Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB said late Wednesday that it has found suspected explosives in a truck that was trying to enter its Ringhals nuclear power facility in south west Sweden. In a statement, the company said staff found the suspect material when carrying out normal security checks, with a sniffer dog confirming the vehicle was carrying explosives. Police are present at the scene and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority have raised the level of protection at the site as a precaution, though the company stressed that the discovered object could not have caused any serious harm. Swedish police bomb technicians also said there is no risk of an explosion as there was no ignition device present. “The assessment is that the situation is under control,” said police spokesman Lars Grimbeck. Other nuclear stations in the country have raised their security level. No injuries have been reported and police patrols have been stepped up at the site. Ringhals nuclear power plant is the largest power plant in Scandinavia and its four reactors produce about 20% of all electricity in Sweden. |
