that H5N1 bird flu could only be transmitted between humans via very close physical contact.

Dutch scientists carried out the controversial research to discover how easy it was to genetically mutate H5N1 into a highly infectious “airborne” strain of human flu. They believe that the knowledge gained will be vital for the development of new vaccines and drugs.

But critics say the scientists have endangered the world by creating a highly dangerous form of flu which could escape from the laboratory – as well as opening a Pandora’s box for fanatical terrorists wishing to make a bio-weapon.

The H5N1 strain of avian influenza has killed hundreds of millions of birds since it first appeared in 1996, but has so far infected only about 600 people who came into direct contact with infected poultry.

What makes H5N1 so dangerous, though, is that it has killed about 60 per cent of those it has infected, making it one of the most lethal known forms of influenza in modern history – a deadliness moderated only by its inability (so far) to spread easily through airborne water droplets.

Leading scientists condemn decision to continue controversial research into deadly H5N1 bird-flu virus

Research has already led to the creation of a mutated form of avian flu that can spread easily between mammals – including humans

Leading scientists have condemned a decision by flu researchers to continue their controversial research into the deadly H5N1 bird-flu virus, which has already led to the creation of a mutated form of avian flu that can spread easily between mammals – including humans.

Forty of the world’s most prominent flu researchers have decided to lift their voluntary moratorium on studies into the airborne transmission of the H5N1 strain of bird-flu, which they imposed upon themselves last January following public outrage over the work.

They said that the benefits of the research in preventing and dealing with a future flu pandemic outweigh the risks of an accidental leak of the mutant virus from a laboratory or the deliberate attempt to create deadly strains of flu by terrorists or rogue governments.

However, other leading scientists vehemently denounced the decision on the grounds that it would be more dangerous to proceed with the research than to continue with the moratorium, claiming that there has been little discussion of the decision outside the flu-research community.

Professor Lord May, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, said the moratorium should be continued because there are two possible downsides to research that deliberately aims at making the H5N1 bird-flu virus more infectious to humans.

“As this research becomes more widely known and disseminated, there is the opportunity for evil people to pervert it. My other concern is the statistics of containment are not what they ought to be,” Lord May told The Independent.

“The dangers of going ahead with the research outweigh the benefits of what may emerge. As I look at it, on the balance of probabilities, going ahead and lifting the moratorium is more dangerous than not going ahead,” he said.

Earth Watch Report  -  Biological Hazards

21.04.2013 Biological Hazard Germany Lower Saxony, [District of Osnaburg] Damage level
Details

Biological Hazard in Germany on Sunday, 21 April, 2013 at 15:44 (03:44 PM) UTC.

Description
A mild form of bird flu has broken out in Lower Saxony. Avian influenza virus subtype H7 has been detected in 2 turkey farms in the district of Osnaburg. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture on Thu 18 Apr 2013. All 27 000 turkeys in these f arms must now be culled. There should not be human health risk by this mild form of avian flu.
Biohazard name: H7, LPAI
Biohazard level: 1/4 Low
Biohazard desc.: Bacteria and viruses including Bacillus subtilis, canine hepatitis, Escherichia coli, varicella (chicken pox), as well as some cell cultures and non-infectious bacteria. At this level precautions against the biohazardous materials in question are minimal, most likely involving gloves and some sort of facial protection. Usually, contaminated materials are left in open (but separately indicated) waste receptacles. Decontamination procedures for this level are similar in most respects to modern precautions against everyday viruses (i.e.: washing one’s hands with anti-bacterial soap, washing all exposed surfaces of the lab with disinfectants, etc). In a lab environment, all materials used for cell and/or bacteria cultures are decontaminated via autoclave.
Symptoms:
Status: confirmed

GMOs: Tell Makers of Similac That Our Babies Are Not “Human Lab Rats”

April 18th, 2013

formula-6-sml

GMOs—foods that have been genetically engineered by Monsanto and other chemical manufacturers—have never been adequately tested for long-term human health or environmental safety.

Many of the ingredients used in infant formula, especially soy-based formula, are derived from crops that have been genetically altered to internally produce pesticides or to be resistant to specific herbicides, so that weed killers that would normally kill or injure the plant can be sprayed more frequently and at higher doses.

Nobody should be eating GMO foods, especially babies.  But until infant formula makers stop using GMO ingredients, hundreds of thousands of newborns and infants will be unwitting participants in this huge, uncontrolled experiment with the health of the next generation.

It’s time to tell infant formula makers to stop experimenting with the health of babies who consume their infant formula — sign the petition below.

GMOs are prohibited in organic infant formula, but widely used in conventional formula.  Babies are not the human equivalent of lab rats.  Given that some scientific studies point to serious harm from consuming GMOs, all formula should be free from GMOs until they can conclusively be proven safe.

Thanks to the work of As You Sow, a shareholder advocacy group, owners of Abbott Laboratories stock (makers of Similac infant formula, one of the leading US formula brands), will be voting on April 26 on a resolution to adopt a non-GMO policy.

Let’s make our voices heard!  Add your name to the petition urging Abbott Laboratories to remove GMOs from its Similac infant formula.

Duke Professor Suggests Simple Solution to Counter “Ag-Gag” Laws

Activist Post

The old maxim that if you knew how sausage was made you would never eat it has been highlighted by many undercover videos taken by employees of factory farming operations and activists alike.

In response, the industry has increasingly lobbied for “Ag-Gag” laws that criminalize whistleblowing and undercover investigations, essentially rendering animal cruelty completely invisible.

Arguably, animal rights activists are the most tenacious; so much so, that they have routinely been labeled anarchists and terrorists by various governmental organizations the world over. Yet, beyond the general demonization campaign of anyone who professes sympathy for the proven suffering of factory farm animals, we arrive at much the same question asked by those who wish to know if their food has been genetically modified — Do consumers have the right to independently investigate the origin and production of the food they choose (and pay) to ingest?

The Big Ag lobby has countered investigations into animal cruelty and health hazards at industrial farm facilities with issues rooted in contractual agreements that bind employees to certain conduct, and the issue of private property rights.

Karen De Coster summarized the legal and moral issues very well when she stated:

Indeed, there is a libertarian case to be made for private property rights, and thus the owners of property banning the filming of their business matters – right or wrong – within the confines of their property lines. This is something the public has a tough time dealing with because the emotional issues (animal abuse, disease, and degrading quality food) override reason in terms of understanding property rights and non-aggression against those rights. For instance, these same people would never allow for “whistleblowers” to enter their home property to film so-called “inappropriate” goings-on within their home. But while it is libertarian, and perfectly reasonable, for a private food producer to disallow video and photography on private property, there is a larger, moral issue here. (source)

We initially reported on new legislation in early 2011, and said the following in regards to both morality and the clear health impacts of being kept in the dark:

Strangely, consumers may actually want to know if their meat is being electrocuted, beaten, or ground up alive as some recent videos have exposed. Consumers may also want to know what the animals eat, if they ever see sunlight, if they are injected with chemicals, or even genetically cloned. Since the FDA does little to shine light on these and other concerns, activists have been the only source of this information. Now, they will face jail time for doing so if this measure passes. (source, with some horrific videos)

I’ve always considered myself a cat person, but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for dogs. I had been yearning for a little puppy for the past few weeks, so a few days ago, I adopted a chihuahua- rottweiler mix puppy. She’s 5 weeks old and I named her Sadie. She and her 5 siblings were dropped off at our local shelter and they didn’t have a home. This is a typical “dog choosing the owner” scenario. I walked up to the cage where all of the puppies were and I put my hand in there and she came up to me and licked my hand. Immediately I knew. I was very quick in deciding which pup because I knew she wanted me. She has such a fun personality and she’s very playful but also loves to cuddle. I’m proud to have been able to give her a “forever home”.

The Tankster

My “Tank” is a paws rescue, When I went to adopt an older cat I thought I would just find a regular sized kitty. Wrong ! This 20 pounder had been living in a 4′x4′ cage for 2 months! The lady opened the door and said “come on out Diego”, I looked down and said ” No that’s a tank” and he looked up at that moment and he came to a new home with a new name and a weight loss diet. At his 1 year check up he had gained 3 pounds. I was shocked! He had been stealing the dog’s food when I was away. Now no one’s food is left out when I leave the house. Hopefully the next check up will find him lighter. A sweet very vocal wall-eyed flame point Siamese mix who purrs instantly when touched. He’s very loving. I couldn’t have found a better tempered pal.

Scamper

My mom found Scamper during the summer of 2007 when he was only a few weeks old. He and his siblings were hanging around a bush by the side of a road. He was the only gray kitten in the litter, and he was also the only one who begged for my mom’s attention. So she brought him to our house that we were actually in the process of moving out of at that point. He immediately made himself at home, exploring, sleeping, and getting to know all of us. He was such a cute, scrawny little kitten, and he definitely knew how to play. He also knew how to make himself comfortable. One of the first things I noticed about him was that he liked to stretch out and even lay on his back while he slept, which I had never seen a cat do before. He was obviously very comfortable in his new home and we liked him a lot, so we decided to keep him. Despite our already having a very dominating, territorial female cat who had scared off all other cats who entered her domain, Scamper decided to stay. He didn’t get scared off. Not ever. We brought him with us to our new duplex that we moved into, and we’ve had him ever since. Of our two cats, he is definitely the house cat. The other one stays outside for the most part. Scamper prefers to sleep most of the time, either on my bed, my MOM’S bed, or the couch. But he also loves to play still. He also loves attention, as is evident by his frequent meowing at me to get it. He is definitely not scrawny anymore, he has a pretty good belly on him. But he’s definitely not fat. He’s just a healthy house cat. Scamper and I have become very good friends since the day my mom brought him to our old duplex. In my humble opinion, he is the greatest cat who ever lived. And he is definitely the greatest furry friend I have ever had :)

Our Adopted Family

It started in 2007 with Mr. Big, a pure bred Rat Terrier who showed up in our yard on the Fourth of July. We searched for months to find his owners but soon came to realize that he was probably unwanted due to some emotion problems. His healing was drastically helped in 2008 by a half Jack half greyhound puppy we named Scully. At 10:PM one night my daughter called me up begging to take a puppy her co-worker was taking to the pound the next morning. She was only 4 months old and a roly-poly ball of energy. Next came Mini in 2011, she was at a rescue and featured on the front page of the local newspaper and yet no one else responded to her little terrier Corgi mix face. She is the sweetest girl I have ever known. When I saw Max also in 2011 on the petfinder site I had to get him even though he was in another state. He was another pure bred Rattie (a Decker) with severe emotional problems. Our newest baby is Hurley, a little bit terrier and a lot of everything else, again a petfinder find in 2012. These five have become our children. I can’t imagine life without any one of them. They have given us so much. It amazes me that these were dogs no one wanted. Each one of them is a piece of my heart.

Our little guy…Loki

On April 23rd 2012, our beloved German Shepard girl, Nina died in my arms at 13 1/2 years old. She was my daughters first dog, and our first dog as a family. I was raised with dogs since I was 7. Losing one is never easy, and I think about each and everyone of them. But losing my Nina hit me hardest. So hard, that I was sure I couldn’t handle the heart ache, therefore, was not going to have another dog.

My husband and daughter however, had different plans. My daughter couldn’t bare the emptiness of the house and suggested that we adopt a dog. I said I wasn’t ready. My husband kept leaving info of various dogs from different shelters strategically placed for me to see.

Finally, after my daughters pleading, we took a ride to a no-kill shelter. After looking at several cute dogs, I just wasn’t feeling it and much to my daughters dismay, I wanted to leave. The director of the shelter asked me to look at one more dog who was actually born at the shelter 5months prior.

My daughter begged so I said ok. All I remember from that moment on was a bundle of boundless energy running into the room and leaping into my daughters lap. Well as you may have guessed, I fell for him! Since adopting Loki, we also got another German Shepherd, a boy this time, & very different from my Nina. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her, but adopting my little guy Loki has been the best way to heal my once very broken heart.

Rescue -March 31/2013

1

We had a kitten and older Tom coming to house to eat. Both were scared of people so food was put outside for a few weeks . We trapped the kitten and had her spayed, she is really scared and has 4 of our other rescued cats to get used to. As soon as we can ,we will try to trap the Male and have him neutered . He has extra toes and I hope he will be easier to tame then the female kitten. .

I think the male had a home but the female’s Mother must of had kittens after she was dropped off and this is only one survived.

People that drop off cats should be found and charged.

Meet Bandit

Bandit had a rough start to his short life. He was first owned by a Chinese exchange student who gave him to the owner of a Chinese restaurant when she returned to her own country. The restaurant owner’s wife was subsequently in a horrible car accident that left her both mentally and physically impaired. Because the man had so much to attend to, his invalid wife, two small children and two restaurants, he had no time for the little dog. Bandit was put in a small cage and almost forgotten. He stayed in that small cage for about a year. Seldom walked or played with and fed sporatically. When I got him, he was just a small bag of bones. Two weeks later, he now weighs in at 10.9 pounds, has a healthy looking coat and is just a bundle of pure love. He has stollen all our hearts, including that of my older doxey, Nutty. Bandit has finally found his permanant home.

Lia from Rosiori Dog

My husband threatened to move out if I brought a dog home. But morally I could not let Lia with her sad, longing look stay in Rosiori´s hell in Romania. There were five dogs in her “box”; one m2 per dog and a lot of urine and excrements. (I didn´t know she had been rescued to a vet station i Bucharest because of an infected ear and her thin condition.) There was some problems getting her to Sweden, but finally we fetched a very shy dog from the airport and drove her home through the snow storm. She was very scared, wanted to stay in the basement, but I “scratched up the stairs”. After that she got braver. And braver. She´s curious. After two monthts we can do everything we want and take here everywhere. She is also helping dogs with behavioral issues, since I´m a dog coach at weekends (and I send the extra money I earn to sterilizations of romanian dogs and cats). And my husband hasn´t moved.

My Little Lady – Tina

TINA – Tina was born in 2000 and had herpes in her right eye. I worked for a lady who owned a landscaping business and she fostered cats and kittens. In 2001 she fostered Tina a tortie. Tina needed sab in her eye and ½ a lysine twice a day. Tina would lie on my desk and wait for me by the door. Jackie finally told me that she needed to take Tina back on Friday. I thought about Tina and the possibility that nobody would adopt her because of her eye problem. I asked to return Tina to the shelter so I could adopt her. She came home with me and immediately took care of Baby my tortie that was 18 years old and looked like Tina. She was prim and proper and had so much love to give. She loved giving me kisses on the tip of my nose. Tina also came to me and opened her mouth when I hollared “Silly pilly time” so I could give her the pill and put the sab in her eye. Within a month, Baby’s organs began to fail and she died in my arms. Tina went into a depression. Jackie then fostered Simon a light and dark gray tabby who was several months old. When she told me that Simon had to go back to the shelter on Monday, I asked if I could take him home over the weekend. It was love at first sight. Tina came out of her depression and they were inseparable all weekend. I took Simon back to the shelter and adopted him. In 2007 Tina got FIP and passed away on June 6, 2007. My friend who I was living with became highly allergic to cats. A friend that I worked with said her mom was looking for a mate for her cat Frankie. Simon got his forever home. I miss Tinalina so much. Having rescues are the greatest joy in the universe.

Meeka’s Story

I had signed up to rescue a Siberian husky about 10 years ago. I received a call that there was a 2 year old husky in serious need of a home. She had been terribly abused, teeth missing from getting continually beat with a baseball bat. She was scared of anyone that came near her. They said if I didn’t get her by that Friday, that she would be euthanized. I went that day to see her. She was in a kennel hiding under the bench seat. I softly called out to her to see if she would come out. She looked very nervous, but still came to the gate to see me. They let me take her out for a walk. She bounced on her hind legs for the first 2 minutes of the walk, she seemed so happy! I took her home that day, and with much love and rehabilitation Meeka has gotten over much of her nervousness. And she’s had her “brother” Kodiak helping her for the last 7 years. Meeka turned 13 this year, and we believe she’s had the happiest life we could give her. She has definitely brightened our lives with her sweet disposition and funny woos. We adore her! <3

I always had cats. I was so disappointed when I found out I was allergic to them. I went 20 years without one and then I found out I was not allergic to Himalayans. I called every shelter in Maine and finally found one 6 hours away. After they checked my references, they told me I could have this wonderful 1 1/2 year old male named Easter (because he was born on Easter Sunday). He was a god send to my family. My stepdad, Don, was confined to bed most of the day, Easter became his constant companion. I had never seen him laugh more than I did at Easter comical antics.

Ella, a German Shepherd Dog, was a stray in Florida. She was dumped by her owner. A friend of mine who volunteers in a rescue contacted me and asked me if I wanted her. We had to go through many hoops to get her to Maine. But thanks to many angels she made it. She flew in a plane, stayed in several kennels and made a trip in a Winnebago. Now she lives with Easter, now 10 years old and me. Easter never took to any other cats but she and Ella are good friends.

I  received this  alert from  Surviving  Survivalism .com

As  the  hour  is late  and  things  are  starting to  get a bit   gnarly , I felt  it  best to pass this information along for those who would be interested.  Every little bit  helps and even if you are  not  planning  on  living off  grid anytime  soon , knowledge is a  precious  commodity.  If  you  ever  have a  need for it  when you are  down to the  wire is not  a good time to try and find the information you  need.  Forewarned is  forearmed!!
