MSM Menongoccocal disease case reported in Chicago

A case of the disease that causes meningitis has been reported in Chicago among a man who sex with men (MSM), the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) said May 20.

The case of meningococcal disease is similar to those reported among gay and bisexual men in Los Angeles and New York this year, said Brian Richardson, CDPH spokesperson.

“This is the only case we have seen reported in Chicago this year,” Richardson noted.

Richardson said that the man, whose case was reported to CDPH May 12, has fully recovered.

CDPH identified the man’s close contacts to determine who will need preventative antibiotics, said Richardson.

“We have no reason to believe that there is an outbreak,” he stressed. ” Currently, we do not believe that there is an increased risk among MSM in Chicago. That said, we’re continuing to follow this closely.”

Last year, Chicago saw seven cases of the disease. None of them were among MSMs. The May 12 case marks the first this year.

U.S. public health officials have been on alert since last September when New York City saw four cases of meningococcal disease among MSMs. In April, Brett Shaad, a gay man in Los Angeles, died after contracting the disease. Cases on both coasts have sparked fears of an outbreak among gay and bisexual men across the country.

But Richardson said that Chicago has not identified any other cases, and that there is no evidence of increased risk.

The diseases has hit gay Chicagoans in the past. In 2003, the city saw an outbreak among gay and bisexual men, and three men died. More than 14,000 were vaccinated during that time.

In 2008, teenagers on the city’s West Side also began contracting the disease, and vaccinations were done there, said Richardson.

Howard Brown Health Center has vaccinations on hand, the organization said in a recent statement. That vaccination is $150 for uninsured patients. The agency has been informed of the reported case, said Richardson.

But health officials say because there is no increased risk among MSM currently, CDHP is sticking to its usual suggestion that youth ages 11-18 receive the vaccination.

Floodwaters rising after storms deluge heartland

By JIM SALTER and JIM SUHR

Associated Press

— Flood fighters from small Mississippi River hamlets to the suburbs of Chicago staged a feverish battle Friday to hold back raging rivers, after days of torrential rains soaked much of the Midwest.

Mississippi River communities in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri are expected to see significant flooding – some near-record levels – by the weekend, a sharp contrast to just two months ago when the river was approaching record lows. Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana had flooding, too. All told, dozens of Midwestern rivers were well over their banks after rains that began Wednesday dumped up to 6 inches of new water on already saturated soil.

In Quincy, Ill., the normally slow to swell Mississippi River rose nearly 10 feet in 36 hours, National Weather Service hydrologist Mark Fuchs said. One bridge in the town about 120 miles north of St. Louis was closed Friday, leaving one open.

“That’s pretty amazing,” Fuchs said of the fast-rising river. “It’s just been skyrocketing.”

Smaller rivers in Illinois seemed to be causing the worst of the flooding. In suburban Chicago, which got up to 7 inches of rain in a 24-hour period ending Thursday, record levels of water were moving through the Des Plaines River past heavily populated western suburbs and into the Illinois River to the south.

As many as 1,500 residents of the northern Illinois city of Marseilles were evacuated Thursday night when fears of a levee breach were heightened as seven barges broke free from a towing vessel and came to rest against a dam on the Illinois River.

And in the central Illinois town of London Mills, the swollen Spoon River topped a levee, forcing about half of the 500 residents to evacuate. Police Chief Scott Keithley said some homes were half under water, and abandoned cars were sent floating in the torrent of water.

Volunteers turn out to fill sandbags Volunteers turn out in force to fill sand bags Sunday, April 20, 2013 in Grand Rapids Mich.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Patty Moyer offloaded a freshly packed sandbag onto a pallet Sunday and stood up panting, sweating under a heavy coat and headband as she worked with roughly 300 volunteers in Grand Rapids.Summoned by city leaders working to minimize impacts of a downtown under siege by a Grand River swelling past its brim, Moyer had been at work for hours with a dozen members of the Forest Hills Crew Team.

The Grand River is expected to crest at multiple locations throughout Greater Grand Rapids on Sunday, particularly downtown and in Comstock Park, where high water forced residents to flee their waterlogged homes in droves.

Such dire predictions prompted city leaders to ask for help filling tens of thousands of sandbags for residents and businesses.

“We were kind of torn because there’s flooding in Ada and Lowell and Grand Rapids,” Moyer said after schlepping a sandbag to a pallet. “One of our (team) board members … heard that we could come down and fill bags, so we jumped on it as quickly as we could.”

At the Grand Rapids Public Works building, 201 Market Ave. SW, the crew team worked amidst what city leaders estimated was 300 volunteers out since 8 a.m. to fill sandbags that will be used to shore up flooded areas along the river. The work will continue all day.

It was the highest turnout so far after three days spent packing 40,000 sandbags that have been dispersed to problem spots throughout the city, including riverside structures downtown such as the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After days spent surging to historic levels, the Grand River finally crested Sunday night in downtown Grand Rapids and Comstock Park.

Measurements from the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids show the river peaked at 21.85 feet downtown around 10 p.m., breaking the record of 19.64 feet set in 1985.

In Comstock Park, the river crested at 17.8 feet around the same time, eking past the 65-year-old record of 17.75 feet set in 1948.

The new benchmarks are the culmination of days of waiting for the swollen waterway to hit its peak after a prolonged period of torrential rainfall last week.

Forecasters had expected the bloated river to peak downtown and in Comstock Park around 2 a.m. Monday, but the figures show it is not expected to rise further.

FBI Entraps US Citizen Attempting to Join US-funded Al Qaeda in Syria

Image: FBI’s latest entrapped patsy, Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, a U.S. citizen, attempted to join Al Qaeda’s Syrian franchise, Jabhat al-Nusra. The irony is, as Tounisi is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, the US State Department has announced an additional $123 million in military aid to these very same terrorists.

….

April 21, 2013 (LD) – As the FBI reels from its bungled Boston bombing case, where the suspects turned out to have been contacted and perhaps monitored (even directed) by the FBI up to 2 years prior to the attacks, the Chicago Tribune has now reported of yet another bizarre FBI entrapment case hyped as a “foiled” would-be terrorist.

In its article, “FBI: Aurora man wanted to join al-Qaida in Syria,” the Chicago Tribune would report:

An 18-year-old Aurora man with ties to a foiled attempt last year to bomb a downtown Chicago bar was arrested as he was about to travel to the Middle East to join the al-Qaida terrorist network, federal officials said Saturday.

Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, a U.S. citizen, was held without bail Saturday after being arrested the night before at O’Hare International Airport, where he was about to board an airplane to Istanbul, Turkey, FBI officials said in a press release.

Bizarre, considering US ally and NATO-member Turkey has hosted thousands of other known terrorists  passing through Turkish territory to invade Syria, and even facilitated their activities along with US CIA agents near the Turkish-Syrian border since the conflict in Syria began in 2011.

The Chicago Tribune would specifically mention Al Qaeda’s Syrian franchise, Jahbat al-Nusra:

Tounisi had hoped to eventually join a jihadist militant group operating inside Syria called Jabhat al-Nusrah, according to a federal complaint unsealed Saturday and filed in U.S. District Court. The organization is an alias for al-Qaida in Iraq, the complaint said.

Tounisi had the year before, assisted another FBI-entrapped patsy. The Chicago Tribune reports:

According to the complaint, Tounisi was a close friend of Daoud, who on Sept. 14, 2012, traveled into Chicago with an undercover agent who brought him to a Jeep that had an inert explosive device in it, officials have said.

Daoud allegedly drove the Jeep to the target — identified by the Tribune as the Cactus Bar & Grill at 404 S. Wells St. — and walked to an alley a block away, where he pulled a triggering device he thought would explode the vehicle, authorities said. The bomb never exploded and Daoud was apprehended and is being held without bail.

“Tounisi and Daoud appeared to share an interest in violent jihad, a topic about which the two exchanged a number of emails, phone calls, and text messages,” according to the complaint filed Saturday.

FBI officials said that in preparation for last year’s foiled attack, Tounisi had “recommended certain attack techniques, offered ideas about targeting, and researched those locations online to analyze their feasibility.”

While Daoud allegedly continued his role in the plot, Tounisi backed out in mid-August because he suspected that the person Daoud was working with was an undercover law enforcement officer, according to the complaint. Daoud told the undercover officer that Tounisi wanted to go overseas and join a terrorist group.

According to the complaint, hours after Daoud was arrested, Tounisi was interviewed by FBI agents “and admitted to assisting Daoud in target selection and acknowledged that he had contemplated traveling to Yemen to carry out jihad.”

After Daoud’s arrest, Tounisi allegedly continued to research travel to Syria and terrorist organizations. He also applied for and obtained a new passport, officials said.

Perhaps most ironic of all is what Tounisi is being charged with:

He was was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, a felony offense that could bring 15 years in federal prison.

This is particularly ironic because US Secretary of State John Kerry has just announced an additional $123 million in military aid that is headed directly to this very same foreign terrorist organization, Jahbat al-Nusra – and unlike Tounisi, Kerry and his collaborators are not being charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Chicago Muslims condemn actions of Boston bombing suspects

At weekly prayer, congregations also brace for backlash

Condemnation.

That was the immediate response of Chicago Muslims when reports surfaced that the Boston Marathon bombing suspects shared their faith.

As a manhunt for one of the suspects unfolded Friday, Islamic communities across Illinois gathered for their weekly congregational prayers. Imams carefully wove their sermons around the news coverage, while the faithful prayed for protection from an inevitable backlash.

Fayed Khan, president of the Downtown Islamic Center, said even if the suspects claimed Islam as their world view, “their actions indicate they’re not Muslim.”

“It will be condemned to the ultimate extent,” Khan said, the urgency in his voice so intense his words ran together.

Just as the suspects’ uncle Ruslan Tsarni decried the potential scars inflicted upon the family’s Chechen community, Muslim doctors, lawyers, teachers and parents braced themselves for the types of insults, accusations and stares they’ve come to expect ever since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

But it was evident on Friday that weariness now accompanies their urgency.

“Under current circumstances, there’s always a knee-jerk reaction. ‘Oh, God. Please keep us protected from wayward folks,’ ” said Kareem Irfan, a Chicago attorney and imam who preached in a Peoria mosque on Friday. “As a leader, I feel distressed that we have to respond with denial and condemnation. I hope it becomes more and more clear to society that there are nut jobs of all faiths.”

Similarly, Dr. Mohammed Kaiseruddin, a physician and imam who preached in the Downtown Islamic Center in Chicago, resents the need to defend his community but has become resigned to that reality.

“We were holding our breath that the suspects or perpetrators would not be identified as Muslim,” said Kaiseruddin, who is also chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago. “But it has happened now. The guy who sent the ricin letter, what faith did he belong to? Sandy Hook. What faith did he belong to? That was never reported. It’s becoming a routine drill for us, unfortunately.”

Relatives of Marathon bombing suspects worried that older brother was corrupting ‘sweet’ younger sibling

04/19/2013 5:02 PM

Barcroft Media

At left, Tamerlan Tsarnaev practiced boxing at the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in April 2009 in Boston. At right, Tsarnaev arrived at the martial arts center.

A relative of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects said he repeatedly warned the 19-year-old fugitive Dzhokhar Tsarnaev about the bad influence of his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed overnight in a shootout with police.

A picture has begun to emerge of 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev as an aggressive, possibly radicalized immigrant who may have ensnared his younger brother Dzhokhar — described almost universally as a smart and sweet kid — into an act of terror that killed three people and injured more than at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

“I used to warn Dzhokhar that Tamerlan was up to no good,” Zaur Tsarnaev, who identified himself as a 26-year-old cousin, said in a phone interview on Friday from Makhachkala. “[Tamerlan] was always getting into trouble. He was never happy, never cheering, never smiling. He used to strike his girlfriend. He hurt her a few times. He was not a nice man. I don’t like to speak about him. He caused problems for my family.”

Zaur Tsarnaev said he most recently expressed his concerns about Tamerlan — the alleged bomber pictured in a dark hat in FBI videos released Thursday — to Dzhokhar when Dzhokar visited last summer. He added that Dzhokhar went to mosque sometimes but he was “never an extremist.”

“Dzhokhar is a sweet boy, innocent. He was always smiling, friendly and happy,” Zaur Tsarnaev said. “I don’t know how he is involved in this.”

A YouTube account with Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s name includes a playlist that features a video dedicated to the prophecy of the Black Banners of Khurasan, which is apparently embraced by Islamic extremists, including Al Qaeda. It could not be confirmed whether the user is the same person as the dead bombing suspect.

Ruslan Tsarni, an uncle of the suspects living in Maryland, said he has never known the family to have ill will toward the United States but when asked what may have provoked them, he said “being losers, hatred to those who were able to settle themselves. These are the only reasons I can imagine. Anything else to do with religion, to do with Islam, it’s a fake.”

Tsarni said the suspects’ father, an auto mechanic, has had limited influence on them and recently moved back to Russia. Ruslan said he no longer has anything to do with that family, but would not elaborate on what led to the falling out.

“I just wanted my family away from them,” Tsarni said.

Dzhokar and Tamarlan Tsarnaev came from southern Russia, near war-torn Chechnya, more than five years ago, and assimilated through school and sports into the Greater Boston community and culture.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the alleged bomber pictured in a dark hat in FBI videos released Thursday, was a talented boxer with hopes of joining the US Olympic team, people who knew him said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the suspect seen in FBI photos in a white cap, is a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the school confirmed. He was an all-star wrestler and a member of the class of 2011 at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, and won a Cambridge City Scholarship that year. He was on the run Friday morning and the target of an unprecedented manhunt in Greater Boston.

But within the brothers’ ordinariness, there were also subtle signs of alienation.

“I don’t have a single American friend,” Tamerlan said in a photo essay about his love of boxing. “I don’t understand them.”

John Allan, owner of Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts Boston, said the older brother, Tamerlan, was an accomplished amateur boxer, competing in the national Golden Gloves competition.

“He was the best boxer in Boston,” said Allan, who remembers helping in a competition three years ago. “He smoked all the professionals.”

Allan said Tsarnaev was trained by his father, who was also a skilled boxer. And he was always respectful. “They were an incredible family….This was so shocking to me.”

But Tsarnaev hadn’t been to the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in years, instead going to another nearby boxing gym. Until this month. Allan, who is currently traveling in Thailand, got an e-mail within the past week saying Tsarnaev showed up at the gym acting rude and disrespectful, using other people’s equipment, walking on the mats with his shoes.

“It was a clear indication that something was up,” Allan said, noting that Tsarnaev hadn’t even been to his gym before the incident in years. “He was becoming a complete [expletive].

“It was completely out of place of place for him,” said Allan, who was also contacted by the FBI about Tamerlan.

In the photo essay, called “Will Box for Passport,” Tamerlan stops to answer a phone call while walking from his Mercedes to the martial arts center. He has a long wool scarf wrapped fashionably around his neck and gleaming white leather slip-on shoes and is carrying an Oceanfly dufflebag.

He said in the essay that he quit smoking and drinking. “God said no alcohol.” A Muslim, he says, “There are no values any more,” and worries that “people can’t control themselves.”

People who knew the suspects struggled today morning to reconcile the young men they knew, who lived on Norfolk Street in Cambridge, with the acts of terrorism they are accused of committing.

“He was normal,” said Lulu Emmons, who went to Rindge & Latin, the city’s public high school, with Dzhokhar.

“He kind of fit in with everyone. Not really close with anyone, but he was friendly.

“I am just a little shocked. I sat next to this guy. I joked with him. I laughed with him. I had class with him. It is a little crazy,” she said.

Former teacher and school photographer at Rindge, Larry Aaronson, said he knew Dzhokhar.

“If someone were to ask me what the kid was like, I would say he had a heart of gold,” he said. “He was as gracious as possible.”

Aaronson knew Dzhokhar came from near a war zone and they had conversations about this. “All of this is just freaking me out.”

Pamala Rolon, a senior at UMass Dartmouth and a resident assistant at the Pine Dale dorms on campus, said she knew Dzhokhar for the past year and finds it incredible that he could have played any role in the bombs at the Boston marathon.

“He studied. He hung out with me and my friends,” she said in a telephone interview Friday. “I’m in shock.”

Rolon, 22, said the 300 or so students at the dorm were evacuated this morning by school authorities as the campus was shut down.

Boston Bombings Have Led to Multiple Revenge Attacks on Innocent Muslims

Reuters
Rebecca Greenfield Apr 19, 2013

The same week that the New York Post first falsely reported the Boston bombing suspect was  a Saudi national then falsely put a Moroccan-American track runner on its cover, it accurately reported on Friday an attack on an innocent Bangladeshi man living in the Bronx who some “idiots” mistook for an Arab. Abdullah Faruque, a South Asian network engineer, was at an Applebees on Monday night when he was accosted by a group of three or four men, reports the Post, after they asked if he was an Arab. It wasn’t until he got home, his shoulder dislocated, that he found out about the bombing at the Boston Marathon. “I saw the news, and then it hits me: That’s why I got jumped,” he told the Post.

It’s possible for this sort of baseless revenge to happen, with or without the Post‘s help. But it’s worth wonderng where these men— and the one who assaulted a Muslim doctor in Boston, and the ones who vandalized the future site of a Boston mosque—got the idea for taking out revenge on a “dark skinned male”  in the wake of the bombing.

18.04.2013 Nuclear Event USA State of Illinois, Seneca [LaSalle Nuclear Power Plant] Damage level
Details

Nuclear Event in USA on Thursday, 18 April, 2013 at 13:04 (01:04 PM) UTC.

Description
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III staff is monitoring the La Salle nuclear power plant after a lightning strike knocked out offsite power to both Units 1 and 2. The NRC has mobilized its Incident Response Center in Region III, located in Lisle, Ill., and is monitoring the events along with the resident inspector onsite. La Salle declared an Unusual Event around 3:11 p.m. Wednesday, after external power was lost to the two Mark II boiling water reactors. The plants automatically shut down and all control rods were inserted. The plant’s diesel generators are currently supplying power to plant equipment. An Unusual Event is the lowest levels of the NRC’s four level emergency classification system. The two-unit site is operated by Exelon Generation Co., and is located in Marseilles, Ill., roughly 11 miles southeast of Ottawa.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says a lightning strike knocked out power to a northern Illinois nuclear plant for several hours Wednesday night, but emergency generators kicked in to keep the site running.

Exelon Generation says it believes lightning hit a substation that carries electricity to and from its LaSalle Generating Station. Both reactors shut down as a safety precaution, and diesel generators continued to power plant equipment.

Spokeswoman Krista Lopykinski says off-site power was restored late Wednesday night, and the plant officially exited the so-called “unusual event” on Thursday morning. An unusual event is the lowest of the four emergency classifications.

Exelon says reactors will remain offline until appropriate safety checks and procedures are completed.

The plant is in rural LaSalle County, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago.

Eyewitness: Authorities Announced “Drill” Before Boston Explosions

UM coach “thought it was odd” bomb sniffing dogs were at start and finish lines

An eyewitness to the two explosions at the Boston Marathon today said that a “drill” was repeatedly announced before the bombs exploded and that he “thought it was odd” bomb sniffing dogs were in place before the blast.

Image: Twitter

University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15 News, “They kept making announcements on the loud speaker that it was just a drill and there was nothing to worry about. “It seemed like there was some sort of threat, but they kept telling us it was just a drill.”

The news station also reports that Stevenson “thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines.”

Stevenson then describes hearing the explosions as he ran away from the scene, having just completed the marathon.

If this report is accurate, it clearly suggests there could have been some degree of prior knowledge of the bombing, which killed two people and injured at least 23.

The fact that the explosions were preceded and overlapped by a”drill” of an almost identical nature mirrors other major terror attacks, such as the 7/7 bombings in London.

It is important to emphasize that the New York Times recently reported that most of the recent domestic terror plots in the United States “were facilitated by the F.B.I.,” suggesting that today’s incident in Boston may have been part of such an operation.

It remains to be seen how the media and the Obama administration will exploit this incident depending who gets the blame, but Rahm Emanuel’s “never let a serious crisis go to waste” advisory is sure to be in play.

“They kept making announcements to the participants do not worry, it’s just a training exercise,” Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15.

(Shades of 9/11 when workers in the South Tower were told to go back into their offices. That the fire was under control.)

Stevenson said he saw law enforcement spotters on the roofs at the start of the race. He’s been in plenty of marathons in Chicago, D.C., Chicago, London and other major metropolitan areas but has never seen that level of security before.

“Evidently, I don’t believe they were just having a training exercise,” Stevenson said. “I think they must have had some sort of threat or suspicion called in.”

Early Evidence Indicates Boston Bombing Was a False Flag

Brandon Turbeville

Only hours after two bombs were detonated near the finish line of a Boston marathon, evidence is beginning to emerge suggesting that the act may have been a false flag attack.

While reports continue to emerge from the scene, a number of facts point toward the typical setup used to devise, control, and execute such an attack as took place around the 9/11, 7/7, and OKC bombings as well as the Aurora and Sandy Hook shootings.

One of the hallmark signals of a false flag attack, as Webster Tarpley has expertly demonstrated in his book, 9/11 Synthetic Terror, is the use of drills acting as a cover for sinister plans and mechanizations within the halls of the shadow government itself which ultimately manifest as false flag terror attacks. Much like the aforementioned attacks, the Boston Bombing also carried the trademark “coincidence” of a drill scheduled to take place at almost exactly the same time that the bombs were being detonated at the marathon.

For instance, earlier in the morning of April 15, 2013, the Boston Globe tweeted “Officials: There will be a controlled explosion opposite the library within one minute as part of bomb squad activities.”

In addition, it was reported by Business Insider in the article “2 More Explosive Devices Found At Boston Marathon,”[1] that a police scanner “said police were going to do a third, controlled explosion on the 600 Block of Boylston Street.”

Yet, despite the fact that the police had scheduled a highly “coincidental” explosion at the JFK Library, much of the mainstream reports regarding the device have presented it as another part of the Boston Bombing itself.
In fact, the New York Post reported almost the polar opposite of the Boston Globe in regards to the second device. It said, “Police confirmed a third explosion at JFK Library in Boston. Boston fire officials confirmed during a press conference that the third explosion was linked to the ones that occurred at the Marathon. There were no injuries reported from the third bombing.”

Andrew Katz of TIME tweeted that “police were investigating reports of bombs in other parts of the city,” and “Citing a police scanner, Katz tweeted that there was an ‘incendiary device’ possible at JFK Library as well as ‘another device’ in front of Boston’s luxury Mandarin Hotel.”

Business Insider also reported that, around 3 p.m., there was a fire inside the JFK Library but states that it was not related to the “terrorist bombings.” This, as I mentioned, is in direct contradiction to the later reports that the “fire” was actually an explosion related to the terror bombing.

Thus, we have a device planted inside the library by the police and confirmation that an explosion at the library was connected to the Boston Bombing. This fact alone should be enough to raise questions regarding the individuals responsible for the bombing. If the police had planted a device inside the Library and the explosion was related to the Boston Bombing, should there not be an immediate investigation of the police?

It should also be noted that Chris Faraone of the Boston Phoenix also tweeted that a police officer near the finish line stated, “There are secondary devices that have been found and are unexploded.”

Also interesting, however, is the fact that the University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach, Ali Stevenson, stated that bomb sniffing dogs were present at both the start and finish lines.

FBI’s History of Handing “Terror Suspects” Live Explosives

Tony Cartalucci
Activist Post

In late September 2011, AFP reported that a man was charged with “planning to fly explosive-packed, remote controlled airplanes into the Pentagon and the Capitol in Washington.” In its report, “US man charged with Pentagon bomb plot,” AFP stated (emphasis added):

During the alleged plot, undercover FBI agents posed as accomplices who supplied Ferdaus with one remote-controlled plane, C4 explosives, and small arms that he allegedly envisioned using in a simultaneous ground assault in Washington.

However, ”the public was never in danger from the explosive devices, which were controlled by undercover FBI employees,” the FBI said.

Ferdaus was arrested in Framingham, near Boston, immediately after putting the newly delivered weapons into a storage container, the FBI said.

Authorities described Ferdaus as a physics graduate from Northeastern University who followed al-Qaeda and was committed to ”violent jihad” since early last year.

In November 2010, a similar “plot” was engineered, then “disrupted,” also by the FBI – this time in Portland, Oregon.

The so-called “Christmas Tree Bomber” attempted to remote detonate a van he believed was filled with explosives, provided by the FBI, before being arrested during a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The FBI’s official statement regarding the incident revealed that FBI agents had handled, even detonated live explosives with the entrapped suspect at Lincoln County Park in the lead up to the final failed bombing.
The FBI’s official statement titled, “Oregon Resident Arrested in Plot to Bomb Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Portland,” released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on November 26, 2010 stated (emphasis added):

According to the affidavit, on November 4, 2010, Mohamud and the undercover FBI operatives traveled to a remote location in Lincoln County, Ore., where they detonated a bomb concealed in a backpack as a trial run for the upcoming attack. Afterwards, on the drive back to Corvallis, undercover FBI operatives questioned Mohamud as to whether he was capable of looking at the bodies of those who would be killed in the upcoming attack in Portland. According to the affidavit, Mohamud responded, “I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured.”

Upon returning to Corvallis that same day, the affidavit alleges that Mohamud recorded a video of himself with the undercover FBI operatives in which he read a written statement that offered a rationale for his bomb attack. On Nov. 18, 2010, undercover FBI operatives picked up Mohamud to travel to Portland in order to finalize the details of the attack.

Earlier this evening, Mohamud was arrested after he attempted to remotely detonate what he believed to be explosives in a van that was parked near the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, the affidavit alleges.

Another similar operation was carried out by the FBI in February 2012, where yet another otherwise incapable patsy was  provided with live explosives in the lead up to what was ultimately a failed suicide bombing at the US Capitol. USA Today reported in their article, “FBI foils alleged suicide bomb attack on U.S. Capitol,” that (emphasis added):

According to a counterterrorism official, El Khalifi “expressed interest in killing at least 30 people and considered targeting a building in Alexandria and a restaurant, synagogue and a place where military personnel gather in Washington before he settled on the Capitol after canvassing that area a couple of times,” the Associated Press writes. During the year-long investigation, El Khalifi detonated explosives at a quarry in the capital region with undercover operatives. He is not believed to be affiliated with al-Qaeda, officials said.

Chicago justice: Clerk beats gun-toting robber with baseball bat

Store surveillance cameras captured the bold brawl at Quizhpe’s Gifts & Sports, in the Logan Square neighborhood, at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The robbers, one of them with a gun, apparently had no idea what they were in for when they walked into the shop.

“One of the guys, he said, ‘Give me the money or you are dead,’ and after that I was close to him and I tried to hit him with the bat, and the other guy he started shooting,” said Luis Aucaquizhpi.

Aucaquizhpi’s brother-in-law, 62-year-old Luis Quizphe, fended off the gunman with a baseball bat for a moment before the shooter tried to run away. Little did the robber know, however, that customers need to be buzzed in and out of the store. Seeing that they couldn’t get out, one of the attackers returned to the counter and continued shooting.

Hundreds of air-traffic control towers in the US are facing closure because of budget cuts. Without air traffic control towers, pilots will have to co-ordinate takeoffs and landings themselves. Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Chicago.

FAA Closing 149 Regional Airport Control Towers, 40 Others Spared

Towers closed

Towers remaining open

Washington (CNN/WIBW) — The FAA on Friday announced it will close 149 regional airport control towers because of forced spending cuts — sparing 40 others that the FAA had been expected to shutter.

Topeka’s Forbes Field tower was removed for an initial list slated to close, however six Kansas towers failed to be saves. Those include Billard Airport and Manhattan Regional Airport.

A four-week, phased closure of the 149 control towers will begin on April 7, the FAA said.

The FAA had been expected to announce the closure of 189 low- or moderate-volume towers staffed by contractors. Before Friday’s announcement, it said it would consider keeping a tower open if the airport convinces the agency it is in the “national interest” to do so.

By congressional mandate, the FAA must cut nearly $600 million from its nearly $48 billion budget this fiscal year. Because the majority of its 47,000 employees are air traffic controllers, it is impossible to cut its budget without affecting controllers, the agency says.

Once the initial list was revealed in late February, several airports made the case to keep their towers open. Sen. Jerry Moran says locations, such as Forbes and Manhattan, tried to make the point that, with the military air traffic they experienced, their operations were vital to national interests.

Forbes Field is home to the 190th Air Refueling Wing.

Statement from Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, regarding the FAA’s decisions:

“The Administration’s decision to shutter these air traffic control towers is short-sighted and dangerous,” Sen. Moran said. “Closing control towers is equivalent to removing stop lights and stop signs from our roads. It is clear that this Administration is putting its top-line message, that spending cannot be cut without severe consequences, before the safety and well-being of Americans.

Obama ‘Energy Security Trust’ Pushes Green Research And Natural Gas Development

President Barack Obama toured the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago on Friday and announced his plans for an “Energy Security Trust” to further clean energy research and development in the U.S.

The trust, which will be funded by federal royalties from offshore oil and gas drilling and not add to the budget deficit, will provide for $2 billion in research over the next 10 years. According to the White House, it will advance research into technologies like electric vehicle batteries, biofuels and hydrogen fuel cells.

Obama said on Friday at Argonne, “We have to keep investing in scientific research,” and lamented the impact of the federal budget sequester on U.S. research. “We cant afford to miss these opportunities while the rest of the world races forward,” the president argued.

Obama’s plan also funds natural gas research, furthering the president’s forthright support of an “all of the above” energy strategy and “responsibly tapping” U.S. natural gas reserves.

The president’s “Blueprint for a Clean and Secure Energy Future” advocates for “accelerating the growth” of natural gas in the transportation sector. Although increased utilization of natural gas is partially responsible for a decline in U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, significant leakage of methane — a shorter-lived but more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 — may negate environmental benefits over coal.

Obama’s “blueprint” also gives a nod to the coal industry with “significant funding for clean coal technology.” Carbon sequestration from coal-fired power plants has been called “mythical” by environmentalists, who have criticized Obama’s Energy secretary nominee, Ernest Moniz, for supporting the concept.

The president originally proposed the Energy Security Trust in his 2013 State of the Union address. “If a nonpartisan coalition of CEOs and retired generals and admirals can get behind this idea, then so can we,” he declared. “Let’s take their advice and free our families and businesses from the painful spikes in gas prices we’ve put up with for far too long.”
