Hackers send fake market-moving AP tweet on White House explosions

WASHINGTON | Tue Apr 23, 2013 5:32pm EDT

(Reuters) – Hackers took control of the Associated Press Twitter account on Tuesday and sent a false tweet about explosions in the White House that briefly sent U.S. financial markets reeling.

In the latest high-profile hacking incident involving social media service Twitter, an official @AP account reported that two explosions at the White House injured President Barack Obama.

AP spokesman Paul Colford quickly confirmed the tweet was “bogus,” and White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Obama was fine, just minutes after the tweet hit a little after 1 p.m. (1700 GMT).

But within 3 minutes of the tweet’s release, virtually all U.S. markets took a plunge on the false news in what one trader described as “pure chaos.”

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into the bogus tweet and its impact on the markets, SEC Commissioner Daniel Gallagher told Reuters in an interview.

“I can’t tell you exactly what the facts are at this point or what we are looking for, but for sure we want to understand major swings like that, however short it was,” Gallagher said.

Reuters data showed the tweet briefly wiped out $136.5 billion of the S&P 500 index’s value before markets recovered. Some traders attributed the sharp fall and bounce-back to automatic electronic trading.

At a time when cybersecurity and hacking have become top national security concerns, Twitter and its reach to hundreds of millions of users is coming under growing scrutiny for the risk of privacy breaches on the site.

A group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army, which is supportive of that country’s leader, President Bashar al-Assad, during the two-year civil war, claimed responsibility on Tuesday on its own Twitter feed for the AP hack.

The group has in the past taken credit for similar invasions into Twitter accounts of National Public Radio, BBC, CBS’s “60 Minutes” program and Reuters News.

A Twitter spokesman declined to comment on the Tuesday breach, saying the company did not comment “on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons.” An FBI representative had no immediate comment.

“There’s plenty of blame to go around,” said Stewart Baker, a cybersecurity lawyer at Steptoe & Johnson in Washington. “AP should have had better passwords, Twitter should have gone to at least optional two-factor authentication months ago, and guys on the Street really should be thinking twice before they trade on Twitter reports. That’s risky.”

For years, security experts have called on Twitter to introduce a two-factor authentication measure, which requires a two-step process to log in and which they say would greatly reduce such breaches.

Syrian Electronic Army Takes Credit for AP Hack

Tweet claimed Obama was injured in White House attack

A group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army appears to be taking credit for hacking The Associated Press Twitter account and sending out a fake tweet claiming President Obama was injured in an explosion.

The group claimed responsibility by tweeting the following: “Ops! @AP get owned by Syrian Electronic Army! #SEA #Syria #ByeByeObama pic.twitter.com/HTKoO6gIL6.” Being “owned” is the vernacular in the hacker world for a successful attack.

Linked to the tweet was also a photo of AP’s Twitter banner having been replaced by a Syrian Electronic Army graphic.

The Associated Press Twitter account generated some brief shock waves on Tuesday afternoon, when it sent out a tweet at 1:07 p.m. describing an explosion at the White House. “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”

The Associated Press confirmed the tweet was fake and their account had been hacked.

Fake AP tweet latest hacking claimed by pro-Assad ‘army’

A tweet by the nation’s largest newswire about a catastrophe at the White House was nearly immediately shot down as false on Tuesday.

By Emily AlpertApril 23, 2013, 2:08 p.m.

A fake tweet that claimed President Obama had been injured after explosions went off at the White House was quickly debunked by the Associated Press, which said its Twitter account had been hacked.

But a band of hackers who support Syrian President Bashar Assad crowed that they had sent Americans into a tizzy.

“This small tweet created some chaos in the United States in addition to a decline in some U.S. stocks,” the Syrian Electronic Army wrote on its website, referring to a brief, steep drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It claimed credit for hijacking both @AP and @AP_Mobile.

Overtaking the news agency on Twitter is the latest in a long string of attacks for which the group has claimed credit. The hackers pledge allegiance to Assad and call the rebellion against his government “an armed insurrection that seeks to lead Syria into a dreadful anarchy.”

Online, the group has waged a cyber war parallel to the real and deadly battles in the streets of Syria, harassing groups that back rebels and media outlets it sees as biased.

Earlier this week, the Syrian Electronic Army claimed to have hacked Twitter accounts for FIFA, the world soccer federation, and its president, Joseph Blatter. The organization has been trying to fend off allegations that Qatar – which backs Syrian rebels – bribed officials in order to host the 2022 World Cup.

Did Anonymous Hack Israel’s Mossad Spy Agency?

The hackivists at Anonymous, along with Turkish and other hackers, are claiming they hacked into Israel‘s Mossad spy agency. More specifically, Turkish group Red Hack claims to have stolen the names, locations, phone numbers and email addresses of 30,000 Mossad agents, while Sector 404 launched a distributed denial of service (DDOS) to paralyze Mossad’s Web site. The leaked documents can be found here.

As of Sunday evening, Mossad’s Web site (or at least the English-language page) appears to be functioning. Naturally, the Israeli government is denying that any vital information was compromised. But one doesn’t have to be a master spy like George Smiley  to note a few inconsistencies in the claims of Anonymous.

First, if you look at the list of leaked names (some are translated from Hebrew into English), most have Israeli email addresses and live in Israeli towns. It appears a tad unlikely that a deep-cover Mossad agent in Tehran sends cute Persian cat photos on his Israeli email account. And as an analyst pointed out to the Times of Israel, some of the listings are for Israeli businesses such as auto parts stores or food companies, thus suggesting that at least some of the names are just plain old government contractors. I did Google some of the email addresses, and in one case, I found that the owner was listed as a participant in a conference in Israel of international Jewish activists. Not exactly a subtle cover for Shlomo Bond, Double-Oy-Seven.

Ars asks and Comcast obliges, giving us copies of Alerts 1, 2, 4, and 5.

by – Feb 27 2013, 7:12pm CST

Earlier this week, the Copyright Alert System (CAS)—better known as “six strikes”—finally debuted. Both Verizon and Comcast activated the service on Wednesday.

The new system is funded by a group known as the Center for Copyright Information (CCI), which is made up of five major American ISPs, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It’s been in the works for years and may provide a significant change to the copyright infringement policing regime in the United States.

At the end of a series of six alerts, accused infringing customers could have their home Internet connection significantly slowed down. Those accused of infringing can file an appeal for $35. (Here’s the CCI’s new video explaining the process, as well as its new promo video.)

Both Verizon and Comcast updated their terms of service as of Wednesday, and each informed customers of their participation in six strikes on their websites. (But more than likely, most customers don’t spend much time checking out the corporate homepages of their ISPs.) Ars has reached out to all five of the participating ISPs—AT&T, Verizon, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, and Comcast. Only the latter responded and agreed to provide copies of actual alerts. (Full disclosure: I am a Comcast customer.)

Charlie Douglas, a Comcast spokesperson, also told Ars that the company already sent out a “small number” of alerts despite this being the first day of Comcast’s compliance. Douglas declined to disclose the actual number or the reason that number was being kept secret.

When Ars asked him to confirm that six strikes would not be able to see a potential violation if the user was using a VPN, he responded: “I think you’re right.”

Douglas did provide the language for alerts numbered one, two, four, and five. He has not yet responded concerning why Comcast is unable to provide the actual language for all six alerts or why he chose these particular ones to share with Ars. Comcast has also not shared any technical details of how it serves up an in-browser pop-up alert.

Numero uno

Here’s “Copyright Alert! #1”:

There are a few things we noticed after reading through these alerts.

The notice refers to a comcast.net e-mail address. Prior to updating some information on my own account earlier this month, I’ve never seen any messages sent to that account. I didn’t even know that I had it. Apparently I’m not the only one.

“I will note, just as a single data point, that I’m sure that I personally have a comcast.net e-mail account and that I have no idea what it is,” Sherwin Siy told Ars. He’s the vice president of legal affairs at the advocacy group Public Knowledge and also a residential Comcast customer in Washington, DC.

“Were I to receive one of these notices, a lot of my time would likely be spent trying to figure that information out so I could know what I was actually being accused of,” he added.

Comcast’s Douglas also told Ars that all alerts were communicated via e-mail to users’ comcast.net e-mail address and via an in-browser pop-up. That could suggest that if a Comcast user maintains a constant VPN connection and doesn’t check their Comcast e-mail account, they could plausibly say that they never received any alerts.

The alert refers to a URL redirecting to a post titled “New Copyright Alert System.”

Military Industrial Complex Goes Back to the Well to Use What Has Worked on Us Before – FEAR !!!

Jim W. Dean, VT Editor    with    Press TV

________________________________________

The United States is exaggerating the threat of cyber attacks because it has funded a “massive surveillance campaign” both at home and abroad, says Jim W Dean, managing editor and columnist at Veterans Today.

“It’s [the U.S. government] basically funded a massive surveillance campaign not only against people overseas and all the incoming phone calls, emails, Skypes and whatever they monitor, but they also have a massive domestic surveillance program in place,” Dean said in an interview Monday.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich) said on Sunday that the United States is losing the cyberwar with the Chinese government.

Rogers’ comments came after a recent report detailed 140 cyber attacks on U.S. targets that are believed to have originated in China.

The irony in U.S. accusations against China and other nations with regard to the so-called cyber warfare, according to Dean, is that “America is really the one that has started this.”

Dean also criticized the U.S. government for concealing from the American public the Israeli cyber warfare inside their country.

“One thing they never tell the American people about is one of the key aspects of the Israeli intelligence operations here is monitoring phone calls, communications, [and] computers” to gain access to “trade secrets, military secrets and blackmail information,” he noted.

“The Israeli threat is much, much bigger than anything from China or Russia,” Dean concluded.

[Editors Note:  Admist all the Cyber Warfaer hype, the Israeli threat was completely censored out, by government, media, and the official intelligence community. We have another 'stand down' situation.]

“Something old – with something new

A terror attack on America is in motion as I write. Defense contractors all over America are deploying their March 1st human shields.

If contractors like the cyber warfare hustlers don’t get their money, we are all doomed. They are going to Samson Option us all.

After the US leading the world in cyber war development and stimulating those we have targeted to increase their own capabilities, this is now spun as ‘they are attacking us.’

And like the nuclear weapons that the Israelis don’t have, and the espionage operations they do not run here, we can now add to that list the cyber warfare that they don’t do. This is how our leaders protect us.

My instincts tell me they feel the sun is setting on their Iran attack plans so they have to replace that with something very expensive like the threat of a Pearl Harbor like cyber attack from the likes of China, Russia and Iran… but not Israel, even though Israel already has.

That’s right folks, after hours of reviewing dozens of past articles and YouTubes, sometimes listening to some really silly stuff, never once were Israel’s extensive cyber war operations mentioned.

The ‘pay up or die’ cyber war scam has been played on us before. The first big push came in 2010 with the November 60 Minutes TV show. The 2007 cyber attack on DC… the Pentagon, State Dept, NSA and others, where terabytes of classified information were taken, served as the trigger.

But it also showed a huge failure on our part. Someone on the inside showed someone on the outside how to get in. Gosh, I wonder who?

It is claimed that we still don’t know who did it. But many of the top ‘War on Terror’ people from the Bush administration just happen to be major players with the big cyber warfare contractors now, and still good friends with the Israelis. So the bill was passed in 2010 and Americans began paying for having themselves monitored along with everybody else.

Going forward to February of 2012, there was some pushback to the beltway bandits as they are called, so they brought out their big guns. From FBI director Robert Mueller we had, “The cyber threat will equal or surpass the threat from counter terrorism.” Leon Panetta from the CIA was next with, “The next Pearl Harbor we confront could very well be a cyber attack that cripples our power systems.”

The one button image is hype – a visual tie in to a nuclear launch

Cyber security had changed since the 2010 days. Jim Harper of the CATO institute said in 2012 that there was no chance whatsoever that nuclear power plants would be hacked or electrical infrastructure taken down.“The worst we would have is a disruption, and that is not terror, or a war.”

And from Congress we had Mike Rogers, Republican from Michigan, reading from his prepared script, “An attack is on its way… we will suffer a catastrophic attack…”

Gosh, I wonder if he is an AIPAC man. Remember that Israel was still pushing hard at this time for a bomb attack on Iran’s IAEA-approved nuclear facilities.

This year the big guns are still some of the old faces. Ex-Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff who we hear is also an Israeli citizen has his own cyber warfare consulting company.

He left government work early to get on the War on Terror bonanza. As director he had even flown over to Israel to put on ‘fast track’ seminars for Israeli contractors. They got their pick of those wonderful communications contracts they were looking for, where they would have back door access to spy on America for many years to come.

Former Admiral and National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell is Exec. VP of Booz Allen’s cyber security division, and making good use of his former insider contacts.

Israel launches cyber-warfare programme

Israel Herald (IANS) Tuesday 1st January, 2013

Israel will train teenagers on cyber-warfare to prepare them for their future role in the military and intelligence community.

“The threat of cyber attacks against Israel comes from Iran and other elements,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the launch of the cyber-warfare program.

“Our vital systems are targets for attack, and this will only increase as we enter the digital age.

“We are bolstering our ability to deal with these threats and are building a digital Iron Dome,” he said at Ashkelon.

The Israel National Cyber Bureau will run the three-year program to develop expertise in cybernetics and computers among outstanding high school students, Xinhua reported.

Cyber security has become a national priority in Israel, with significant resources being invested in protecting the military and civilian computing networks.
