The House of Representatives authorized a suspension of the nation’s debt limit through mid-May, delaying a default on the government’s obligations that would have taken effect in February.
The House of Representatives has passed the extension of the US debt limit to May 19 with a vote of 285 to 144. The measure moves on to the Senate for final passage. MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports.
The GOP-controlled House voted 285 to 144 to comfortably pass a three-month extension in the government’s borrowing authority just as Senate Democratic leaders suggested they would take up and pass the legislation as soon as they could.
The vote early Wednesday afternoon by the House would forestall a default on the national debt. The Treasury Department had warned that the government would exhaust its authority to borrow to finance its existing obligations by the middle of February.
The bill, which Republican leaders unveiled last week, would suspend the debt limit through May 18 and require both the House and the Senate to produce and pass a budget resolution in the meanwhile, with a deadline of April 15. If either chamber fails to pass a budget, its pay would be put into escrow – “No Budget, No Pay” goes the newly-minted Republican slogan to describe this strategy.

stop spending money you don’t have … is very simple. get back to your borders and stay out of foreign countries who don’t want your flavor of liberation, save tons of money, like 631 billion usd
If they did that they would not receive those fat checks they receive from their friends the lobbyists. To change the status quo is to end their little racket, period! In the meantime the working class foots the bill for their extravagant lifestyles and then we get dumped on and lectured on sacrifice for the good of the Nation. Pffffttttt!!
while the Prez lives like King in White House, how did this come about that presidents are treated like royalty?, seriously it’s a bunch of crap and unneeded extravagance
Well, his defenders or apologists as I call them say he deserves his million dollar vacations. They have even gone as far as to say that it is his due even when it is Michelle who travels with the children to Hawaii or abroad and take an entourage of secret service and personnel with them costing the tax payers millions.
Now be it far from me to say that he should not de-stress a s I understand the responsibilities are great.
However, can he truly justify the sheer amount of trips he and his family take both together and separately? Especially when they are asking the American people to sacrifice? It seems to me the Administration and government in general have elevated themselves to a level of Monarchy to a certain extent. Making us the serfs and subjects I suppose.
It is unreal how detached from reality these people have become. It is also rather troubling that they believe the gravy train will go on forever. America is hurting and they are so far removed from the picture that they are unable to reconcile the sacrifices that must be made by ALL not just the working class. It is a frightening thought that these are the people that control our Nation and hold it’s future in their very hands.
well said, and i don’t care if he needs to “de stress”, join the rest of the world in stress, and no taxpayers pay our vacations
I’m serious. Why can’t he run or work out on a treadmill like everyone else???
exactly, i can’t remember how many years it has been since i have been able to afford a vacation and i am sure i am not alone
I know what you mean.
I have not been able to take a vacation in 10 years. No we are not alone there are so many people who have been struggling for years. All we get is ,” it will get worse before it gets better and for now we must sacrifice to get our Nation through this”.
I understand the need for sacrifice. But not when it is we who sacrifice and they who maintain the status quo as if nothing has changed
