Dow’s pesticide Dursban was banned for home use, but continues to be sprayed on our food despite horrific health threats.

Endocrine disruptors, synthetic chemicals that mimic and interfere with natural hormones, lurk everywhere from canned foods and microwave popcorn bags to cosmetics and carpet-cleaning solutions. The chemicals, which include pesticides, fire retardants and plastics, are in thermal store receipts, antibacterial detergents and toothpaste (like Colgate’s Total with triclosan) and the plastic BPA which Washington state banned in baby bottles. Endocrine disruptors are linked to breast cancer, infertility, low sperm counts, genital deformities, early puberty and diabetes in humans and alarming mutations in wildlife. They are also suspected in the epidemic of behavior and learning problems in children which has coincided, many say, with wide endocrine disruptor use.

Like Big Pharma, Big Chem holds tremendous sway at the FDA, which gave the endocrine disruptor BPA a pass in March, citing “serious questions“about the applicability of damning animal studies to humans. But in April, research from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences presented new evidence of the ability of endocrine disruptors–in this case the pesticide, chlorpyrifos–to harm developing fetuses. Janette Sherman, a pesticide expert and toxicologist, has studied the effects of chlorpyrifos (found in Dow’s pesticide Dursban) for many years and spoke with AlterNet about what her research has revealed.

Martha Rosenberg: Published studies, including your own, signaled safety problems with Dursban years ago. The EPA’s own data found eight out of 10 adults and nine of 10 children had “measurable concentrations.” Dow paid a $2 million penalty for hiding Dursban’s risks from 1995 and 2003 in New York. But the pesticide was not banned for residential use until 2000, and after it was banned, people were allowed to use remaining quantities. Why did the cases that you and others uncovered seem to have little effect?

Janette Sherman: Dow attorneys took my deposition for four eight-hour days in the mid-1990s and I supplied over 10,000 pages of medical records, depositions, EPA documents, patent information and toxicology studies on which I based my opinion. Even though genetic analyses were conducted for the paper and genetic causes for the defects were ruled out–siblings who were not exposed to chlorpyrifos, for example, were normal–Dow termed the cases genetic and was able to stop most, if not all, chlorpyrifos birth-defect suits.

Dow has almost unlimited money and personnel to fight families and small-town attorneys and they send multiple personnel to the EPA to argue their side. There is also no penalty for withholding information.

MR: Dow claimed there was insufficient proof of chlorpyrifos exposure.

JS: Yes and one of the ironies, that I have cited in several papers, is that monitoring data for pesticide levels, either at the time of application or at the time of birth, is simply not done. People have no records and no way of collecting records of pesticides they have been exposed to.

MR: Lorsban, the agricultural version of Dursban, is still widely in use in crops like applescorn, soybeans, wheat, nuts, grapes, citrus and other fruit and vegetables. Virginia Rauh, the author of the recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper cautioned pregnant women to seek organic produce to avoid chlorpyrifos.

JS: I believe farm workers and pregnant women are at risk and obviously, a pesticide that is used widely in crops will also get in the drinking water. I don’t know how widespread chlorpyrifos use is overseas and in poor countries but the same risks apply.

High protein, low carbohydrate diet increases heart disease risk in women

Natural News.ccom

by: John Phillip

(NaturalNews) Very few topics elicit more controversy and differing points of view than those pertaining to dietary ratios of carbohydrates, proteins and fats and how they pertain to optimal health. Nutrition science indicates that the answer to this dilemma is far from clear, and is most likely determined by individual body metabolism as predicated by evolved genetics and hereditary patterns. Yet, virtually all scientists would agree that highly processed and refined carbohydrates and excessive calories from animal protein contribute to chronic illnesses, especially cardiovascular disease in some at-risk individuals.

Researchers publishing in the British Medical Journal have determined that women who regularly eat a low carbohydrate, high protein diet are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease (such as heart disease and stroke) than those who do not. The study found that women consuming the highest amount of protein (from animal sources) coupled with low carbohydrates had a 28 percent increased risk of cardiovascular disease, an alarming statistic given the popularity of Atkins-based and other similar dietary programs in younger women.

Low carbohydrate, high protein diets are quite prevalent as they produce rapid body weight control results in many adopters of the dietary lifestyle. Nutrition experts recommend substituting proteins from nuts and seeds for animal-based sources and drastically limiting carbohydrates from unhealthy sweeteners, drinks and snacks to achieve a nutritionally sound intake of macronutrients. In practice, many people do not heed this advice and can endanger their health as a consequence.

Low carbohydrate, high protein dietary pattern more than doubles heart disease risk

To conduct the study, researchers examined a cohort of nearly 44,000 Swedish women, aged 30 to 49 years with an average follow up of 15 years. Women completed a detailed dietary and lifestyle questionnaire to determine the ratio of high protein to low carbohydrate foods consumed. The dietary patterns were then plotted on a scale from 2 (high carbohydrate, low protein) to 20 (low carbohydrate, high protein). Influential factors such as smoking, alcohol use, hypertension, activity level and fat intake were taken into account when determining the patterns.

During the 15-year study period, 1,270 cardiovascular events took place in the 43,396 women (55 percent ischemic heart disease, 23 percent ischemic stroke, 6 percent hemorrhagic stroke, 10 percent subarachnoid hemorrhage and 6 percent peripheral arterial disease). Researchers found that cardiovascular disease incidence increased by 13 percent for women with a score from seven to nine (higher carbohydrate, lower protein intake), to 23 percent for those with a score from 10 to 12, to 54 percent for those with a score from 13 to 15 (lower carbohydrate, higher protein intake), and to 60 percent for those with a score of 16 or higher.

The study team authors concluded that a low carbohydrate, high protein diet “used on a regular basis and without consideration of the nature of carbohydrates or the source of proteins are associated with increased cardiovascular risk.” It is important to note that this research did not find an increase in disease risk when the protein source was derived from nuts, seeds or vegetables. The study confirms the importance of a diet comprised of natural foods from organic sources with a balance toward carbohydrates from slow-releasing vegetables and fruits and moderate intake of proteins in the form of nuts and seeds to lower cardiovascular disease risk.

Support the Declaration of Internet Freedom

by: J. D. Heyes

internet

(NaturalNews) An alliance of groups who advocate for freedom and privacy have joined to push U.S. lawmakers into acknowledging so-called digital rights of all Americans by signing a new Declaration of Internet Freedom.

The declaration, which has been supported by groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, features five simple principles (not 2,700 for keeping a free and open Internet. They are:

Expression: Don’t censor the Internet.

Access: Promote universal access to fast and affordable networks.

Openness: Keep the Internet an open network where everyone is free to connect, communicate, write, read, watch, speak, listen, learn, create and innovate.

Innovation: Protect the freedom to innovate and create without permission. Don’t block new technologies, and don’t punish innovators for their users’ actions.

Privacy: Protect privacy and defend everyone’s ability to control how their data and devices are used.

The EFF, in a statement, said support for the effort was a vital part of its strategy, and the strategy of others, to keep lawmakers in the U.S. and around the world out of the business of regulating the Internet.

An election issue

“For too long in the U.S., Congress has attempted to legislate the Internet in favor of big corporations and heavy-handed law enforcement at the expense of its users’ basic Constitutional rights,” the statement said. “Netizens’ strong desire to keep the Internet open and free has been brushed aside as naive and inconsequential, in favor of lobbyists and special interest groups. Well, no longer.

The statement referenced an earlier effort by concerned groups and citizens to halt an onerous piece of Internet regulation known as the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA. As is usually the case, the bill seemed reasonable: help protect electronic copyrights. But in reality, what it would have done was allow broad censorship across the wide, wide Web, and led to a dampening of innovation while threatening Internet security. At one point, its passage was considered a foregone conclusion by the industry, but a grassroots uprising stopped the bill cold.

“Why were Internet users so empowered for the first time? For one reason, Internet freedom now affects virtually all of the American public – young and old – given the web’s importance to everyone’s daily life,” the EFF said, noting that the uproar was bipartisan – groups and elected officials on both sides of the political aisle banded together to stop SOPA.

The group, as well as others who have signed on, believe that now, Internet freedom has become “an election issue, and candidates for elected office must treat it as such.”

Though freedom lovers got a victory in the SOPA – and subsequent – legislative failures, the assault on controlling the World Wide Web continues. And, in fact, most observers think it has actually accelerated.

More attempts to regulate coming

In fact, the bills are actually being recycled into newer versions of the same thing – and shelved, for the time being, until backers feel the political climate is right to reintroduce them.

Former U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, who became head of the Motion Picture Association after he left office, told the Washington Reporter in April he was “confident” about conversations between Hollywood and Silicon Valley to revive SOPA.

“Between now and sometime next year [after the presidential election], the two industries need to come to an understanding,” he said, mysteriously.

When asked if that meant negotiations were proceeding apace, Dodd said, ” I’m confident that’s the case, but I’m not going to go into more detail because obviously if I do, it becomes counterproductive.”

Moreover, federal agencies – including the FBI – want current laws changed or expanded in order to allow more monitoring and wiretapping of the Web.

All of which proves the point that defense of freedom requires eternal vigilance.

London, (ANI): Chillies battle the bulge in three ways by burning fat, suppressing hunger pangs, and boosting overall calorie-burning rates, it has been revealed.

Tests by food scientist Stephen Whiting, who is based at Manchester Metropolitan University, proved that chillies “key component” – the chemical capsaicin that gives them heat, triggers an adrenalin rush.

This orders the brain specifically to burn fat cells, and tests found fat around the belly was burned most rapidly.

Midriff fat is the most dangerous, as it increases the risk of heart disease.

Whiting found chillies also helped to suppress appetite, plus they speeded up the body’s overall metabolism, the rate at which a person burns off calories.

“If you eat chillies consistently for a good period of time, it will help you lose weight,” the Sun quoted Whiting as saying. (ANI)

Washington, July 8 (ANI): People with fructose malabsorption – a food intolerance that is as complicated as it is common – are turning to low FODMAP diet, which stands for six sugars, to tackle the condition.

The diet restricts most fruits, many vegetables, wheat, some dairy and other everyday foods such as honey.

Usually described as ”fructose intolerance”, but often extending to malabsorption of other sugars, scientists believe the condition could affect almost half of the 15 per cent of Australians with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and be the prime trigger of symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and pain.

Diagnosis is confirmed by a breath-test, and the number of specialist diagnostic centres in Melbourne has risen since 1999 from one to an estimated 18.

Jackie Love, a 44-year-old French teacher, claimed her painful and socially awkward IBS symptoms have disappeared after following FODMAP diet and she’s not alone.

Love can eat bananas but not apples. Beans but not snow peas. Gluten but not wheat.

”I really have to look at every single thing I put in my mouth,” said Love.

The diet, which was developed in Melbourne by dietitian Dr Sue Shepherd in 1999 and later proved effective by Dr Shepherd and Monash University, has spawned a thriving local industry.

”There are lots of diets being promoted … but this is one where we know why it works,” the Age quoted Dr Shepherd as saying.

Her annual patient list has soared from 100 to 4000 in 13 years (about 80per cent of whom are being treated with the FODMAP diet) and she also publishes cookbooks, consults overseas and conducts supermarket tours and information sessions for chefs.

One of her patients, Natalie Nott, said ”FODMAPs has really changed everything.”

Relieved of her irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, last year she self-published the Low Fodmap Cookbook, which has sold about 600 copies, and has 1000 subscribers to her blog.

She says dining out is still difficult, but restaurants such as Fox in the Box, in Hampton, and The Firehouse, in Ringwood, now cater specifically for FODMAPs.

Food companies Naturally Good and Simply Wise include a ”fructose-friendly” label on relevant products.

Dr Shepherd says better diagnosis of fructose malabsorption has made the condition seem more prevalent, although some speculate that increased fructose in our diets, particularly from high- fructose corn syrup in many processed foods, is also to blame.

But Australian Medical Association president Steve Hambleton said the incorrect perception of food allergies and intolerances was also on the rise, and warned that the FODMAP diet should only be used under professional guidance.

”You need to go to a GP first to make sure you don’t have a serious, treatable medical condition – especially one of the inflammatory bowel diseases,” he said.

”There is an objective increase in recognised food intolerance s, But there’s probably an equal number of people who think they’re intolerant or allergic without robust reason,” he added. (ANI)

Heat Wave in USA on Sunday, 08 July, 2012 at 11:40 (11:40 AM) UTC.

Description
Americans in much of the country on Sunday will get a slight break from temperatures that were near or above the 100 a day earlier. But for many, the cooler temperatures won’t exactly be comfortable – they’ll fall only into the 90s. Cooler air is sweeping southward in the eastern half of the country on Sunday, bringing down some temperatures by 15 degrees or more from Saturday’s highs. In St. Louis, the 13-degree drop from Saturday’s high still will leave residents baking in 93-degree weather – the high Saturday was a record 106. Temperatures in Philadelphia, Washington, and Indianapolis will fall to the low 90s or upper 80s on Sunday after crossing the 100 mark on Saturday. Residents in Louisville, Ky., can expect a high of 95 after 105-degree temperatures Saturday. For many areas, the cooler temperatures were ushered in by thunderstorms that knocked out power to thousands of electricity customers.

The heat also is blamed for more than 30 deaths across the country. A 4-month-old girl died and a 16-month-old girl was hospitalized Saturday in separate incidents in suburban Indianapolis when both were found trapped in cars during near-record 105-degree heat. Residents from Iowa to New Jersey spent Saturday trying to stay cool. They dipped into the water, went to the movies and rode the subway just to be in air conditioning. If people ventured outside to do anything, they did it early. But even then, the heat was stifling. “It was baking on the 18th green,” said golfer Zeb Rogerson, who teed off at 6 a.m. at an Alexandria, Va., golf course but was sweltering by the end of his round. Officials said the heat caused highways to buckle in Illinois and Wisconsin. In Maryland, investigators said heat likely caused rails to kink and led a Metro train to partially derail in Prince George’s County on Friday afternoon. No one was injured, and 55 passengers were safely evacuated. Micah Straight, 36, brought his three daughters to dance in jets of water spurting from a “sprayground” near Philadelphia’s Logan Square fountain to cool off.

“We got here early, because I don’t think we’ll be out this afternoon – we’ll be in the air conditioning,” he said. “So I wanted to get them out, get some sunshine, get tired.” In South Bend, Ind., serious kayakers Saturday took to the East Race Waterway, a 1,900-foot long manmade whitewater course near downtown. “A lot of times I’ll roll over just to cool off,” said Robert Henry of Carmel, just north of Indianapolis. “The biggest challenge is walking coming back up carrying a kayak three-eighths of a mile in this heat.” In Manhattan, customers who stepped in to see “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” at an IFC movie theater were there for more than entertainment. “Of course we came to cool off!” said John Villanova, a writer who was on his second sweaty T-shirt of the day – expecting to change again by evening. He said that earlier, he rode a Manhattan subway back and forth for a half an hour, with no destination in mind, “because it really keeps you cool.”

One man figured out a way to beat the heat: stay in the car. Roger Sinclair of Batavia, Ill., was headed home Saturday from Detroit, where he’d spent a few days visiting an old friend and catching Friday night’s Tigers game. The Tigers won 4-2, but the conditions were less than ideal. “It was 97 at the first pitch and still in the 80s at the time of the last out,” he said. “It was tough. There was no breeze.” Sinclair said he had been spending hours in his air-conditioned car to stay out the worst of the heat. In Chicago, street magician Jeremy Pitt-Payne said he has been working throughout the three-day stretch of triple-digit temperatures, but acknowledged that he might doff the Union Jack leather vest by the end of the day, even though it’s part of his British magician character along with the black top hat.

Description
A tornado hit a building in Fredericksburg this evening as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. The roof of one building reportedly flew off and hit a home about 40 yards away on Fleming Street. “It started hailing golfball-sized hail and then the lights went out,” said Mandy Spina, the director of Cheer Fusion gym at 86 Fleming St. “It was torrential downpour, and I told the kids to get into the dance room because it is steel re-inforced. Bricks started flying and the walls caved in.”

Tornado in USA on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 03:22 (03:22 AM) UTC.

Description
The Free-Lance Star reported that Spotsylvania fire and rescue authorities said “what appeared to be a tornado touched down off Lafayette Boulevard in Spotsylvania County this afternoon, collapsing two buildings …” Asst. Chief Mark Kuechler with the Spotsylvania Fire Department told the Free-Lance Star that the most significant damage was on Lafayette Boulevard and Route 1. Cheer Fusion, which Kuechler said was made of mostly concrete blocks, collapsed and suffered some of the most significant damage in the area. Kuechler said that there was a cheerleading practice hosted inside when the building collapsed and that “miraculously they all made it out.” There were seven minor injuries. Four were transported to the Mary Washington hospital with non-life threatening injuries and there were three refusals for medical help. A private residence collapsed from the blown debris of Cheer Fusion. There was a gentlemen in the home who was uninjured said Kuechler. Kuechler said that most of the buildings nearby were affected by straight-line wind damage.

Mandy Spina, the director of Cheer Fusion said that golf-ball sized hail fell, and that there was no visibility due to heavy rain. Spina said that the kids were practicing on the main dance floor room when the storm hit. She told the Free-Lance Star that there were 14 cheerleaders, ages 11 to 18, in the facility for a practice when the storm hit. She said that a coach and about 10 parents also were there. She said that one of the father’s suggested they move to a separate steel-reinforced room just off of the main dance room. She said that after the storm passed they opened the door of the dance studio to find nothing left. Jared Klein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sterling office, told the Free-Lance Star that based on a description of the damage, he said it sounded more like a microburst than a tornado. He said that official won’t confirm if it was a tornado until they can inspect the damaged area or scrutinize photographs of the event. The storms drastically reduced weather temperatures, by about 32 degrees. The weather station at the University of Mary Washington reported a high of 100 degrees at 3:16 p.m. After the storm, the thermometer dropped 32 degrees to 68 just before 6 p.m.

Description
The death toll rose to at least 150 today from severe flooding in southern Russia that turned streets into rivers, swept away bridges, and inundated thousands of homes as many residents were sleeping. President Vladimir Putin flew to the Black Sea region and ordered investigators to determine whether more could have been done to prevent the deaths. Torrential rains dropped up to a foot of water in less than 24 hours, which the state meteorological service said was five times the monthly average. The water rushed into the hard-hit town of Krymsk with such speed and volume early yesterday that residents said they suspected that water had been released from a reservoir in the mountains above. Local officials denied this, saying it was not possible to open the sluices. Federal investigators, however, acknowledged today that water had been released, but insisted it did not cause the flooding. The Interior Ministry said today that 150 bodies had been recovered, 139 of them in Krymsk and nine in Gelendzhik. The majority of the dead were elderly who were unable to escape.

Destroyed & Devastated: Russia grieves in wake of tsunami-like flood

Published on Jul 7, 2012 by

Flash floods in Russia’s Krasnodar region struck unexpectedly as thousands woke up to a nightmare. While they were asleep, their lives and the people they loved were being washed away. Emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors after devastating floods killed over one hundred and forty people in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar. The disaster, caused by torrential rains, swamped thousands of houses. There are warnings the rain will continue throughout Sunday. RT’s Tom Barton has more on what’s going on in the affected areas right now. And RT’s Denis Bolotsky reports on how the events unfolded from Friday night when the disaster hit.

A month’s amount of rain falls in hours/Worst floods in decades hits Russia! (July 7, 2012)

At least 171 people have been killed in a devastating flood in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region. It’s the worst of its kind in nearly a century, and the death toll continues to rise.

Some 479 people, 48 children among them, have sought medical aid following the flood. Almost 3,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster area.

More than 24,000 people have been affected by the disaster. A state of emergency has been declared in the cities of Krymsk, Novorossiysk, and Gelendzhik. In total 159 bodies have been recovered so far in Krymsk, ten in Gelendzhik and two in Novorossiysk.

Deputy Minister of the Interior Aleksandr Gorovoy said that the search for bodies continued as there are still two people unaccounted for. Also, he voiced fears that more people could be missing.

The flood was part of the aftermath of a giant storm that hit Krasnodar, dropping almost half a year’s rainfall on the region over two days. The weather forecast promises more heavy rains and squally wind to hit the region by night.

The most heavily affected areas are along the Russian Black Sea coast, which bore the brunt of the deluge as it rushed out to sea.

A day of mourning will be held across Russia on July 9 to commemorate the victims of the flood.

‘A wall of water’ in Krymsk

Krymsk has been affected worst of all as the deluge engulfed it overnight, tearing through the city and leaving a trail of desolation in its wake. Witnesses reported buildings destroyed and trucks and other vehicles being overturned.

One driver said his truck was literally carried tens of meters by the deluge. In a separate incident, a ten-year-old girl was ripped from her mother and sister’s arms by the force of the current.

“This is not just rain or a downpour, this is a catastrophe. There was a wall of water, it was difficult to breath,” wrote an eyewitness on a social networking site.

People desperately tried to escape the advancing deluge, fleeing to higher ground and taking refuge on the roofs of buildings.

In the city of Gelendzhik, workers at a kindergarten managed to get children onto the second floor of the building just in time before the waters hit. While one woman in Krymsk reportedly spent six hours on top of a gas oven to escape the rising waters.

Five people in Gelendzhik were electrocuted to death after a wire fell into the water. A man trying to cross a puddle next to a store on Kerchenskaya Street was the first to receive fatal injuries. Two women and another man rushed to help him, but were also killed by the electric current. A third man later approached the four bodies, and was himself electrocuted to death, his body carried away by the oncoming flood waters.

Local authorities say a large part of the casualties were pensioners unable to escape from their homes when the floodwaters struck.

Shelter from the storm

The Governor of the Krasnodar region Aleksandr Tkachyov surveyed the damage in the Gelendzhik and Krymsky districts from a helicopter as early as Saturday morning in order to estimate repairs, sending updates on the situation via Twitter.

“The scale of it is spectacular, to be sure, and very tragic. The water came with such force that it tore up the asphalt,” the governor wrote on Saturday.

Locals say that sewage systems are down and phone networks in the region are working intermittently.

Fourteen temporary shelters have been set up in Krymsk to house around 2,000 people, who “are receiving food, drinking water and medicine,” Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said. She added that a special team had been deployed in the area to attend to the needs of the evacuated.

Emergencies Ministry rescue teams and helicopters have been dispatched to the Krasnodar Region in order to join the rescue and repair efforts already underway there. Over 10,000 rescue officers and 140 helicopters are currently working at the scene.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as well as Emergency Minister Vladimir Puchkov and the Minister of Regional Development Oleg Govorun have visited the affected area.

Furthermore, Russia’s Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova arrived on Sunday in the Krasnodar Region. She is assessing the full impact of the tragedy and the situation in the shelters housing evacuees from the flood zone.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal probe into the tragedy on the grounds of negligence.

Children’s summer camps evacuated

Authorities in the Perm region of Russia dispatched their own rescue team to evacuate dozens of children who were at local summer camps as the storms hit.

Vice PM Olga Golodets proposed the evacuation of four children’s summer camps in order to bring the situation under control.

“The children have no contact with the Ministry of Emergencies or the local authorities in Gelendzhik. For two days now they have been without supplies and electricity,” Governor of the Perm Region Viktor Basargin said on Saturday.

“We have decided to take action on the issue of their evacuation,” he continued.

So far, 84 children have returned home. Some 114 more are said to be in an area unaffected by the disaster, so the supervisors of their camp decided the kids could continue their holiday.

There is growing concern over the tourist population in the area. The area is popular with campers and tourists for its proximity to the Black Sea. This year alone 7,130 Russian children went camping in the surrounding territory, Russian Vice-premier Olga Golodetz announced in the wake of the disaster.

However, Governor Tkachyov emphasized that the all the camp grounds in the area appear to be safe:

“Practically all the campgrounds are in normal condition, nothing is threatening the lives of the children.”

The only campground that has suffered as a result of the flooding was the “Azure Shore” campsite, which was without power.

Tkachyov, nevertheless supported Basargin’s decision to evacuate the children.

Today HAZMAT USA State of Alaska, Dutch Harbor Damage level
Details

HAZMAT in USA on Monday, 09 July, 2012 at 04:58 (04:58 AM) UTC.

Description
Two workers were hospitalized and at least 120 people were evacuated from a factory fish- processing ship that leaked up to 5,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia in port at Dutch Harbor Saturday afternoon. The two were flown to Anchorage for medical treatment. The ship, the 367-foot-long M/V Excellence, was relocated to a moorage in Wide Bay, about 7.5 miles from the Kloosterboer North Dock in Dutch Harbor, where it leaked. Workers cannot enter the engineering space where the ammonia is leaking because of the danger, said Steven Russel of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Anhydrous ammonia is used as a coolant in the vessel’s refrigeration system. When compressed, the ammonia is a liquid, but upon release it turns into a gas. The gas displaces the oxygen in the body, causing nausea, shortness of breath, irritation to the eyes and headaches. Ammonia is leaking at a fairly low pressure of less than 4 pounds per square inch. Russell said up to 4,000 pounds of the 22,000 pounds of ammonia aboard the vessel has been released. But Russel did not anticipate much more leakage due to the leak’s location in the refrigeration system. Once the leak was detected, nearby areas were cleared and the workers were evacuated. One of the workers flown to Anchorage has been released from the hospital. The Unalaska fire department has been combating ammonia vapors from the vessel using a high-pressure water fog. DEC plans to monitor the vessel until it’s safe for Hazmat teams to board and gather air data. Select members of the crew with Hazmat training are working alongside the Unalaska Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard. The M/V Excellence was built as a factory trawler in 1973 and refitted in 1990 for use as a factory processor.

The parliamentarians themselves could not restrain from fighting. But, as Aleksey Yaroshevsky reports, it seems to be a usual parliamentarian tactics.

Americans Tax Reform

Comprehensive List of Tax Hikes in Obamacare

Next week, the U.S. House of Representatives will be voting on an historic repeal of the Obamacare law.  While there are many reasons to oppose this flawed government health insurance law, it is important to remember that Obamacare is also one of the largest tax increases in American history.  Below is a comprehensive list of the two dozen new or higher taxes that pay for Obamcare’s expansion of government spending and interference between doctors and patients.

Individual Mandate Excise Tax(Jan 2014): Starting in 2014, anyone not buying “qualifying” health insurance must pay an income surtax according to the higher of the following

1 Adult 2 Adults 3+ Adults
2014 1% AGI/$95 1% AGI/$190 1% AGI/$285
2015 2% AGI/$325 2% AGI/$650 2% AGI/$975
2016 + 2.5% AGI/$695 2.5% AGI/$1390 2.5% AGI/$2085

Exemptions for religious objectors, undocumented immigrants, prisoners, those earning less than the poverty line, members of Indian tribes, and hardship cases (determined by HHS)

Employer Mandate Tax(Jan 2014):  If an employer does not offer health coverage, and at least one employee qualifies for a health tax credit, the employer must pay an additional non-deductible tax of $2000 for all full-time employees.  This provision applies to all employers with 50 or more employees. If any employee actually receives coverage through the exchange, the penalty on the employer for that employee rises to $3000. If the employer requires a waiting period to enroll in coverage of 30-60 days, there is a $400 tax per employee ($600 if the period is 60 days or longer).

Combined score of individual and employer mandate tax penalty: $65 billion/10 years

Surtax on Investment Income ($123 billion/Jan. 2013):  This increase involves the creation of a new, 3.8 percent surtax on investment income earned in households making at least $250,000 ($200,000 single).  This would result in the following top tax rates on investment income

Capital Gains Dividends Other*
2010-2012 15% 15% 35%
2013+ (current law) 23.8% 43.4% 43.4%
2013+ (Obama budget) 23.8% 23.8% 43.4%
*Other unearned income includes (for surtax purposes) gross income from interest, annuities, royalties, net rents, and passive income in partnerships and Subchapter-S corporations.  It does not include municipal bond interest or life insurance proceeds, since those do not add to gross income.  It does not include active trade or business income, fair market value sales of ownership in pass-through entities, or distributions from retirement plans.  The 3.8% surtax does not apply to non-resident aliens.

Excise Tax on Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans($32 bil/Jan 2018): Starting in 2018, new 40 percent excise tax on “Cadillac” health insurance plans ($10,200 single/$27,500 family). For early retirees and high-risk professions exists a higher threshold ($11,500 single/$29,450 family).  CPI +1 percentage point indexed.

Hike in Medicare Payroll Tax($86.8 bil/Jan 2013): Current law and changes:

First $200,000
($250,000 Married)
Employer/Employee
All Remaining Wages
Employer/Employee
Current Law 1.45%/1.45%
2.9% self-employed
1.45%/1.45%
2.9% self-employed
Obamacare Tax Hike 1.45%/1.45%
2.9% self-employed
1.45%/2.35%
3.8% self-employed

Medicine Cabinet Tax($5 bil/Jan 2011): Americans no longer able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin)

HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike($1.4 bil/Jan 2011): Increases additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.

Flexible Spending Account Cap – aka“Special Needs Kids Tax”($13 bil/Jan 2013): Imposes cap of $2500 (Indexed to inflation after 2013) on FSAs (now unlimited). . There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children.  There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education.  Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education.

Tax on Medical Device Manufacturers($20 bil/Jan 2013): Medical device manufacturers employ 360,000 people in 6000 plants across the country. This law imposes a new 2.3% excise tax.  Exemptions include items retailing for less than $100.

Raise “Haircut” for Medical Itemized Deduction from 7.5% to 10% of AGI($15.2 bil/Jan 2013): Currently, those facing high medical expenses are allowed a deduction for medical expenses to the extent that those expenses exceed 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI).  The new provision imposes a threshold of 10 percent of AGI; it is waived for 65+ taxpayers in 2013-2016 only.

Tax on Indoor Tanning Services($2.7 billion/July 1, 2010): New 10 percent excise tax on Americans using indoor tanning salons

Elimination of tax deduction for employer-provided retirement Rx drug coverage in coordination with Medicare Part D($4.5 bil/Jan 2013)

Blue Cross/Blue Shield Tax Hike($0.4 bil/Jan 2010): The special tax deduction in current law for Blue Cross/Blue Shield companies would only be allowed if 85 percent or more of premium revenues are spent on clinical services

Excise Tax on Charitable Hospitals(Min$/immediate): $50,000 per hospital if they fail to meet new “community health assessment needs,” “financial assistance,” and “billing and collection” rules set by HHS

Tax on Innovator Drug Companies($22.2 bil/Jan 2010): $2.3 billion annual tax on the industry imposed relative to share of sales made that year.

Tax on Health Insurers($60.1 bil/Jan 2014): Annual tax on the industry imposed relative to health insurance premiums collected that year. The stipulation phases in gradually until 2018, and is fully-imposed on firms with $50 million in profits.

$500,000 Annual Executive Compensation Limit for Health Insurance Executives($0.6 bil/Jan 2013)

Employer Reporting of Insurance on W-2(Min$/Jan 2011): Preamble to taxing health benefits on individual tax returns.

Corporate 1099-MISC Information Reporting($17.1 bil/Jan 2012): Requires businesses to send 1099-MISC information tax forms to corporations (currently limited to individuals), a huge compliance burden for small employers

“Black liquor” tax hike(Tax hike of $23.6 billion).  This is a tax increase on a type of bio-fuel.

Codification of the “economic substance doctrine”(Tax hike of $4.5 billion).  This provision allows the IRS to disallow completely-legal tax deductions and other legal tax-minimizing plans just because the IRS deems that the action lacks “substance” and is merely intended to reduce taxes owed.

Will The British Bankers’ Association Ban Barclays As It Said It Would?

Source: ZeroHedge

In the ongoing reincarnation of Lie-borgate (because as Jon Weil reminds everyone, this is nothing new under the sun, except for a few e-mails, and a bottle of Bollinger), there is just one missing link right about now. From Bloomberg, April 16, 2008:

“It’s very important to us that we preserve the integrity of the figures,” said Lesley McLeod, a BBA spokeswoman in London. “It’s something we have been looking at. If we find that people have been putting in figures which don’t reflect accurately their financial figures, the ultimate sanction is to throw them out of the pond.”
And just so there is no confusion, from the NYT, June 6, 2008

The British Bankers Association (BBA) — which oversees the daily benchmark setting process — in April announced that it was bringing forward its annual review of the process. It stated that any member found to be deliberately misquoting would be banned.
So: Will the British Bankers’ Association now ban Barclays as it said it would? After all, there is all that “integrity” to be preserved.

Israel, Iran already at war?

Nations trading blows under the table, say analysts

by Michael Carl

WND

Though it might seem far from Jerusalem, a border battle in Africa, some analysts warn, is the site of a proxy war being waged between Israel and Iran.

Middle East analyst Joseph Puder explains the boundary area between Sudan and the recently formed South Sudan has become a battleground for Jerusalem and Tehran to quietly exchange blows.

“Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, eager to win over the Sunni-Arab world, has been more than happy to comply and provide Khartoum with arms, ideology and strengthened economic ties, including oil exploration,” Puder writes.

“For Tehran, Bashir’s Sudan is a major Shiite Islam success story,” Puder writes. “Sudan is both an Arab and Sunni-Muslim [nation] previously allied with the West (under President Jafaar Numeiri). Omar Bashir transformed Sudan into an Islamic theocracy allied with Iran and turned it into a base of operations for Tehran in Africa and the Middle East (supplying arms to Hamas in Gaza through Sudan).”

Meanwhile, a former CIA station chief who asked not to be named says Israel is also invested in the region, creating a possible scenario in Sudan that pits Islam versus the West.

“The Muslim countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Iran are indeed providing financial and military support to Bashir’s regime,” the CIA station chief said. “[And while] the West is essentially doing ‘lip service’ to the newly independent South Sudan, the only nation that is putting action behind its words is Israel.”

The Times of Israel reported earlier this year that South Sudan looks to Israel as a “role model.”

“South Sudan’s fondness for Israel extends to the diplomatic arena,” the Times of Israel report stated, “where the two countries have been building strategic ties in a relationship that long preceded the founding of South Sudan last July.”

“They see in us kind of a role model in how a small nation surrounded by enemies can survive and prosper, and they would like to imitate that,” said incoming Israeli Ambassador to South Sudan Haim Koren, according to the Times.

American Enterprise Institute Middle East analyst Michael Rubin pointed out that Ahmadinehad has a vested interest in pestering Israel wherever possible.

“His interest is to muck things up where he can,” Rubin said. “He does similarly in Senegal and in St. Vincent.”

Israel increases violence across Gaza

Six Palestinians were killed in series of Israeli strikes on Gaza, all carried out just hours after a deadly ambush along Israel’s southern border with Egypt. The latest strike which killed two 17-year-old youths took place shortly after midnight near Deir al-Balah, but their bodies were only recovered after dawn when an ambulance could get to the scene. The Israeli military also fired on civilians near to Khan Younis, in the South of the Gaza Strip.

Cairo has brokered Gaza truces in the past and an Egyptian official said renewed mediation had secured agreement by Israel and Palestinian factions on Tuesday night. While the Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt urged all parties to exercise restraint and prevent civilian casualties and loss of life. Alistair Burt said: “I am deeply concerned about this week’s escalation of violence in Gaza and southern Israel. I condemn this indiscriminate rocket fire into southern Israel, as I do all acts of terrorism. The UK urges all parties to exercise restraint and prevent civilian casualties and loss of life.”

These Companies Got Rich Selling Illegal Weapons To US Adversaries

In the wake of the Pratt & Whitney settlement (the defense giant illegally sold a bunch of helicopter enginesto the Chinese) we wondered who else had been busted for outlaw arms dealing that we hadn’t heard about. We went through the State Department’s list — which is long, diverse, and contains the names of both blue-chip companies and sketchy front corporations — to find some of the biggest illegal arms.

To keep it manageable we posted only the biggest within the last six years.

Turns out selling weapons and classified equipment to other countries without a permit is very illegal, but extremely lucrative. Hundreds of individuals are banned from doing business with the State Department for risking the practice and getting caught, but there seems little shortage of others to pick up the slack once they’re gone.

A lot like another illegal business, it’s almost impossible to prevent.
